Antheil, George: Dreams, Piano Concerto No. 2 Serenade No.2 Antheil, George: Dreams, Piano Concerto No. 2 Serenade No.2
Code:6883
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"A concert pianist and vanguard composer, George Antheil (1900-1959) became known as the 'Bad Boy of Music.' The ultimate American in Paris, Antheil was an avant-garde provocateur of the first order who made his name composing iconoclastic compositions: the loudest and brashest classical music of his time. But this album gives us three new performances -- two of them world-premiere recordings -- which reveal another, forgotten side of Antheil: the incurable romantic. Written in 1926, after the height of Antheil's radical period, the 'Piano Concerto No. 2' is an experiment in classical form. The work contains the same sudden juxtapositions and abrupt contrasts of mood as his futurist music. But the excesses of his recent ballet mécanique (written for 16 player pianos!) are compensated for by an almost spare, baroque orchestration and motifs that draw on Bach as much as on Stravinsky. In three movements, Antheil employs a more restrained but still exuberant style. The beautifully meditative slow movement is followed by a virtuosic and compelling toccata. Each movement ends on an overtly Bachian cadence, most obvious in the sweetly naive coda of the final movement. The ballet 'Dreams' (1935) had a prior existence in Paris. It was called 'Les Songes,' and Darius Milhaud wrote the original music in 1933, later discarded in favor of Antheil's score. Antheil plays sarcastically with contradictions: waltz vs. march; folk song vs. orchestral romanticism. This is marvelous ballet music, and the unexpected structural and melodic changes keep us on the edge of our seat: amused and entertained. The lack of a formal structure does not hamper Antheil; he seemed to thrive on it, both in this piece, and in many others he wrote. Despite the cut-and-paste exoticism and the predictable thematic material, this music sounds appealingly American -- folksy, populist, and engaging. Antheil's brilliant orchestration makes these works shine. Not much is known about the genesis of the 'Serenade No. 2' (1948). As the work neared completion, Antheil wrote, the 'Serenade' '...is as important, for me, as a new symphony; indeed, it can be played by a major symphony orchestra.' It's a beautifully orchestrated, lush work. Both serenades are in three movements -- the first is for strings alone while the second adds a wind section and a percussionist." -Forced Exposure

Highly interesting (bar one I think) collection of pieces for virtual pianist, influenced by Stockhausen, Cage, Feldman, Boulez, Nancarrow 'new music has enabled anyone with a sense of sound and form to make great music' says Martin Archer, and then puts his sequencer and various devices on the line as proof. A courageous man, and you the jury. I think this is a fascinating record both for it's proposition, application and listening quality.

Necks pianist double CD of Necks style immediate-time pieces where the structure is all internal and focuses tightly on the progress from moment to moment. A borderline music of contradictions where simplicity arises out of complexity, openness flows from a closed horizon, facility is built on difficulty, where more or less all other distractions (composition, development, evolution) are put aside by repetition, leaving time and a feeling for sound at the centre of the work..

  Crispell, Marilyn (Trio): Storyteller
Code:6105
Price: $15.99
Quantity in Basket: none
"Seven years after the unprecedented ECM debut, Nothing Ever Was, Anyway, and three years after the stellar Amaryllis, pianist Marilyn Crispell gives listeners another trip down her ever deepening cavern of mystery and imagination. Teamed once again with drummer and composer Paul Motian and new bassist Mark Helias, Crispell builds an even sturdier tension bridge between her increasing focus on harmonic and melodic interplay and dynamic intensity. The polarities are the immediate way into this set, which is so full of ambiguities and spectral presences one could say it is haunted. Crispell's physicality is held in check for most of the proceedings here, but it is ever present. There is a tautness to these performances that is held firmly by the steady, sinewy rhythmic direction of Helias (who contributed two fine tunes to this set). Crispell wrote three pieces for this recording, all of them signifying a direction the ensemble travels in a labyrinthine fashion for a time. These are underscored and elaborated upon in her choice of six of Motian's tunes covering some 30 years. In fact, the title track, which feels like a Crispell signature, was composed by Motian. What sets Storyteller apart from most recordings out there is its depth of feeling and the unveiled manner in which it is displayed... another triumph for Crispell". -Thom Jurek, AMG

Code:3284

"Reissue of the sole album of this Catalan duo, Feliu Gasull (Spanish guitar) and Joan Albert Amargós (piano), both cousins. Post-Musica Urbana, originally released by Edigsa in 1977 and never reissued before. Recommended for lovers of Toti Soler, Musica Urbana and progressive in general. "After the classic Musica Urbana, here is my other favourite Spanish release from the late '70s, featuring Joan Albert Amargos, Musica Urbana's keyboard player and main composer, who here plays mostly acoustic and some electric piano, and the remarkable acoustic guitarist Feliu Gusul. This is pure music; breathtakingly executed (and exquisitely recorded, you can even hear the sharp intake of breath sometimes as Feliu negotiates some impossible fingering). Occasionally other electric instruments, percussion, woodwinds are added. This has all the imagination and energy of '60s jazz, though speaking a completely different musical language; very Spanish, wholly original. A classic." -- Chris Cutler."

