ART BEARS: REVISITED Code:6908 Price:
$25.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| As the years passed and technology marched on, Art Bears decided to let other artists to remix the three original albums. On the 3 disks referred to as "REVISITED" in this box, we are treated to how others perceive the importance of the Art Bears' back catalog by their own standards in the current studio world, using the resurrected master tapes as a starting point. In all cases the work is as radical today as it was when the band first offered it up a quarter of a century ago. Features Bob Drake, Stephan Tickmayer, Jon Rose, Christian Marclay Thomas Dimuzio, Musci-Venosta, Lars Pedersen (When), Warrick Swinney (The Kalahari Surfers), Biota, The Residents, Otomo Yoshida, and, well....too many more to mention here. You get the idea. It harkens the Art Bears trilogy into a new era of technology, aesthetic and sound, all of which had yet to be introduced back when the original albums were made. Also on these disks are previously unreleased concert recordings, a reissue of the "Collapse" 45 rpm (from Ralph Records), a newly completed piece by the band aptly called," Rebirth" (which was hitherto a poem in the coveted "Wintersongs" book), "All Hail" from the Recommended Sampler, and the extremely rare live version of "Coda to Man and Boy" from the Cantu recording.

Agitation Free: Malesch Code:6724 Price:
$18.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| Agitation Free was founded 1969 in Berlin and were known for a complex instrumental progressive rock with spacey sounds, a mixture of Popol Vuh and the early Pink Floyd. Yet, the style of Agitation Free was real and one filled with cosmic and ethnic elements and first of all due to the genius inventions and the great talent of its musicians, one played with a lot of electronic, keyboards, two guitars, drums but less vocals. The first LP of Agitation Free was released in 1972 on Vertigo and is back now as an official reissue on CD.

Ahvak: Ahvak Code:5879 Price:
$13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| "The Israeli band Ahvak, named after the Hebrew word for "Dust," creates music of dark, ominous and compelling beauty. Ahvak's mesmerizing and electrified version of chamber rock blurs the boundary lines between styles and aligns the band with forward-thinking bands such as Univers Zero, The Science Group, Sotos, Thinking Plague and the 5UUs. Led by two conservatory trained composers/keyboardists and also featuring excellent work on guitar, bass and drums (by Dave Kerman!), the five musicians are joined by their engineer, Udi Koomran, who often extends the music into unique directions by his use of modern computer software, without compromising the integrity of the compositions or the vibrant performances. The resulting CD is a highly sophisticated and expertly produced work, featuring superb compositions performed by highly experienced musicians". -Cuneiform

Barrett, Syd: Barrett Code:6555 Price:
$18.00
Quantity in Basket: none
| "UK version (with bonus tracks not found on the domestic US version), of the 2nd Syd Barrett solo album. Originally released in November 1970 on Harvest. Barrett was the second and final studio album of new material released by former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett. 'Shortly after releasing his first album, The Madcap Laughs, Barrett appeared on John Peel's Top Gear radio show where he presented only one song from the newly released album. Two days later, he began working on his second album in the Abbey Road Studios, this time with Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Rick Wright as producers and musicians. The main aim for the Barrett sessions was to give Syd the structure and focus many felt was missing during the long and unwieldy sessions for The Madcap Laughs. Thus, the sessions were more efficiently run -- with much unreleased material recorded -- and the album was finished in far less time than it took to complete The Madcap Laughs. In addition, with the unpredictability and at times despairing nature of Madcap greatly decreased, the rigid format of the new sessions ended up giving Barrett a less inventive flavor, as a result. Nonetheless, Barrett does indeed have some memorable songs, least of all 'Baby Lemonade,' 'Dominoes' and 'Gigolo Aunt,' all of which are as well known to Barrett fans as 'See Emily Play' and 'Astronomy Domine.' Although not generally as highly regarded as The Madcap Laughs, Barrett -- of which, the cover was painted by Syd himself -- is still a much-prized recording from its maker. Includes seven bonus tracks including: 'Baby Lemonade (Take 1),' 'Waving My Arms In The Air (Take 1),' 'I Never Lied To You (Take 1),' 'Love Song (Take 1),' 'Dominoes (Take 1),' 'Dominoes (Take 2),' 'It Is Obvious (Take 2).'" -Forced Exposure

