"A new series of 2003 remastered reissues for the early Kevin Ayers catalog, each with large quantities of bonus tracks and extensive booklets. Very well done overall. "Originally scheduled for release in late January 1973, the album, Bananamour appeared as Harvest SHVL 807 in May 1973. The albums release was preceded by the appearance of the single 'Caribbean Moon' c/w 'Take Me To Tahiti' on April 19th as Harvest HAFT 5071.   Bailey, Derek: Carpal Tunnel
Code:6092
Price: $15.99
Quantity in Basket: none
"Quite literally one of the most original and influential guitarists on the planet, Derek Bailey has completely revolutionized the language of guitar music in the twentieth century. His work has been championed by almost every cutting edge guitarist: Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, Buckethead, Jerry Garcia, but his influence reaches far far beyond the insular world of guitar freaks, to classical composers such as Brian Ferneyhough and Karlheinz Stockhausen, creative musicians Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Leo Smith, jazz players Dave Holland, Steve Lacy and Milford Graves, rock bands Sonic Youth, Fantomas and so many more. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, his first solo recording since the best selling Ballads album of 2003, finds Derek again in a wistful romantic mood, and these three musings for solo guitar are some of his most soulful and emotional documents ever. Essential late recordings by a man who has helped improvisation change the world". -Tzadik

Barrett, Syd: Barrett Barrett, Syd: Barrett
Code:6555
Price: $18.00
Quantity in Basket: none
"UK version (with bonus tracks not found on the domestic US version), of the 2nd Syd Barrett solo album. Originally released in November 1970 on Harvest. Barrett was the second and final studio album of new material released by former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett. 'Shortly after releasing his first album, The Madcap Laughs, Barrett appeared on John Peel's Top Gear radio show where he presented only one song from the newly released album. Two days later, he began working on his second album in the Abbey Road Studios, this time with Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Rick Wright as producers and musicians. The main aim for the Barrett sessions was to give Syd the structure and focus many felt was missing during the long and unwieldy sessions for The Madcap Laughs. Thus, the sessions were more efficiently run -- with much unreleased material recorded -- and the album was finished in far less time than it took to complete The Madcap Laughs. In addition, with the unpredictability and at times despairing nature of Madcap greatly decreased, the rigid format of the new sessions ended up giving Barrett a less inventive flavor, as a result. Nonetheless, Barrett does indeed have some memorable songs, least of all 'Baby Lemonade,' 'Dominoes' and 'Gigolo Aunt,' all of which are as well known to Barrett fans as 'See Emily Play' and 'Astronomy Domine.' Although not generally as highly regarded as The Madcap Laughs, Barrett -- of which, the cover was painted by Syd himself -- is still a much-prized recording from its maker. Includes seven bonus tracks including: 'Baby Lemonade (Take 1),' 'Waving My Arms In The Air (Take 1),' 'I Never Lied To You (Take 1),' 'Love Song (Take 1),' 'Dominoes (Take 1),' 'Dominoes (Take 2),' 'It Is Obvious (Take 2).'" -Forced Exposure

"UK version (with bonus tracks not found on the domestic US version), of the first Syd Barrett solo album. Originally released on Harvest in January 1970. 'During February 1968, Dave Gilmour had been drafted into The Pink Floyd and for a brief time they existed as a 5-piece. Soon, however, rumours circulated that Syd Barrett would be taking on a 'Brian Wilson' role, writing and recording material 'behind the scenes.' But by April it was clear that he had been ousted completely. Within a month of his axing, Barrett was back in Abbey Road. With his manager Pete Jenner as producer, Barrett began his solo career. Blending angular, riveting guitar-work and jaunty improvisation with more fragile and enchanting pieces, Barrett composed in a suitably elegiac fashion. Later in the recording process, Gilmour and Roger Waters would aid in co-production, shepherding Barrett through many takes and re-takes of what finally gelled as his most skilled and coherent solo record. Includes six bonus tracks including 'Octopus (Takes 1&2)', 'It's No Good Trying (Take 5)', 'Love You (Take 1)', 'Love You (Take 3)', 'She Took A Long Cold Look At Me (Take 4)', Golden Hair (Take 5)'." -Forced Exposure

