Sampler and turntable band/force of nature underpin spoken, howled, sneered, pure sound, stand-up and sometimes almost sung monologues by JB. Theatre, noise and club tempi, with Rolls Royce action from Bob and Otomo. Some will find the texts entertaining, others may find themselves nonplussed (I count myself mainly in the latter category) but they mostly fit right in. There are spooky and funny moments. And a great overture.

"Before Sampling, there was analog tape, and...Bob Ostertag's Getting A Head with Fred Frith and Charles K. Noyes. An underground classic of tape manipulation from before the days of samplers. Best known for his work with computers, here a young Ostertag plays an instrument consisting of a highly unstable and peculiar recording system, which uses helium balloons to hold up tape loops between three tape recorders made to malfunction in a variety of ways. Even today there is no computer that can do quite what this contraption does. Ostertag uses this rather sculptural and bizarre contraption to manipulate the brilliant guitar playing of Fred Frith, and the elusive percussion work of Charles K. Noyes. Interesting and deeply considered.These are massive noise constructions, largely organised, with a great deal of processing, studio work and multitracking, not comparable to anything else I can think of. Great stretches, maybe sometimes too diffuse, but.. Best would be to try one and see how you get on with it, either will do.