Barrett, Syd: The Madcap Laughs Code:6556 Price:
$18.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| "UK version (with bonus tracks not found on the domestic US version), of the first Syd Barrett solo album. Originally released on Harvest in January 1970. 'During February 1968, Dave Gilmour had been drafted into The Pink Floyd and for a brief time they existed as a 5-piece. Soon, however, rumours circulated that Syd Barrett would be taking on a 'Brian Wilson' role, writing and recording material 'behind the scenes.' But by April it was clear that he had been ousted completely. Within a month of his axing, Barrett was back in Abbey Road. With his manager Pete Jenner as producer, Barrett began his solo career. Blending angular, riveting guitar-work and jaunty improvisation with more fragile and enchanting pieces, Barrett composed in a suitably elegiac fashion. Later in the recording process, Gilmour and Roger Waters would aid in co-production, shepherding Barrett through many takes and re-takes of what finally gelled as his most skilled and coherent solo record. Includes six bonus tracks including 'Octopus (Takes 1&2)', 'It's No Good Trying (Take 5)', 'Love You (Take 1)', 'Love You (Take 3)', 'She Took A Long Cold Look At Me (Take 4)', Golden Hair (Take 5)'." -Forced Exposure

Camberwell Now: All's Well Code:6911 Price:
$15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| This definitive edition collects the entire released output of Camberwell Now (two EPs and an LP), newly re-mastered by the band and repackaged with full notes, lyrics, additional photographs and artwork. Chronologically, Camberwell Now immediately succeeded This Heat, Charles Hayward continuing to work with This Heat's last bassist Trefor Goronwy, and the two of them joining forces with Stephen Rickard who, for the new band, designed his unique 'cassette switchboard', a kind of proto-sampler - though that's not the half of it (Steve's article fully explaining the device is reprinted in the new, expanded booklet that comes with the CD).
Musically, Camberwell both followed and departed from the style of This Heat. Formally and gesturally there are common elements, but there is far greater transparency and the sound palette is quite different: the music is more placed than grown, as the slow accumulation and evolution of material in This Heat gives way to a more immediate and orderly development of the material in Camberwell Now. The songs - nostalgic, scary, and quietly desperate - peer into the future to find harbour but confront only fragments of ruin.

Dave Kerman/5uu's: Abandonship Code:5906 Price:
$13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| "Dave Kerman is in the forefront of contemporary 'Rock In Opposition' (R.I.O.)-inspired progressive rock, his name appearing in multiple contexts as an internationally reknown drummer and as a composer. He is one of the most in demand drummers on the avant progressive scene, playing in the 5uu's, U Totem, Thinking Plague, Present and Blast. Kerman founded his own band, the 5uu's, in 1984. Inspired by the European "Rock In Opposition" (RIO) movement's uncompromising stance, and devoted to a concept of song-oriented music with emphasis on short pieces, and lyrics and melodies, the 5uu's created a sound that was a distinctly American version of R.I.O.-inspired rock. Abandonship is the 5uu's sixth release. It features compositions, lyrics (printed in the CD booklet), and multi-instrumentation by Kerman, vocals by Deborah Perry (Thinking Plague) & sound sculpting by Udi Koomran. It is an emotionally intense, densely-layered, and compositionally complex work, inspired by such dark R.I.O. bands as Univers Zero and Present, and a logical progression of the 5uu's multi-faceted, prismatic sound. 'The results are mesmerizing...Kerman is still the unsung shaman of unbridled convolution..perched on a precipice high enough to make most indie rockers appear ant-sized.' -Alternative Press. '...a frighteningly coherent statement that with time should eventually stand as one of Rock In Opposition's finest momements' -Expose". -Cuneiform

Die Trip Computer Die: Die Like A Rock Code:6594 Price:
$19.00

| "The third album from Die Trip Computer Die sets out to bury the corpse of rock for all time but instead runs smack bang into a delicious wall of pithecanthropoid pop. Samplerdelia trio Die Trip present a third collection of skewed songs and numinous instrumentals. The trio of Lepke B, Xentos Fray Bentos and Ted Barrow have played in numerous combinations over the last 25 years (notably The Homosexuals and Milk From Cheltenham) and this album sees them palpably hit their stride. The critical response to the group has been positive: 'Convincing, sometimes astonishing pieces, songs, mini-dramas. One of the best ensembles using this technology I've heard; very focused and highly musical,' says Chris Cutler."-Forced Exposure

