AMM : At The Roundhouse AMM : At The Roundhouse
Price: $13.99
Quantity in Basket: none
"The International Carnival of Experimental Sound, or ICES '72 for short, was an ambitious festival sprung from the mind of Harvey 'Job' Matusow (1926-2002). Jumping off from his associations with the influential Source magazine, Harvey brought together over 300 artists from more than 21 countries to perform in London, England over the course of two weeks in August of 1972. Based on the theme of Myth, Magic Madness and Mysticism, he assembled an amazing diversity of performers working in diverse range of audio-visual arts. Encompassing happenings, films, dance, a train ride, and the phantom soft pool table, the focus was on sound -- specifically that of artists who were both composers and performers. Most of the concerts were held at The Roundhouse, a cavernous structure that was formerly a railroad engine house. Now, for the first time in 30 years, these recordings can be heard. This first CD in a series documenting the festival features the complete concert given by legendary free improvising group AMM. Represented here by Eddie Prevost and Lou Gare, they offer up powerful explosions of saxophone and drums punctuated with their famous AMM silences. This is the first time this material is available, aside from two short excerpts were published as the only 7" release on Evan Parker and Derek Bailey's Incus Records (and a very rare and desirable record that has become)." -Forced Exposure

ART BEARS: REVISITED ART BEARS: REVISITED
Price: $25.95
Quantity in Basket: none
As the years passed and technology marched on, Art Bears decided to let other artists to remix the three original albums. On the 3 disks referred to as "REVISITED" in this box, we are treated to how others perceive the importance of the Art Bears' back catalog by their own standards in the current studio world, using the resurrected master tapes as a starting point. In all cases the work is as radical today as it was when the band first offered it up a quarter of a century ago. Features Bob Drake, Stephan Tickmayer, Jon Rose, Christian Marclay Thomas Dimuzio, Musci-Venosta, Lars Pedersen (When), Warrick Swinney (The Kalahari Surfers), Biota, The Residents, Otomo Yoshida, and, well....too many more to mention here. You get the idea. It harkens the Art Bears trilogy into a new era of technology, aesthetic and sound, all of which had yet to be introduced back when the original albums were made. Also on these disks are previously unreleased concert recordings, a reissue of the "Collapse" 45 rpm (from Ralph Records), a newly completed piece by the band aptly called," Rebirth" (which was hitherto a poem in the coveted "Wintersongs" book), "All Hail" from the Recommended Sampler, and the extremely rare live version of "Coda to Man and Boy" from the Cantu recording.

Agitation Free: Last Agitation Free: Last
Price: $17.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"According to me "Last" is one of the most recommended live albums recorded in the history of prog . Performed during two concerts (one in 1973 and the other in 1974), the tracks deliver long improvisational & instrumental pieces, perfectly executed by very talented musicians who really get the feeling and who know how to play together. "Last" is an unforgotten musical experience which leads you in a totally free form rock, developing spacey and dreamy soundscapes, combining excellent guitars duet to experimental 'electronic' arrangements. There's of course similarities to Ashra tempel 'cosmic' and ambitious first releases but it doesn't replace the solid, perpetual jam sessions formidably operated, technically and emotionally superior than "Malecsh" and "Second"!" - Phillipe Blache

Agitation Free was founded 1969 in Berlin and were known for a complex instrumental progressive rock with spacey sounds, a mixture of Popol Vuh and the early Pink Floyd. Yet, the style of Agitation Free was real and one filled with cosmic and ethnic elements and first of all due to the genius inventions and the great talent of its musicians, one played with a lot of electronic, keyboards, two guitars, drums but less vocals. The first LP of Agitation Free was released in 1972 on Vertigo and is back now as an official reissue on CD.