For the 2007 edition of FIMAB, producer Michel Levasseur invited Braxton to perform twice: with his 12+1tet as well as with the Diamond Curtain Wall Trio with Taylor Ho Bynum and guitarist Mary Halvorson. The audience had been primed for the large ensemble by the 2005 sextet performance and the recentboxed set of the large ensemble's four-night run at the Iridium in New York. But Diamon Curtain Wall was relatively new. Here was an intimate opportunity to hear Braxton feature his recent foray into the world of laptop and interactive electronics. Braxton and laptop? What would this element bring to his music? Use of electronics is hardly unprecedented in Braxton's music. After all, he played with Richard Teitelbaum starting in the early '70s and featured Bob Ostertag on synthesizer on the late 70's version of his creative orchestra. But for the first time, Braxton was diving in to working with interactive electronics himself! - Michael Rosenstein

Cutler, Chris: There And Back Again Cutler, Chris: There And Back Again
Code:6909
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Like its companion 'Twice around the Earth (ReR CC2), 'There and Back Again' is derived from a selection of the 365 location recordings made for Cutler's daily Resonance FM radio programme 'Out of the Blue Radio' (2004-2005). It takes extracts from 44 of these environmental recordings to explore - amongst other things - the way memory works, and how the experience of passing time is constructed. That's subtext. More important, it should make enjoyably complex listening: surprising, serendipitous, mundane but alien - the commonplace transfigured. There and Back Again offers an agglomeration of inadvertent sounds, made haphazardly by the world - and some of its inhabitants, that were never meant to survive, and were certainly not meant to be listened to repeatedly. And yet... Since about a quarter of the locations, though not the extracts are the same as those on 'Twice', reading across the two CDs adds another dimension of listening to the memory puzzle that these fleeting but permanent works explore.

Drake, Bob: What Day Is It ? Drake, Bob: What Day Is It ?
Code:5338
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
What Day Is It ? is the re-issue of Bob's very first solo disc (originally self-manufactured in art packaging – here tho, professionally packaged for mass market sales). It already exhibits Bob's characteristic traits: golden fingers, hi-wire vocals, eyebrow-raising country-picking, loose-but-right-in-the-pocket drums, eccentric chord inversions, and a bass-guitar sound to die for. Sitting happily with the fantasy 'Yes' Euro-progressive surface is the rather more substantial depth of a bluegrass and rooted-rock American culture; an almost unique combination and one hard to imitate (or even imagine, until you hear Bob do it). But then, Bob has always marched to the beat of a different drummer, manifestly careless of the fashion or of the easier, more superficial aspects of the music he has absorbed.

Frith, Fred: Impur II Frith, Fred: Impur II
Code:7708
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Impur II is totally different from Impur I - which was a deconstructed, spatialised simultaneity of musical events that could only be heard through open windows or by wandering through rooms - Impur 2 took the form of an unannounced performance across which audience members had to stumble by chance (and then collect their friends - or not). Both events formed part of a commission by L'Ecole Nationale de Musique de Villurbanne in May 1996.This recording, painstakingly edited and re-mastered by Fred, appears as a full-on concert by a large 19 strong ensemble with Fred conducting as well as playing. It's built on rhythm, harmony, rock noise, exotic instrumentation, power, complexity and melodic writing - with intermittent stretches of chaos, eccentricity and theatre, and fits comfortably into the aesthetic of his earlier performing ensemble projects, like Gravity, Skeleton Crew and Keep the Dog.