Drake, Bob: What Day Is It ? Code:5338 Price:
$15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| What Day Is It ? is the re-issue of Bob's very first solo disc (originally self-manufactured in art packaging – here tho, professionally packaged for mass market sales). It already exhibits Bob's characteristic traits: golden fingers, hi-wire vocals, eyebrow-raising country-picking, loose-but-right-in-the-pocket drums, eccentric chord inversions, and a bass-guitar sound to die for. Sitting happily with the fantasy 'Yes' Euro-progressive surface is the rather more substantial depth of a bluegrass and rooted-rock American culture; an almost unique combination and one hard to imitate (or even imagine, until you hear Bob do it). But then, Bob has always marched to the beat of a different drummer, manifestly careless of the fashion or of the easier, more superficial aspects of the music he has absorbed.

Frith, Fred: Impur II Code:7708 Price:
$15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| Impur II is totally different from Impur I - which was a deconstructed, spatialised simultaneity of musical events that could only be heard through open windows or by wandering through rooms - Impur 2 took the form of an unannounced performance across which audience members had to stumble by chance (and then collect their friends - or not). Both events formed part of a commission by L'Ecole Nationale de Musique de Villurbanne in May 1996.This recording, painstakingly edited and re-mastered by Fred, appears as a full-on concert by a large 19 strong ensemble with Fred conducting as well as playing. It's built on rhythm, harmony, rock noise, exotic instrumentation, power, complexity and melodic writing - with intermittent stretches of chaos, eccentricity and theatre, and fits comfortably into the aesthetic of his earlier performing ensemble projects, like Gravity, Skeleton Crew and Keep the Dog.

Two of them feature - and were especially written for - the remarkable violinist Carla Kihlstedt. Fred and Carla perform one of them (Fred playing a huge array of instruments here as on all pieces), are joined by Fred Guiliano, (samples) and Gail Brand (trombone) on another, while the third features Fred, Hande Erdem (violin) and Threresa Wong (cello). These are complex studio compositions characterised by a deceptive simplicity, layers and plateaux, rhythm and colour.

$160.00
Quantity in Basket: none
| The 5 full-length discs in Box 1 cover Henry Cow's career from the pre-Virgin Records days up to roughly 1975. These are all previously unreleased recordings, some live, some demo, some studio, all sonically enhanced by Bob Drake's painstaking re-mastering. We are treated to everything from early BBC sessions to somewhat later live improvisations, alternate recordings with Robert Wyatt, to the full 18 minute version of "With the Yellow Moon And Half Star" (The Bacchae). There are many compositions and improvisations new to anyone who only knows the official releases; The disks also document a number of one-off projects and events and - where different or remarkable enough to justify inclusion - live versions of parts of the LP repertoire. The hefty, 60-page booklet is chock-full of historic information and exclusive photos. The 4 full-length CD's + 1 DVD in Box 2 cover the Cow's career from roughly 1976 to the band's demise, with an emphasis on the later era. Nobody knew that this 75-minute concert broadcast of the band existed, so the DVD is a real boon, and has spectacular versions of "Beautiful As The Moon", "Living In The Heart Of The Beast", "March", "Erk Gah", "No More Songs" and a great, improvisational piece. The music discs are also excellent, and include as highlights the original version of "Joan", as well as a 12 minute, hitherto unreleased piece by Lindsay Cooper, and great versions of "Erk Gah and "Viva Pa Ubu". There's also some immaculate improvising, including a 17 minute foray from the original RIO Festival, and Fred's "Awake Against Sleep" from the Western Culture sessions - and all that's just the tip of the iceberg. The hefty, 60-page booklet is chock-full of historic information and exclusive photos. And everything has been carefully transferred and re-mastered by Bob Drake to the best audio quality that current technology allows without interference or tampering.

There's also some immaculate improvising, including a 17 minute foray from the original RIO Festival, and Fred's "Waking Against Sleep" from the Western Culture sessions - and all that's just the tip of the iceberg. The hefty, 60-page booklet is chock-full of historic information and exclusive photos. And everything has been carefully transferred and re-mastered by Bob Drake to the best audio quality that current technology allows without interference or tampering.