Ahvak: Ahvak Ahvak: Ahvak
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"The Israeli band Ahvak, named after the Hebrew word for "Dust," creates music of dark, ominous and compelling beauty. Ahvak's mesmerizing and electrified version of chamber rock blurs the boundary lines between styles and aligns the band with forward-thinking bands such as Univers Zero, The Science Group, Sotos, Thinking Plague and the 5UUs. Led by two conservatory trained composers/keyboardists and also featuring excellent work on guitar, bass and drums (by Dave Kerman!), the five musicians are joined by their engineer, Udi Koomran, who often extends the music into unique directions by his use of modern computer software, without compromising the integrity of the compositions or the vibrant performances. The resulting CD is a highly sophisticated and expertly produced work, featuring superb compositions performed by highly experienced musicians". -Cuneiform

Angeli, Paolo: Tessuti Angeli, Paolo: Tessuti
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Another extraordinary release by Sardinian virtuoso Paolo Angeli, this time featuring compositions by Fred Frith and Bjork – all played solo in real time (though when you hear it, it's hard to believe it) on his highly customised and extended, electrified, giant Sardinian folk guitar. A tour de force of technique and at the same time highly musical; and there is so much going on here at any given time that it is difficult to relate what your ears tell you to just one Frankenstein instrument. Dense enough that it rewards listening to a few songs at a time, though you could probably also dance to it.

Antheil, George: Dreams, Piano Concerto No. 2 Serenade No.2 Antheil, George: Dreams, Piano Concerto No. 2 Serenade No.2
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"A concert pianist and vanguard composer, George Antheil (1900-1959) became known as the 'Bad Boy of Music.' The ultimate American in Paris, Antheil was an avant-garde provocateur of the first order who made his name composing iconoclastic compositions: the loudest and brashest classical music of his time. But this album gives us three new performances -- two of them world-premiere recordings -- which reveal another, forgotten side of Antheil: the incurable romantic. Written in 1926, after the height of Antheil's radical period, the 'Piano Concerto No. 2' is an experiment in classical form. The work contains the same sudden juxtapositions and abrupt contrasts of mood as his futurist music. But the excesses of his recent ballet mécanique (written for 16 player pianos!) are compensated for by an almost spare, baroque orchestration and motifs that draw on Bach as much as on Stravinsky. In three movements, Antheil employs a more restrained but still exuberant style. The beautifully meditative slow movement is followed by a virtuosic and compelling toccata. Each movement ends on an overtly Bachian cadence, most obvious in the sweetly naive coda of the final movement. The ballet 'Dreams' (1935) had a prior existence in Paris. It was called 'Les Songes,' and Darius Milhaud wrote the original music in 1933, later discarded in favor of Antheil's score. Antheil plays sarcastically with contradictions: waltz vs. march; folk song vs. orchestral romanticism. This is marvelous ballet music, and the unexpected structural and melodic changes keep us on the edge of our seat: amused and entertained. The lack of a formal structure does not hamper Antheil; he seemed to thrive on it, both in this piece, and in many others he wrote. Despite the cut-and-paste exoticism and the predictable thematic material, this music sounds appealingly American -- folksy, populist, and engaging. Antheil's brilliant orchestration makes these works shine. Not much is known about the genesis of the 'Serenade No. 2' (1948). As the work neared completion, Antheil wrote, the 'Serenade' '...is as important, for me, as a new symphony; indeed, it can be played by a major symphony orchestra.' It's a beautifully orchestrated, lush work. Both serenades are in three movements -- the first is for strings alone while the second adds a wind section and a percussionist." -Forced Exposure

Price: $54.95
Quantity in Basket: none
The Revival of George Antheil's 1924 Ballet Méchanique. A film by Ron Frank and Paul D. Lehrman. In the Roaring '20s, George Antheil's raucous piano recitals and futuristic compositions were creating scandals and riots all over Europe. Ten years later, Antheil was back home, broke and forgotten. His magnum opus, the 'Ballet Méchanique,' so technologically ahead of its time that it could never be performed the way we conceived it, was lost. Forty years after the composer's death, as the 20th century ended, it could finally be heard. This film by Ron Frank and Paul D. Lehrman is about George Antheil and his famous controversial piece 'Ballet Mécanique.' This 2 DVD set includes the award-winning documentary shown on PBS plus extended interviews with friends of Antheil featured in the film, the complete premiere concert performance of the original orchestration of 'Ballet Mécanique,' and the 1925 Léger/Murphy film 'Ballet Mécanique' with the newly-realized 16-player-piano version of Antheil's score." Archer, Martin: Heritage and Ringtones Archer, Martin: Heritage and Ringtones
Price: $17.95
Quantity in Basket: none
An uncategorisable CD that moves from the echo of one half-recognisable musical language to another; there is always a sense of melody, though often stretches seem apparently abstract; the structures are always focused and seductive. Great use is made of the harp (Rhodri Davies) and, on two tracks, acoustic guitar (Tim Cole), and of thematic materials, including those of the great Bert Jansch, Duke Ellington, Ann Briggs and Anon. Abstract sound and instrumental performance are dreamily blended. There is also a strong biographical feeling and a sense of seething, sometimes fragmentary recollection held firmly together by a coherent and precise sense of order and careful placement of materials. There is performance and not merely the shifting of waveforms around, retaining a sense of gesture and spontaneity. The CD is as diverse and surprising as it is consistent - in itself a remarkable fact. And as you realise how many opposites and incompatibles are negotiated and accommodated here, the scale of Archer's musical achievement begins to become apparent. There's nothing flashy or fashionable, just the quiet sense of a new road taken and a job well done. The result is personal and novel, and to these ears very substantial. A great record.