Hodkinson, Tim: Sketch of Now Hodkinson, Tim: Sketch of Now
Code:6654
Price: $16.96
Quantity in Basket: none
Tim Hodgkinson co-founded the politically and musically radical free-jazz/progressive rock group Henry Cow in 1968, which also featured guitarist Fred Frith. He regards his membership in this group, with the opportunity to work closely and collectively with other instrumentalists in developing new sound worlds, as the foundation of his musical education. In addition to composing, Hodgkinson continues to perform as an improviser (clarinets, saxophones, and keyboards) and considers the practice of improvisation as an important aesthetic form in contemporary music. This disc explores Hodgkinson's other side as a composer, and also as a soloist, of recent compositions for ensembles (2001-2004). The works explore a variety of processes and influences - Korean and ritual Siberian music, improvisation, the actual use of Musique Concrete, and combinations/transformations of acoustic instruments with electronics and tape.

BIS's complete edition of the late Gyorgy Ligeti's piano music restores both of Fredrik Ullén's single-disc Ligeti releases, respectively issued in 1996 and 1998. Ullén has supplemented these with the two Etudes Ligeti completed after the original discs came out (À bout de soufflé and Canon), plus two first recordings: L'Arrache-Coeur (a 1994 work originally intended as Etude No. 11) and Four Early Piano Pieces (Basso Ostinato) from 1941. For the two-piano and one-piano-four-hands works, Ullén overdubs himself. As the cliché goes, Ullén may have equals in Ligeti's innovative Etudes, but few serious rivals.

Quiet, slow, exquisite piano pieces. Not quite 'furniture music' because it does seem to want to be heard, nor Eno- style wallpaper music, because it's neither repetitive nor mechanical; nevertheless it colours the air and creates space rather than intrude on the ear and demand attention. A very medium to work in, here impressively well achieved.

Composer: Conlon Nancarrow; Performed by the Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo. Features mostly early works: "Studiies for Player Piano (1949-60), "Three Canons for Ursula" (1988), "Tango?" (1984), "Three Two-Part Studies" (1940s), "Prelude" (1935), "Blues" (1935), "Sonatina" (1945). "The Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo -- plays works by Conlon Nancarrow, one of the most unusual and yet most influential American composers in the history of twentieth century music. In addition to works originally written for piano two-hands there are transcriptions for piano four-hands of works written for two hands, as well as eleven 'Studies for Player Piano' transcribed for piano four-hands on this wonderful CD. It turned to be a magical event to listen to these sometimes romantic or jazzy, abrupt or wild, but always deeply original pieces full of wit and surprises. [...] The two ladies understood it perfectly, to bring the mechanical element to light but with incredible charm and a furioso technique.

Roger Trigaux's post-Univers Zero band, PRESENT, returns with a vengeance on this release: a new studio album CD, plus a three-hour DVD. The DVD is comprised of live footage from the band's two RIO France performances in 2007, and roughly half of the Gouveia Art Rock Festival performance from 2005. As an added bonus, there is archival footage, some of which dates back to the early days of the band, featuring Daniel Denis and Christian Genet. All of this has been exquisitely recorded and mixed by Udi Koomran, with post-video work by Asaf Carmeli, both of whom were out to re-define the parameters of modern-day Rock In Opposition products. A signature collection of exquisite works for onde Martinot and piano by Olivier Messiaen, N'Guyen Thien Dao, Jacques Charpentier and Tristan Murail, exploring the many voices of this extraordinary instrument. The onde (or ondes musicales or le Martenot) was first demonstrated at the Paris Conservatoire in 1928 and immediately attracted the attention of Varese, Milhaud, Koechlin, Jolivet, Honegger and Messiaen, who all wrote for it - cumulatively ensuring its survival. Although only a year younger than the theremin, the onde is a far more sophisticated, complex and versatile instrument, not least because of the combination it offers of pitched and glissando tones, and the wide range of filters and different resonating media through which it can sound: loudspeakers, gongs, sympathetic resonating strings and reverberant enclosures. The compositions here exploit every unearthly aspect of the instrument and are beautifully performed: a remarkable and exquisite collection.

Irene Schweizer: Piano - George Lewis: Tombone - Maggie Nichols: Voice - Joelle Leandre: bass - Gunter Sommer: Drums - Paul Lovens: Drums
At the first Taktlos Festival in 1984, Irène Schweizer assembled several chosen musician to a three-day improvisation meeting. The recordings, which appeared in 1986 as the first Intakt LPs, reveal the improvisational art of the pianist in three different formations: Schweizer and Lewis / Schweizer, Nicols and Sommer / Schweizer, Léandre and Lovens. Twenty years after their initial release, these improvisations haven't lost any of their playful inventiveness, liveliness, power and originality. "A city tour through musical liberated zones" was what Zurich press wrote after the festival. In addition, the record is a cultural-political document of the atmosphere of awakening in Zurich in the eighties; moreover, it marks the beginning of the jazz label, Intakt Records, as well as that of the Taktlos Festival.