IZ: EM Code:6334 Price:
$9.00
Quantity in Basket: none
| "E M" is the 3rd CD from IZ, and is a densely layered and skillfully presented instrumental CD on the heavy side of rock, with elements of experimental music. Generally the songs writing is in a minimalist and sparse style that is in contrast to the thick tambor, meter changes and harmonic complexities. This approach makes every note/chord an essential statement and creates a unique sonic quality rarely heard in groups with rock instrumentation. Michael Lance Serviolo does the majority of the composing and plays guitar, Tom Sublet plays bass & synthesizer, David Kerman plays drums. This line-up offers diversity and musical quality to "E M". Michael has played with such groups as The Perry Weissman 3, Jux County and Elan. David is known for his work with Thinking Plague, The 5UU's, U-totem and Present. Tom has worked with Uversa, Sandscrit and The Good Vibes Quartet. The blending of rhythmic precision, interesting compositions and tonal coloring make this a great recording.

| The two mainstays of the band were Jean-Vincent Huguenin (aka Jean-20 Huguenin) and Cedric Vuille. This is the debut disc by L'Ensemble Rayé, first released on vinyl in 1990, with each side of the disc devoted to compositions and arrangements by one of the pair (the "Même en Hiver" side featured Vuille and the "Comme un Pinson Dans L'Eau" side featured Huguenin). The album provided the two musicians the opportunity to display their skills on a wide array of instruments, with Huguenin revealing particular talents on guitar and Vuille on both guitar and clarinet; multi-tracking and a host of guest musicians gave L'Ensemble Rayé the sound of a full band on most of the tracks.

| This is a group of jolly Swissmen who decided to synthesize the most fascinating tendencies of most unexpected music. These partners surely don't live on the same shore as, say, Jean-Luc Godard. Their art evokes instead that of Jacques Demy without words, or some talkative Jacques Tati or even some poetic Federico Fellini Humour, mischief and know-how blend there together in a caustic mixture. Amongst the numerous releases of the band, one could notice the excellent Même En Hiver" (1989), reissued by the Gazul label. | One of the very first (maybe *the* first) CD release on the late, great AYAA label was by this mostly instrumental Swiss trio of tenor sax, bass and drums. 20 years later, here they are again, now with a guitarist and a couple of guests on a few songs, with a fine third album and somewhat of a different sound than before. While the influences/energy/etc of the old 'downtown NYC' sound is still there, there's also some more 'modern sounding' influences here and there and it isn't as obviously in the Curlew/Decoding Society axis as before, with some great moody bits. --Wayside Music

Marcoeur, Albert: L'Apostrophe Code:6655 Price:

| L'apostraphe is an extraordinary new CD from Albert and his brothers - and many guest musicians. As always these are meticulously crafted songs, eccentric, brilliantly arranged and now opened out into a whole new world of sounds and treatments as they struggle through old cinema soundtracks, aural fog, nostalgia, distortion, interference or a dizzy, dreamlike aural Sargasso sea of trailing weeds. Diffuse, yet with every detail pin sharp. Remarkable. I had to listen three times to find it and that's always a good sign.

Matching Mole: March Code:5966 Price:

Quantity in Basket: none
| "Formed by drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt after he left the pioneering UK jazz/rock Soft Machine in 1971. By early 1972, the band conisted of Robert, guitarist Phil Miller, bassist Bill MacCormick & electric pianist Dave MacRae. The band was exceedingly active for a band that lasted less than one year, recording two albums and playing dozens of shows throughout Europe. In 2001, Cuneiform released Smoke Signals, a collection of unreleased performances. The band was so pleased with that album that when one of the members came across a forgotten live show on tape - identified simply as 'March, 1972', they immediately contacted us, and this album is the result. Recorded live in Europe 3/72, shortly after Dave MacRae became the keyboardist, this includes the basic repertoire that the band would perform during their lifetime, with a few surprises thrown in. The sound is surprisingly superb for a live show of this vintage, and once again Tom Recchion has come up with a charming cover. 'Great sound, great artwork - so thanks once again.' -Robert Wyatt" -Cuneiform

| "Formed by drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt after he left the pioneering UK outfit Soft Machine in 1971. By early 1972, the band conisted of Robert, guitarist Phil Miller, bassist Bill MacCormick & electric pianist Dave McRae. Smoke Signals compiles all previously unreleased performances - selected & sequenced by Robert Wyatt biographer Mike King - from the band's most intense gigging period. The set list is mostly drawn from Little Red Record, but the way the band performed the pieces live is quite different from the heavily overdubbed versions found on the studio disc. Despite their very short lifetime, Mole developed an individual sound based on the players idiosyncratic musical styles, that was a unique take on fusion and Canterbury musics. Features an amazing cover and liner notes by Aymeric Leroy". -Cuneiform