Ayler,Albert: Slug's Saloon (Double Compact Disc Set ) Ayler,Albert: Slug's Saloon (Double Compact Disc Set )
Price: $27.00
Quantity in Basket: none
This is a different version than what you may know: It's the complete live recording of Albert Ayler's May 1, 1966 performance at Slug's Saloon. (Please note that other recent reissues of this date, by Fruit Tree and Lone Hill, are neither authorized by the Ayler Estate, nor - in the case of the latter - musically complete). This two-disc set features fresh takes on old favorites such as "Ghosts" and "Bells," finding the seasoned quintet in stellar form, marching its way through Ayler's distinctive brand of major triad melodic harmony to the greatest heights of individual expression and group improvisation. One of the giants of free jazz, Albert Ayler was also one of the most controversial. His huge tone and wide vibrato were difficult to ignore, and his 1966 group sounded like a runaway New Orleans brass band from 1910.

  Bailey, Derek: Carpal Tunnel
Price: $15.99
Quantity in Basket: none
"Quite literally one of the most original and influential guitarists on the planet, Derek Bailey has completely revolutionized the language of guitar music in the twentieth century. His work has been championed by almost every cutting edge guitarist: Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, Buckethead, Jerry Garcia, but his influence reaches far far beyond the insular world of guitar freaks, to classical composers such as Brian Ferneyhough and Karlheinz Stockhausen, creative musicians Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Leo Smith, jazz players Dave Holland, Steve Lacy and Milford Graves, rock bands Sonic Youth, Fantomas and so many more. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, his first solo recording since the best selling Ballads album of 2003, finds Derek again in a wistful romantic mood, and these three musings for solo guitar are some of his most soulful and emotional documents ever. Essential late recordings by a man who has helped improvisation change the world". -Tzadik

Three dense movements (25.36 total) for Orchestra (BBC Symphony). Remarkable in that the orchestra is organised like a small ensemble, with a complexity and clarity of organisation and timbre that is surprising, even extraordinary. Barrett, Syd: Barrett Barrett, Syd: Barrett
Price: $18.00
Quantity in Basket: none
"UK version (with bonus tracks not found on the domestic US version), of the 2nd Syd Barrett solo album. Originally released in November 1970 on Harvest. Barrett was the second and final studio album of new material released by former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett. 'Shortly after releasing his first album, The Madcap Laughs, Barrett appeared on John Peel's Top Gear radio show where he presented only one song from the newly released album. Two days later, he began working on his second album in the Abbey Road Studios, this time with Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Rick Wright as producers and musicians. The main aim for the Barrett sessions was to give Syd the structure and focus many felt was missing during the long and unwieldy sessions for The Madcap Laughs. Thus, the sessions were more efficiently run -- with much unreleased material recorded -- and the album was finished in far less time than it took to complete The Madcap Laughs. In addition, with the unpredictability and at times despairing nature of Madcap greatly decreased, the rigid format of the new sessions ended up giving Barrett a less inventive flavor, as a result. Nonetheless, Barrett does indeed have some memorable songs, least of all 'Baby Lemonade,' 'Dominoes' and 'Gigolo Aunt,' all of which are as well known to Barrett fans as 'See Emily Play' and 'Astronomy Domine.' Although not generally as highly regarded as The Madcap Laughs, Barrett -- of which, the cover was painted by Syd himself -- is still a much-prized recording from its maker. Includes seven bonus tracks including: 'Baby Lemonade (Take 1),' 'Waving My Arms In The Air (Take 1),' 'I Never Lied To You (Take 1),' 'Love Song (Take 1),' 'Dominoes (Take 1),' 'Dominoes (Take 2),' 'It Is Obvious (Take 2).'" -Forced Exposure

