ART BEARS: REVISITED ART BEARS: REVISITED
Price: $25.95
Quantity in Basket: none
As the years passed and technology marched on, Art Bears decided to let other artists to remix the three original albums. On the 3 disks referred to as "REVISITED" in this box, we are treated to how others perceive the importance of the Art Bears' back catalog by their own standards in the current studio world, using the resurrected master tapes as a starting point. In all cases the work is as radical today as it was when the band first offered it up a quarter of a century ago. Features Bob Drake, Stephan Tickmayer, Jon Rose, Christian Marclay Thomas Dimuzio, Musci-Venosta, Lars Pedersen (When), Warrick Swinney (The Kalahari Surfers), Biota, The Residents, Otomo Yoshida, and, well....too many more to mention here. You get the idea. It harkens the Art Bears trilogy into a new era of technology, aesthetic and sound, all of which had yet to be introduced back when the original albums were made. Also on these disks are previously unreleased concert recordings, a reissue of the "Collapse" 45 rpm (from Ralph Records), a newly completed piece by the band aptly called," Rebirth" (which was hitherto a poem in the coveted "Wintersongs" book), "All Hail" from the Recommended Sampler, and the extremely rare live version of "Coda to Man and Boy" from the Cantu recording.

Dockstader, Tod: Aerial 3 Dockstader, Tod: Aerial 3
Price: $17.95
Quantity in Basket: none
This release is the third and last in a three part series. Volume One has been released in March 2005 inside a slipcase's limited edition. Volume Two and Three are released separately and packaged in individual standard jewel cases that will conveniently fit into the slipcase provided with Volume One. Dockstader describes the work in which he plays the radio, as if it were a musical instrument. He "...followed David Myers' suggestion to allow each piece to flow into the next - making a continuous journey to the end." This return of Dockstader is something to cherish, not just because his output has been so limited and scarce but because what we do have is so intriguing, persuasive and cliché-free; the music of an inspired explorer who trails in nobody's slipstream' - The Wire

Krieger,Ulrich: Early American Minimalism Krieger,Ulrich: Early American Minimalism
Price: $14.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"...Early American Minimalism. Featuring classic 1960s works by: Steve Reich, Terry Riley & Philip Glass. 'Walls of Sound is about what I call: 'static music' -- music that isn't semantic, gestured, or narrative, that doesn't move or change atmospherically, and isn't dramatic or has a development in the traditional European sense. If it changes it does it very slowly. The emphasis lies on the 'aural sculpture' in which one enters not just with the ears, but also physically with the whole body, and eventually with your mind, altering your perception. Inside the sculpture, inside the static, there are endless changing details, variations and microcosms. In a certain way it is a modern form of trance or ritualistic music without a pre-fixed ritual. This work is about 'pattern music', general mostly referred to as 'Minimal Music'. A music that uses as its main technique repeated (modal) patterns, which get varied or shifted against each other, generating 'audio walls', taking the emphasis and attention away from the original melodic pattern material towards the aural sculpture, the acoustic phenomenon. This is true for the early American Minimalism before 1970, which still was very conceptual, and did hold a strong influence from Fluxus ('1+1', 'Pendulumn Music'). Riley and La Monte Young had been active in the Fluxus scene. Also Conceptual Art, Minimal Art and Op Art were somehow related to and an influence for Minimal Music. Often the early Minimal Music pieces were just pure concepts (Pendulumn Music). This new music, which saw it's light in the 60s in America, was anti- or at least non-European. Young American composers were trying to find alternatives away from extremely intellectual European 'New Music' aesthetics, techniques of Serialism, Ultra-Expressionism and Accademia. The main influences were non-European and non-American: mainly Indian classical music (Riley, Glass) and African music (Reich).' -- Ulrich Krieger. Pieces performed are: Philip Glass: 'Music in Fifths' (1969): Steve Reich: 'Pendulumn Music' (1968): Terry Riley: 'Dorian Reeds' (1964); Philip Glass: '1+1'(1968); Steve Reich: 'Phase' (1967)". -Forced Exposure

Luigi and Antonio Russolo - John Cage - Sonic Youth - Einsturzende Neubauten - Walter Ruttmann - Pierre Schaeffer - Iannis Xenakis - Paul D. Miller aka dj Spooky - Gordon Mumma - Angus Maclise, Tony Conrad and John Cale - Philip Jeck, Otomo Yoshihide and Martin Tétreault - Survival Research Laboratories - Konrad Boehmer - Nam June Paik - Henri Pousseur - Edgard Varèse - Pauline Oliveros - Ryoji Ikeda

This is just the great beginning of a vast anthology of "noise and electronic music" that is planned for the following years in 7 double volumes. This volume begins in the 1920s, with the Russolo brothers, and looks at each decade in turn - Varèse, Cage, Schaeffer, Xenakis, the great pioneers - the first traces of a music that was necessarily revolutionary: electronic music, created from nothing (and hence to be entirely invented). some pieces on these CDs are certainly classics, but there are others, which, though old, were distributed informally or never even released. our more contemporary pieces are, wherever possible, previously unreleased.