Muffins: Bandwidth Code:5976 Price:

| "Since their demise in 1981, The Muffins have been generally acknowledged as one of the finest (and one of the most unsung) U.S. proponents of progressive/new music. During their lifetime, The Muffins were never less than amazing, and with the reissues on CD of their back catalog, their reputation only grew. In a very happy occurance, all four members of the band reformed in 1998 and began developing a new repertoire and performing concerts. In a world glutted with half-baked reformations by bands looking to cash in on past glories, Bandwidth is the genuine article; a reformation of all the original members who who have gotten together not for money, but because they miss what they had done together in the past and who feel that they still have something to say. Bandwidth is very recognizably the work of The Muffins; you can hear elements of both Manna/Mirage and <185> here, as well as lots of new elements". -Cuneiform

| "It is an all-too-rare occurrence for a band, throughout its career, to create music that continually pushes the envelope and transforms the landscape. It is an even rarer occurrence for such a band to reunite after a long separation, and embark on a second musical career that proves as innovative as the first. For The Muffins, lightning has struck twice. In 1998, The Muffins reformed with all four members, and it proved to be the genuine article. Double Negative is The Muffins' 2nd studio recording released since reforming and possibly the most ambitious work of their career. Featuring 75 minutes of music spread over 17 songs, Double Negative is The Muffins' most compositionally diverse work, featuring pieces that vary in style and tone greatly, but which are always theirs (although they might fool you for a bit here and there!). The Muffins have long been noted for the way they craft memorable themes with adventurous musical structures and this is no exception. In addition, it is the band's most instrumentally rich work, featuring an unprecedented number of musical guest appearances. Two principal members of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott, play sax on several tracks, while longtime Muffins contributor, Doug Elliott, contributes excellent trombone parts to half the pieces and string players also contribute". -Cuneiform

N.I.M.B.Y.: Songs For Adults Code:5336 Price:

| James Grigsby – Bob Drake – Jerry Wheeler – Dave Kerman "Not In My Backyard" (NIMBY)is James Grigsby (of the legendary Motor Totemist Guild) and left-field luminaries from Thinking Plague, Hail, The 5UUs and Giant Ant Farm. The official story is that an electrical storm temporarily deranged their faculties while leaving their musical abilities unaffected, leading to this unaccountable recording, made more or less live in a barn in Southern France, with only a handful of overdubs (mostly vocals & some soloing) added by engineer and bassist Bob Drake at the mixing and mastering stage. Instead of making the cutting edge contemporary post rock record they planned, they wound up musically reverting to their youth while mentally indulging in the whiny frustrations of middle age. Could it be worse? Yes. This is not just an album of songs, it's a concept album and it documents what happens when a bunch of spoiled baby-boomers - mostly from Southern California - get old & grumpy.

Pere Ubu: London * Texas Code:7710 Price:
$15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| A missing piece of the Ubu jigsaw, and a fine memento of a great band, London Texas is a satisfyingly hi-fi live recording of the sadly short-lived line-up that toured briefly between the arrival of Eric Drew Feldman and the departure of Chris Cutler. Certainly it's the best recording of the Scott, Cutler, Maimone rhythm section - though the whole band is on lean-back-intense concert form. Coming back to it, this was the end of a particular era, of a certain kind of band: the songs are economical and tightly arranged but harmonically elaborated - with strongly performative and musical underpinning (there's a new aesthetic in place now); it's an approach that takes no prisoners. Then there's the bonus of that scary live energy. Studio recordings just can't do this. London Texas stings like a bee - in a beret.

Pharoah Overlord: Number 2 Code:6722 Price:
$13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| Formed in Finland by guitarist Jussi Lehtisalo, the songwriting force behind cult Finnish band Circle, Pharaoh Overlord came together with the intention of creating vastly minimal, psychedelic music. Some may call it 'Stoner Rock' -- but we're not gonna go there, although it is true that anyone with an altered state of mind could easily get lost in the repetition found on Pharaoh Overlords' second record. Influenced by the groove and fuzz of 70's hard rock, the Overlords strip it down to the bare essentials of minimalism. Jamscapes built around heavy rhythms that are just waiting to explode, but they rarely do, and that's the beauty of it. The six tracks on this album stretch across time and space where the quietest rumble of a guitar can feel like the end of the world. II may certainly put you in a relaxed state, but don't get too comfortable, man. Trouble is right around the corner.