Frith, Fred: Impur Frith, Fred: Impur
Code:6910
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
In 1996, at the end of a two year residency, Fred organised an event at L'Ecole Nationale de Musique de Villeurbanne in France involving as many of the students as possible, grouped according to their departments - early music, rock, African drumming, classical &c. Each group was set up in a different room in the school building and during the concert the public was encouraged to wander around creating their own mix, or to sit in the courtyard and listen to the sound drifting out through the open windows. For their part, each group of musicians had to play musical material Fred had prepared for them - occasionally they could improvise. In order to co-ordinate all the groups, who naturally couldn't hear each other, everyone followed a precise time-score prepared by Fred (55 minutes regulated by synchronized stopwatches). The entire event was recorded on 4 A-DAT machines, to be mixed down later, and this CD is the result: a lurching, complex and capricious beast with many heads: an orchestra tuning up; a salute to Sonny Blount; a roiling chaotic mass of sound splitting into layers, colliding back together, pullulating, ululating, roaring and sometimes mewing like a kitten.

This is Fred's sixth CD of music for dance, featuring three commissions by three different choreographers each sharing, as Fred says ' a certain obsession with melodic deconstruction.' Two of them feature - and were especially written for - the remarkable violinist Carla Kihlstedt. Fred and Carla perform one of them (Fred playing a huge array of instruments here as on all pieces), are joined by Fred Guiliano, (samples) and Gail Brand (trombone) on another, while the third features Fred, Hande Erdem (violin) and Threresa Wong (cello). These are complex studio compositions characterised by a deceptive simplicity, layers and plateaux, rhythm and colour.

Back in the fall of 2001, I couldn't keep my eyes off of a pair of pictures from the New York Times: one was the World Trade Center site after the 9/11 attacks, and the other was a satellite picture of Kabul, a few days before the US raid. Both looked like surfaces of petrified planets and were disturbingly similar. Several months later, I found myself on a near-empty flight from NYC to Tokyo, my first return to Japan since I emigrated in 1992. Soon after my feet touched the ground, I heard that the US had started bombing Iraq. (And the day I returned to NYC, the US administration proclaimed the end of the war.) Rather than making a statement based on what I already knew and being gung ho" about it , I started to research and collect stories about what was really going on in Iraq and beyond; then I came up with music for each title. I see this as a documentary film without pictures. I returned to Japan in 2004 and was joined by my old colleagues Otomo and Uemura. Together we have a strong, unique voice, like a pack. We can howl together like "El Lobos." I hope the music will unfold the stories as you listen. I hope too that you will keep your eyes and ears open to new stories. What you find may be gut-wrenching or depressing but sometimes darkness can help you find a way--a personal revolution or even a social progression--like Caravaggio's paintings or Johnny Cash's hymns can." --Kato Hideki August 20, 2005 Brooklyn, NYC

Hodkinson, Tim: Sketch of Now Hodkinson, Tim: Sketch of Now
Code:6654
Price: $16.96
Quantity in Basket: none
Tim Hodgkinson co-founded the politically and musically radical free-jazz/progressive rock group Henry Cow in 1968, which also featured guitarist Fred Frith. He regards his membership in this group, with the opportunity to work closely and collectively with other instrumentalists in developing new sound worlds, as the foundation of his musical education. In addition to composing, Hodgkinson continues to perform as an improviser (clarinets, saxophones, and keyboards) and considers the practice of improvisation as an important aesthetic form in contemporary music. This disc explores Hodgkinson's other side as a composer, and also as a soloist, of recent compositions for ensembles (2001-2004). The works explore a variety of processes and influences - Korean and ritual Siberian music, improvisation, the actual use of Musique Concrete, and combinations/transformations of acoustic instruments with electronics and tape.

Leandre, Joelle: Le Mans Jazz Festival (Dbl) Leandre, Joelle: Le Mans Jazz Festival (Dbl)
Code:6864
Price: $30.95
Quantity in Basket: none
At the Le Mans Jazz Festival is a double-disc set from the same fest where Face It! was recorded and despite being all new recordings is something of a best-of for Léandre. Five standing groups, all featuring Léandre, are given 20-30 minutes of playing time each. Her longstanding trio Les Diaboliques (with vocalist Maggie Nicols and pianist Irene Schweizer) seems more intuitive, less character-driven, then on previous recordings. The duo with fellow bassist William Parker is as richly complex as ever. Her duo with violinist India Cooke is a fairly recent project, but seems to be about the most like-minded she's had. And the final two groupings (a trio with percussionist Mark Nauseef and trumpeter Markus Stockhausen and a quartet with percussionist Paul Lovens, trombonist Sebi Tramontana and violinist Carlos Zingaro) show her - as with Quartet Noir, though perhaps to better results - as a perceptive group improviser.