Code:7775
Price: $16.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Two related classic Saturn LP reissues on a single CD, both recorded at the Detroit Jazz Centre - in 1980 and 1981 respectively. They share an excellent sound quality and great playing - there's a classic version of Rocket No.9 and plenty of otherworldly Moog and electronic keyboards - up there with Ra's best on record. Rocket excepted, all the pieces are original to these LPs and don't appear elsewhere, though the first track of Purple Star Zone is heard again at the end, with another name (exactly as it was on the 2 LPs), so it was clearly much liked by the boss. These were 10 -14 piece bands, featuring the regulars, including June Tyson, and some visiting guests. The first LP features prominent electric guitar (not identified in the personnel list on the CD - but every listing I've seen for these LPs is different; this one should be fairly accurate in general, since the promoter helped to get the CD together). A fine release, touched with greatness. And with a good sound. Comes in the usual elaborate gatefold digipack covers for which the Artyard label is justly praised.

Sun Ra: Nidhamu + Dark Myth Equation Visitation Sun Ra: Nidhamu + Dark Myth Equation Visitation
Code:7683
Price: $17.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Nidhamu & Dark Myth Visitation Equation complete the Egypt trilogy. Most remarkable is 'Nidhamu' (the second release of the series, half recorded at the Balloon Theatre, the other half at Hartmut Geerken's house in Heliopolis) - a remarkable document: austere and very out there. Electric keyboards and an eerie 'Discipline No.11'set the scene, and after some solo Moog there's a spooky miniature 'Discipline No.15' introducing another long Moog and keyboards solo: 35 pretty abstract minutes that just slip by. 'Dark Myth Visitation Equation' follows (this was the first LP release, and has also been known as Sun Ra in Egypt Vol 1 and Nature's God). The first tracks are from the Cairo TV broadcast and the whole collection features more familiar groove-based pieces characteristic of the period, interspersed with Moog and electric keyboard solos. June Tyson reappears for 'To Nature's God' and the highly eccentric 'Why go to the Moon?'

Another much sought after and long unavailable title recorded in 1974 with a smallish ensemble consisting (probably) of stalwarts Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, Danny David, James Jacson, Akh Tal Ebah, Clifford Jarvis, Artakatune, and a new electric guitarist, Sly, and released on Saturn in the same year. This sounds like a studio recording and careful thought out - most of the compositions appear only on this record (apart from versions of Nature's God and Space is the Place), and include a chain of very interesting accompanied /interpolated) spoken texts: There is a Change in the Air, The Antique Blacks, The ridiculous "I" and the Cosmos "Me" as well as a very long and scary coda to Space is the Place. Ra plays Rocksichord and Moog throughout (solo on track 7 and at the end of track 8). Theatrical and political; a fascinating release.

Tudor, David And Mumma Gordon: Rainforest II (Dbl. Disk) Tudor, David And Mumma Gordon: Rainforest II (Dbl. Disk)
Code:6810
Price: $27.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"This historic release of a simultaneous performance by David Tudor and John Cage of 'Rainforest II' and 'Mureau', recorded live by Radio Bremen on May 5, 1972, preserves the only surviving performance of the second of Tudor's Rainforest series. In addition, it documents one of the precious few recorded collaborations between these two visionaries. In 1970 Cage composed the piece called 'Mureau', in which phrases from Thoreau's journals (in particular, passages which touch on the subject of music) are used as the springboard for an elaborate collage. The resultant fabric combines elements of sense and nonsense, as it veers between contextual meaning and a sort of abstract, linguistic vocalize. In Cage's public readings of 'Mureau', he explored a number of performance variables/differences in tempo, vocal timbre, pitch, register, and dynamics. A similar range will be apparent, in fact, when listening to this recorded performance. This simultaneous performance of 'Mureau' and 'Rainforest II' took place in a large concert hall before an audience, rather than privately in a recording studio. Whereas in other performance realizations (such as their legendary Indeterminacy collaboration) the two men had been placed in separate isolation booths, here the two shared the same performance space, so that each could hear and see the other person's activity. In fact, Cage and Tudor sat quite close to one another at the center of the stage, Cage performing 'Mureau' as a four-channel realization -- one live channel against three pre-recorded tracks, all of them his own voice and Tudor actively engaged in real-time processing of Cage's vocal material, using it to generate electronic loudspeaker-filter events. Essential listening for anyone interested in the work of either composer." -Forced Exposure

"A concert performance using a very rare Luthéal piano. The composer/improviser writes: 'Visual interlocking symmetries and geometric shapes are transferred to the audible world of rhythm and counterpoint, with the spirit and energy of jazz, improvisation and folk music always at the heart of the performance. The piece contains a sequence of 52 closely linked pentatonic scales. Each scale has two pre-established areas in which ideas for improvisations can be explored and developed, and because the piece is continuous, the player and listeners take part in a journey that lasts about one hour'." -Forced Exposure