Pox: Borgnine Code:7772 Price:
$12.99
Quantity in Basket: none
| POX (not to be confused with the French pop group that bears the same name) is the long-standing project by CHRIS BLOCK, ex of Cheer Accident. A few years in the making, this recording goes well beyond the group's previous offerings, and will enthrall fans of C.A., Star Period Star, Flying Luttenbachers, Hail, Fortrangt Hushallsarbete, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, This Heat, Combat Astronomy etc. There's a lot of juicy, hard-hitting tunes here, and a great amount of variety in their approaches. A few guest musicians too, including four different drummers: Thymme Jones, Brad Schlueter, Jim Widlowski and Dave Kerman. This is a disk that takes pleasure in breaking many rules of "Rock" music, while somehow managing to be ultimately fun and listenable. Certain elements of instrumental harmony are just so "wrong", but that was the point; and hence they become idiomatic certainties by means of purposefully re-writing the musical language explored. Though self-produced, it doesn't sound DIY or cheap, and with these old hands at the helm....well, experience is speaking loudly here. Give it a shot, wontcha ? Think Ernest Borgnine; no Star Trek references, please.

Rattlemouth: Home Fed and Full Grown: Music for Film and Dance Code:7771 Price:
$12.99
Quantity in Basket: none
| The return of another long-standing American mainstay, RATTLEMOUTH's newest is gorgeous, and surely their most mature work to date. Though subtitled, "Music For Film And Dance", this truly transcends what is commonly referred to as a soundtrack. It's great to hear complimenting sax work (Roger Carrol and Danny Finney) laying down the melodic framework instead of the aimless skronking matches intrinsic to many other East Coast bands; and the rhythm section of drums, bass and guitar are so TIGHT they'd make a minnow's closed eye jealous. You can still hear the band's influences, especially Fred Frith, their old Orthotonics days and the first ZNR, maybe. But this far on in the game, Rattlemouth have become a school unto themselves, and their MO allows the music to grow and unfold. Robbie Kinter's drumming is impeccable here: So much in the pocket, assured and elegant, without a single intent to bludgeon the listener (and he's branched out into other instruments as well, blessya, man). Some of this record is so beautiful that you'd hardly guess it was Rattlemouth, the "bad ambassadors" of Richmond, VA. But they're not afraid to live it up either, as witnessed by the inclusion of what must be the shortest tango ever (move over, Jack Bruce's The Consul At Sunset). The hauntingly eerie "Between Frames" is my favorite piece of music this month; Think Etron Fou, but with many years of experience on, playing the deck of a cruise ship, skeet shooting perfect notes, through the clouds, out of the starry skies.

Soft Machine: Backwards Code:6033 Price:
$13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| "The fourth in our Soft Machine archival series. Backwards is comprised of recordings from three different and interesting eras of the band: First on the CD is a recording of the quartet from May, 1970, made just about the time that the band had finished recording their Third album. The recording is mono, but the sonic quality is superb; this may be the single finest recording of the quartet version of the band, surpasing even their official studio relases. Next is two performances from November, 1969, featuring the septet version of Soft Machine. Since the only other available material by this version of the band is 20' of BBC recordings, this is an invaluable addition to the band's recorded legacy. Lastly there is Robert Wyatt's original demo of 'Moon In June', which would eventually appear on Third. The first half of this demo version was recorded in the USA in the fall of 1968, after Soft Machine had disbanded after their 2nd US tour, but before the band reformed for their 2nd album. Then, in 1969, the trio version of Soft Machine recorded the ending to their piece, and spliced on the final half". -Cuneiform

Soft Machine: Live In Paris Code:6034 Price:
$18.99

| "The Soft Machine line-up of Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper, John Marshall and Mike Ratledge lasted under half a year and recorded just one half of an album (side two of '5'). Live in Paris is a rare recording of this quartet during that lineup's final days; Dean left Soft Machine later that month. It is also a special, rare example of a Soft Machine concert recorded and released in its entirety. Live in Paris shows Soft Machine playing in top form. The tracklisting consists of works from 'Third' and '5' in often significantly different versions, as well as several piece not recorded elsewhere. This excellent quality release - formerly released as 'Live In France' on another label - is taken from the less than 2 dozen shows performed by this version of the band, and shows that despite such a short life, that this version of the quartet definitely had their own style and sound". -Cuneiform