Barrett, Syd: The Madcap Laughs Barrett, Syd: The Madcap Laughs
Price: $18.50
Quantity in Basket: none
"UK version (with bonus tracks not found on the domestic US version), of the first Syd Barrett solo album. Originally released on Harvest in January 1970. 'During February 1968, Dave Gilmour had been drafted into The Pink Floyd and for a brief time they existed as a 5-piece. Soon, however, rumours circulated that Syd Barrett would be taking on a 'Brian Wilson' role, writing and recording material 'behind the scenes.' But by April it was clear that he had been ousted completely. Within a month of his axing, Barrett was back in Abbey Road. With his manager Pete Jenner as producer, Barrett began his solo career. Blending angular, riveting guitar-work and jaunty improvisation with more fragile and enchanting pieces, Barrett composed in a suitably elegiac fashion. Later in the recording process, Gilmour and Roger Waters would aid in co-production, shepherding Barrett through many takes and re-takes of what finally gelled as his most skilled and coherent solo record. Includes six bonus tracks including 'Octopus (Takes 1&2)', 'It's No Good Trying (Take 5)', 'Love You (Take 1)', 'Love You (Take 3)', 'She Took A Long Cold Look At Me (Take 4)', Golden Hair (Take 5)'." -Forced Exposure

"Volume 14 in INA GRM's continuing documentation of Francois Bayle's complete works. Featuring two long pieces: "Camera Oscura" (1976) & "Espaces Inhabitables" (1967). "Camera Oscura" is a literal 39 minute-minute tour de force of Bayle's stereophonic fabric, the perfect "ping", so to speak: "At first a rhythmic maze, mirrors-form that look more-or-less alike, that are assembled, woven, fuged. Then we find ourselves thrown into windings and crystallised sonorities, in which the lines would be lost if they were not supported by low layers, from plateau to plateau, seemingly leading to a muter and muter deep, to the bottom of an abyss that heat and light would reach (maybe), in extremis. But for the ear, those constructions in sequence, processes, stretching, extensions, transpositions, thickenings, harmonisation, spatialisation, reverberations and dissipation are only forms and impressions left on the memory, in view of a joy of a multidimensional, fulfilled hearing." -Forced Exposure

Bayle, Francois: Jeita Bayle, Francois: Jeita
Price: $20.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"Francois Bayle, born in Madagascar 1932, under most unusual circumstances found himself in Lebanon during January, 1969. Having been active director of the GRM since 1966 he was asked by Lebanese Artist and Sculptor Ghassan Klink to help celebrate the opening of the Grand Upper Gallery of the Jeita Grotto composed of two immense caverns. The lower galleries, discovered in 1836 and opened to the public in 1958, are filled with a vast subterranean river with limited access by boat. The upper galleries, discovered in August 1958 by Lebanese speleologists led by Sami Karkabe, required a hazardous climb to 650 meters above the entrance of the underground river. After a suitable entry was constructed -- this level was also opened for public access in January 1969. Though a 120-meter-long concrete tunnel does little to prepare you for the surprising world beyond. Formed several million years before the lower caverns, this section shows what the entire cave system was like before geological conditions displaced the subterranean river to its present level. Few caverns in the world approach the astounding wealth or the extent of those of Jeita. In these caves and galleries, the action of water and time has created cathedral-like vaults, mineral-stained stalactites and limestone roots supporting the wooded hills of Mount Lebanon. The perfect setting for an ELECTRONIC CONCERT-- of course. According to Karlheinz Stockhausen who also performed at this same location in November 1969 -- 'We had to lay a mile-long cable through the cave to reach the outside' and 'We had a hard time getting shortwaves there.' (they chose to perform 'Kurzwellen' ??) The first track on this CD, 'Jeita ou murmure des eaux', was originally released as an LP on the Philips Prospective 21st Century Silver Series in 1970. It is a 'remix' of sorts from recordings Bayle made within the Jeita cave system including excerpts of the actual concert. Thoroughly alchemical -- these 17 studies reinforce a main principle guiding much of the spirit of Musique concrete -- the sound object. What better way to appreciate sound in its original state -- a presence in the utter timelessness of a cave unfolding without regard to the changing external world. The second track 'L'infini du bruit' was recorded in the 80's and is previously unpublished. Audio graphite comes to mind. The last track 'Jeita -- Retour' is from 1985 and is a reworking of the original in recognition of the closing of the Jeita cave system due to the Lebanese war (it has since been reopened)." -Ashlie Taylor.