Various: Anthology of Rebetiko Songs 1933-1940 Various: Anthology of Rebetiko Songs 1933-1940
Price: $16.00
Quantity in Basket: none

This is yet another great collection from the Greek Archives series. Arguably the highlights here are the songs of Stratos Payoumitzis, who had one of the greatest singing voices of early Rembetika. Sadly, like so many of the musicians, Stratos' golden years were difficult and tragic ones. He died performing on stage in New York in 1971, and a collection had to be taken up to ship his body home. There is quite a bit of work by Kavouris and Skarvelis on this disc as well. Also some great tracks from Markos, Hatzichristos, and an absolutely great version of Artemis doing his classic, "Girl From Tsitsifies".

A Diamandidis and A Amiralis: Hassapiko Laterna
G. Kavouras: What Can I Do? I Love You!
Takis Nikolaou: In Marigo's "tekes"
Kostas Roukounas: Marika, The Hashish Smoker
Stellakis Perpiniadis: You Don't Remember Who I Am
Stratos Payoumtzis: Amanes Sabah
G. Kavouras: I Have A Secret Sorrow
Markos Vamvakaris: Antonis The Boatman
Anestis Delias: Girl From Tsitsifies
Stratos Payoumtzis: Warm-Hearted Dina
Stellakis Perpiniadis: You Are Not For Me
Marika Frantzeskopoulou ("Politissa"): You Can't Fool Me
G. Kavouras: I Don't Want You To Look At Me
A. Hatzichristos, M Vamvakaris and G. Papaioannou: I'll Drop By Tonight
Georgia Mittaki: Mother, I Want A Man
Stratos Payoumtzis and Stellakis Perpiniadis: I Want Money And A House
Giorgos Kavouas: Don't Refuse Me, Little One
Stellakis Perpiniadis: Magdalo
Stratos Payoumtzis: I Met A Dark-Eyed Girl

"'Most music in Japan has little to recommend it; it is a sonic equivalent of those brutal concrete towers or the transitory chaos of multi-storey teen-fashion emporia in Aoyama. But a sonic underground thrives, creatively if not financially, and perhaps it should be compared with the shabby Golden-gai drinking dens of Shinjuku, faint reminders of a losttime when desire and transgression shared endless cups of sake with political and artistic radicalism...-from liner notes by David Toop'". -Sub Rosa

Price: $16.00
Quantity in Basket: none
Currently Out of Stock, Expected back Fall 2006

This is the perfect addition to Vol. 1, and generally follows up on that disc's attitude to capture the music of the outcast, fringe society. Especially great here is the Artemis stuff; He was one of the Rembetises to succumb to heroin and was found dead in the streets, clutching his Bouzouki, at age 31. There are also great pieces here by his contemporaries from the Piraeus Quartet, and main staples from Stelios Keromitis and Kostas Skarvelis.

Markos Vamvakaris: Alana From Piraeus
Nota Kalleli: My Girl From Pangrati
Stellakis Perpiniadis: Wily Woman
Markos Vamvakaris: When You See Me Go By
Nontas Sgouras: Gambler
Kostas Roukounas: Don't Speak To Me Any More
Stelios Keromitis: In Baboulas' Dive
Stellakis Perpiniadis: It's Showing
Zacharias Kassimati and Rita Abadzi: The Widow And The Manghas
Yorgos Batis: The Recording Producers
Antonis Diamantidis or Dalgas: Elenaru
Kostas Roukounas: My Pipina
A. Kostis: I Wasted Away
Kostas Roukounas: Soropis
Yorgos Batis: Athenian Taxim And Zeibekiko
Katina Tsakiri and Stratos Payoumtzis: My Zoitsa
Yannis Ioannidis: These Cops
Antonis Diamantidis or Dalgas: Manghas

  Various: Unclassical
Price: $14.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"This disc presents the Unclassical aspect of our catalogue -- that is, music of today, performed for the most part with traditional acoustic instruments (piano, violin, cello...). Musicians, composers, and pieces, liberated of all dogma and far from the coteries or more practical application of theories. What we present here is a collection of the highspots in contemporary music -- many unpublished pieces for piano, violin, voices or ensemble by Morton Feldman, Luciano Berio, Luigi Dallapiccola, Giacinto Scelsi, Hanns Eisler, Stefan Wolpe. There's even a rare piece by the merican writer Paul Bowles, it ends the record in a way of hommage. Also featured are young composers who took their first breaths with Feldman. David Shea, with commissioned works for Ictus and the ensemble Musique Nouvelle, was a student of Feldman's in New York before becoming John Zorn's protégé in the alternative scene downtown. Brett Dean, viola player at the Berliner, and an Australian member of Frame-Cut-Frame, was, with David Shea, among the first to release successful works based on sampling. There are other young composers with vision too, like Jean-Luc Fafchamps and Renaud De Putter. Plus, included is an unreleased version of musical erratum by Marcel Duchamp, two pieces recorded in Italy by the Russolo Brothers (a murmur recorded in the beginning of the 20's -- a first step towards a musique bruitiste, électronique or concrète). There's also a 1911 recording performed by Claude Debussy himself, an extract from a piece composed by Henri Pousseur for the foundation of Paris' contemporary art center Beaubourg in 1977. Here you'll find the profound investigations pursued by the founders of the electronic music of the 50's and 60's throughout the world". -Forced Exposure