These heavily manipulated/looped/etc. recordings were originally presented as the backdrop to a multi-media work entitled Spaced. After it's week-long performance, the tapes were forgotten for over 25 years until rediscovered by Mike King. These recordings feature the band at their most radical, & while they would never again use the studio in such an extreme fashion, the work done here definitely influenced later works such as Third & Hugh's 1984. With liner notes by Hugh & Bob Woolford. | One of the outstanding bands of the eighties who came and went with hardly anyone noticing and just 2 EP's and a single released on their own label. In 1982, ReR compiled an LP from the debris of the surviving tapes and that was that for 20 years. Now more or less everything that can be found has been collected together on these 3 CDs. The first two assemble the handful of releases issued by the band plus our own 1982 best-of LP, the 'Ici La Bas' album (the HS under other names), 'Venceremos' - a cassette release with some tracks by the group and various individual members, and various fragments - preliminary backing tracks and so on. The third CD features the work of the later group, mainly Bruno and Suzy. There is a 30pp booklet with some useful recovered photos, Bruno's version of the band history and notes on the tracks. Those of you for whom this is a must know who you are. You will need this release. Those who want to test the water first, I suggest you start with our single CD reissue of the ReR 1982 release.

Thinking Plague: A History Of Madness Code:6040 Price:
$13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| "Thinking Plague's greatly anticipated 5th album presents a further maturation of the band's sound. Not content to merely repeat their past successes, the album's overall feel is due in part to the inclusion of acoustic instruments in the mix, which is also interwoven with electronic sounds and samples. The CD includes two soundscape pieces, 'War on Terra' and 'Le Gouffre', that leader Mike Johnson maintains: 'are really a departure for me, or a beginning, as it were, in that they are my first really serious forays into the realm of semi-composed, sonic environments rather than organized pieces or songs.' The line up is Mike Johnson (guitars), Deborah Perry (vocals), Dave Willey (bass and accordions), Dave Shamrock (formerly of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) (drums), Mark Harris (reeds) and Matt Mitchell (piano, harmonium, synths) with contributions from other musicians, including Dave Kerman (percussion), Ron Miles (trumpet), Mark McCoin (samples and soundscapes) and others. The CD's magic reveals itself on multiple listenings, in exploring the work's threads like currents in a stream. However, a single listen will suffice to leave most spellbound". -Cuneiform

This is their latest & includes co-founders guitarist Mike Johnson, multi-instrumentalist Bob Drake, monster drummer Dave Kerman as well as a host of others, all of whom turn in tremendous performances on vocals, guitars, multiple reeds, accordion, keyboards, bass, drums and more. Tuneful, well composed & strongly structured, this is very much in the vanguard of the RIO art-rock song style, along with peers such as U Totem, the 5uu's & the Art Bears. 'Among the vanguard of groups riding the crest of a largely unheralded contemporary avant-progressive tsunami, Denver's Thinking Plague stand out in bas-relief...the manner in which Thinking Plague...have condensed only the most fertile (& often most pulverising) aspects of the last 30 years of progressive exploration is nothing short of awe-inspiring.' 5/5 stars - Alternative Press". -Cuneiform

$13.95

| "U Totem is the combination of the 5uus & the Motor Totemist Guild. This pairing has brought out the best parts of both bands, combining the abstraction & lyricism of the 5uus with the classical control & tambre of the MTG. Keyboards, bassoon, guitar, bass, flute, drums & voice combine to produce major stunners. 'U Totem is characterized by unsurpassed technique and perfect sound; in addition, this music is well written & well orchestrated...this must surely be the CD of the year!' -Gateavisa. 'The closest thing to Henry Cow in complexity...world class playing & singing...there is nothing else like this now.' -Chris Cutler". -Cuneiform

VRIL: The Fatal Duckpond Code:7700 Price:
$15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| After a break of six years, Chris Cutler, Bob Drake and Lukas Simonis, now with added ingredient Pierre Omer, present the second volume of recordings by the elusive VRIL - a band who revive and update both the great institution of the guitar instrumental and the now sadly neglected practice of collective arrangement, intense rehearsal and live studio performance. Appropriate to the half century that has passed since the birth of the form, these hits dodge about, get bored easily and blend both concentration and complexity with the still indispensable traditional qualities that made the genre great: hummability, crafted sounds, nifty arrangements, ridiculous gimmicks and ensemble playing. 'Neither tribute nor parody, these enigmatic pieces are never more nor less than exactly what they are'.... wrote Lothar Preen in his Melbourne concert review....'but perfectly realised'. With film stills, misleading sleeve-notes and storyboard by the Diogenesian recluse Frank Key.