Price: $16.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"This is the seventh volume in the Acousmatrix series. In 1955, Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna founded a Studio di Fonologia at a Milan radio station; it was the first electronic music studio in Italy. Berio became very active there, organizing concerts and also publishing a new music journal, both under the name Incontri Musicali. Berio explored the frontiers of sound, particularly vocal sound, thanks to his association with Cathy Berberian. She was willing and able to produce a remarkable variety of extended techniques with her voice, which she did with the utmost musicianship. Three pieces: 'Momenti,' 'Thema-Omaggio a Joyce' and 'Visage.' Bruno Maderna's celebrity in America was so short-lived that by 2004, Maderna's name was largely forgotten there, but not so in Europe, where he is yet regarded as one of the giants of post-war modernism. Two pieces: 'Le Rire' and 'Invenzione su una voce' feature Cathy Berberian." -Forced Exposure

This release is an exciting stylistic departure; on this CD the band are essentially a miniature 9 piece orchestra, employing guitar, trumpet, soprano, alto & baritone sax, alto clarinet, violin, cello, cymbalom, bass & percussion. Like a more intense/dissonant version of Art Zoyd circa Generations Sans Futur". -Cuneiform

Blast: Stringy Rugs Blast: Stringy Rugs
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"A brilliant Dutch avant/rock band. They use electric guitars, alto/soprano sax, alto/bass clarinet, baritone sax, bass, drums [by the amazingly brilliant David Kerman] & vocals. They combine a very unique & recognizable skewed rhythmic base (influenced by Capt. Beefheart) with angular & intricate horn & guitar charts ala Henry Cow and Doctor Nerve. About 1/4th has vocals, while the bulk is instrumental. The music is tough-edged & aggressive. This album adds scored parts for a number of guests on tuned percussion, brass & more. All must be heard to be believed; these are great discs of intensely complicated, rehearsal-intensive RIO-style rock. 'I never got to see Henry Cow, but now that I've seen Blast, it doesn't matter.' -Bill Ellsworth. 'tight, complex, angular, polyrhythmic, verging-on-brilliant Dadist chamber rock...indescribably powerful & compelling...this is a must' -Alternative Press". -Cuneiform

Price: $14.95

Enregistré au 23e Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville le 21 mai 2006. "Borbetomagus and Hijokaidan sharing the stage. Noise music fans are getting goosebumps reading those words. Others, well... others should be scared, very scared! Two monster proponents of noise aesthetics, representing two continents whose cultures have often been described as incompatible and yet meet in the celebration of noise. Purifying noise annihilating nationalities and differences. Noise inviting us to a fabulous sonic orgy where energy will reign over precision of execution, where violence is sublimated through strings, reeds and skins, where artistic research consists in destroying over and over what one has managed to build, in order to reinvent it. Two sax players, two guitar players, an electronics player, a singer and a drummer, all working hard to convince you that noise can be a lot more than noise, but exists mostly for making some noise!" --François Couture