An excellent CD of pieces for guitars, usually more than one at a time, played in unconventional ways - in real time - with little in the way of electronic processing but rather using electric fans, ebow, slide, violin bow, multiple simultaneous instruments. What makes it especially interesting is the content: these are interpretations of tunes by Ornette Coleman, The Beatles, Connie Bauer, Charlie Haden and of traditional Klezmer, Japanese and Islamic melodies. Very unusual, very successful. A fine work, and nicely packaged.

Pere Ubu: London * Texas Pere Ubu: London * Texas
Code:7710
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
A missing piece of the Ubu jigsaw, and a fine memento of a great band, London Texas is a satisfyingly hi-fi live recording of the sadly short-lived line-up that toured briefly between the arrival of Eric Drew Feldman and the departure of Chris Cutler. Certainly it's the best recording of the Scott, Cutler, Maimone rhythm section - though the whole band is on lean-back-intense concert form. Coming back to it, this was the end of a particular era, of a certain kind of band: the songs are economical and tightly arranged but harmonically elaborated - with strongly performative and musical underpinning (there's a new aesthetic in place now); it's an approach that takes no prisoners. Then there's the bonus of that scary live energy. Studio recordings just can't do this. London Texas stings like a bee - in a beret.

Louis Pernot: Baroque Lute
This is the first recording of the seventeenth-century masterpiece, "The Book of Perrine". It comprises some of the most beautiful pieces exclusively written for baroque lute by Ennemond Gaultier, professor to the Queen of France, and his equally notable cousin, Denis. Much of the score was lost until quite recently, and the French, master lutenist, Louis Peron, has worked tirelessly for the past decade to perfect its performance. The historical importance of this disc to the world of classical music cannot be overstated. (Really, I'm not worthy ! – Dave K.). Maestro Pernot, a Protestant Minister who holds PHD's in both philosophy and engineering, was the star pupil of master lutenist, Antoine Geoffrey-Dechaume. He is also a lerned scholar of theology, Hebrew and Ancient Greek. Prior to this recording, EMI Records chose him to be the lute master for their box set, "A Treasury of Bach", and he was the featured artist on Universal's recording of Gaultier's "Devine Rhetoric", another historic, first recording.

Simonis Lucas: Stots Simonis Lucas: Stots
Code:6906
Price: $9.00
Quantity in Basket: none
Lucas is one of the finest and longest-standing artistic talents in the Rotterdam scene. He's best known for his off-kilter (read: approaching insane) songs with the Dutch bands Dull Schicksall, AA Kismet and Vril. But on this disk Lucas abandons the song-form and follows up on his early penchant for sound experimentation and improvisation, mostly utilizing guitars, but vocal utterances of all kinds and field recordings are prominent as well. An attempt of this sort under such circumstances is usually a ploy by musicians to either gain in stature or prestige to a different circle of contemporaries; but Simonis, being the gentlemanly sort he is, can only approach this territory in the most sincere of ways, and it shows. Arrogance is replaced by altruism, uncertainty by assuredness, and bombast or shock by plain musical maturity. Hence there's not a thing meretricious about this recording. It's as honest as they come. And while there may be a nod or two to the likes of Fred Frith or later AMM, they pass soon enough, leaving the great majority of this disk in a class by itself. Radical and immensely enjoyable !

"Though Van Wissem draws inspiration from Renaissance period forms, the use of computer-edited airport recordings fixes these pieces firmly in the now, and his approach to the lute is such that this CD would not be out of place in the John Fahey section of your music collection. Dreamy, oblique and minimal, the music insinuates itself into the listener's mind like a subliminal message or an overheard snippet of conversation." --Pete Gershon, Signal to Noise