Van Wissem, Jozef: Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear Code:6869 Price:
$16.95
Quantity in Basket: none
| First solo release by Van Wissem on Bvhaast, 2005 release. Performed by Jozef van Wissem (lute, airfield recordings, electronics), Arnold Marinissen (palindrome percussion on track 7). "Though Van Wissem draws inspiration from Renaissance period forms, the use of computer-edited airport recordings fixes these pieces firmly in the now, and his approach to the lute is such that this CD would not be out of place in the John Fahey section of your music collection. Dreamy, oblique and minimal, the music insinuates itself into the listener's mind like a subliminal message or an overheard snippet of conversation." --Pete Gershon, Signal to Noise

Various: Anthology of Rebetiko Songs 1933-1940 Code:6302 Price:
$16.00

| This is yet another great collection from the Greek Archives series. Arguably the highlights here are the songs of Stratos Payoumitzis, who had one of the greatest singing voices of early Rembetika. Sadly, like so many of the musicians, Stratos' golden years were difficult and tragic ones. He died performing on stage in New York in 1971, and a collection had to be taken up to ship his body home. There is quite a bit of work by Kavouris and Skarvelis on this disc as well. Also some great tracks from Markos, Hatzichristos, and an absolutely great version of Artemis doing his classic, "Girl From Tsitsifies". A Diamandidis and A Amiralis: Hassapiko Laterna G. Kavouras: What Can I Do? I Love You! Takis Nikolaou: In Marigo's "tekes" Kostas Roukounas: Marika, The Hashish Smoker Stellakis Perpiniadis: You Don't Remember Who I Am Stratos Payoumtzis: Amanes Sabah G. Kavouras: I Have A Secret Sorrow Markos Vamvakaris: Antonis The Boatman Anestis Delias: Girl From Tsitsifies Stratos Payoumtzis: Warm-Hearted Dina Stellakis Perpiniadis: You Are Not For Me Marika Frantzeskopoulou ("Politissa"): You Can't Fool Me G. Kavouras: I Don't Want You To Look At Me A. Hatzichristos, M Vamvakaris and G. Papaioannou: I'll Drop By Tonight Georgia Mittaki: Mother, I Want A Man Stratos Payoumtzis and Stellakis Perpiniadis: I Want Money And A House Giorgos Kavouas: Don't Refuse Me, Little One Stellakis Perpiniadis: Magdalo Stratos Payoumtzis: I Met A Dark-Eyed Girl

| Currently Out of Stock, Expected back Fall 2006
This is the perfect addition to Vol. 1, and generally follows up on that disc's attitude to capture the music of the outcast, fringe society. Especially great here is the Artemis stuff; He was one of the Rembetises to succumb to heroin and was found dead in the streets, clutching his Bouzouki, at age 31. There are also great pieces here by his contemporaries from the Piraeus Quartet, and main staples from Stelios Keromitis and Kostas Skarvelis. Markos Vamvakaris: Alana From Piraeus Nota Kalleli: My Girl From Pangrati Stellakis Perpiniadis: Wily Woman Markos Vamvakaris: When You See Me Go By Nontas Sgouras: Gambler Kostas Roukounas: Don't Speak To Me Any More Stelios Keromitis: In Baboulas' Dive Stellakis Perpiniadis: It's Showing Zacharias Kassimati and Rita Abadzi: The Widow And The Manghas Yorgos Batis: The Recording Producers Antonis Diamantidis or Dalgas: Elenaru Kostas Roukounas: My Pipina A. Kostis: I Wasted Away Kostas Roukounas: Soropis Yorgos Batis: Athenian Taxim And Zeibekiko Katina Tsakiri and Stratos Payoumtzis: My Zoitsa Yannis Ioannidis: These Cops Antonis Diamantidis or Dalgas: Manghas

| When Gareth Williams died on Christmas Eve 2001 at the age of 48, the world lost a huge personality and a unique creative talent, yet little is known of his work outside of the legendary group This Heat. With this first official release on Compact Disc of Williams's solo and collaborative works from 1985, Life and Living Records take the first steps to correcting this imbalance. "Flaming Tunes" was recorded by Gareth Williams and Mary Currie with input from a variety of contributors including fellow This Heat member Charles Bullen, long term collaborators Martin Harrison and Rick Wilson, Mick Hobbs and others.