Brainticket: Cottonwoodhill Brainticket: Cottonwoodhill
Price: $18.00
Quantity in Basket: none
""Reissue of one of the essential early 70s psychedelic freak-out albums, first issued by the Hallelujah label in Switzerland in 1971. Licensed to German Bellaphone soon thereafter, this is generally considered one of the peak Krautrock experiences, despite its Swiss origins. Bellaphone did a poor quality CD issue in 1989, and there was also a bootleg version on 'Bellgro' -- both of those are long o/p. This new CD, legitimately reissued by the original Swiss manufacturer -- Phonag Records, offers improved sound & reproduces the fantastic swirl cover. At this point in time, Brainticket were made up of: Joel Vandroogenbroeck (organ, flute), Ron Bryer (guitar), Werni Frohlich (bass), Coismo Lampis (drums), Wolfgang Paap (tabla), Dawn Muir (voice) & Hellmuth Kolbe (potentiometers, generators and soundeffects). This is their first album (sometimes referred to as 'self-title') and is quite different and more radical than anything else in their discography. It features an outlandish churning groove of a sound (vaguely comparable to Can or Funkadelic at their most tweaked), is deeply immersed in LSD mythology and is littered with electronic effects and collage-like elements leading towards the cover's warning: 'Listen to the first recordings of this LSD/Hashish/Fixy/Jointy sound. Take a trip to your inner light. See the hallucinations of reality rise out of the groove. You've got your Brainticket now!' -Forced Exposure

Camberwell Now: All's Well Camberwell Now: All's Well
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
This definitive edition collects the entire released output of Camberwell Now (two EPs and an LP), newly re-mastered by the band and repackaged with full notes, lyrics, additional photographs and artwork. Chronologically, Camberwell Now immediately succeeded This Heat, Charles Hayward continuing to work with This Heat's last bassist Trefor Goronwy, and the two of them joining forces with Stephen Rickard who, for the new band, designed his unique 'cassette switchboard', a kind of proto-sampler - though that's not the half of it (Steve's article fully explaining the device is reprinted in the new, expanded booklet that comes with the CD).

Musically, Camberwell both followed and departed from the style of This Heat. Formally and gesturally there are common elements, but there is far greater transparency and the sound palette is quite different: the music is more placed than grown, as the slow accumulation and evolution of material in This Heat gives way to a more immediate and orderly development of the material in Camberwell Now. The songs - nostalgic, scary, and quietly desperate - peer into the future to find harbour but confront only fragments of ruin.

Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath: Bremen To Bridgwater Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath: Bremen To Bridgwater
Price: $20.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"South African pianist and composer Chris McGregor led racially mixed Blue Notes in South Africa in the early 1960's. But touring and performing proved difficult, and tiring of continuous government harassment, in 1964 McGregor and the band's core members left their South African homeland. They settled in London in 1966 where they befriended many in the city's emerging avant-garde jazz community and made a huge impact on London's jazz scene. He founded the big-band Brotherhood of Breath in 1970. The Brotherhood was essentially The Blue Notes augmented by musicians of the English avant-garde jazz community. Combining the rhythms of African music with those of American big-band jazz and the free playing of British improv, it produced 'one of the most vital and life-affirming big-band jazz ever played by anyone, anywhere.' (BBCi). The Brotherhood released only a handful of recordings in their lifetime, and the band was rather forgotten, until Cuneiform released Travelling Somewhere in 2001, a 1973 radio broadcast, in 2001, which gained rave reviews. This release, Bremen to Bridgewater, contains two CDs of previously unreleased live recordings made in Germany and England during two very different periods of the band's career. The German radio recordings were made on June 20th, 1971 at Lila Uele, a well known jazz club in Bremen. The English recordings were made at the Bridgewater Arts Center, during two tours that the band made with different lineups in February and November of 1975, and feature some of the very last recordings of trumpeter Mongezi Feza, who died in December of that year. The band's lineups on these recordings are a veritable who's who of British free jazz, and include Harry Beckett, Marc Charig, Elton Dean, Nick Evans, Harry Miller, Louis Moholo, Mike Osborne, Evan Parker, Dudu Pukwana, Alan Skidmore, Gary Windo and others. In addition to the stunning music, this CD features a 12 page booklet with rare and beautiful photos and detailed liner notes by Francesco Martinelli". -Cuneiform

Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath: Travelling Somewhere Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath: Travelling Somewhere
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"South African born and raised pianist/bandleader Chris McGregor formed the racially mixed Blue Notes in the early 1960's, touring and trying to get by in extremely difficult political circumstances as best they could. By 1964, facing continuous government harassment, Chris & the Blue Notes fled their South African homeland, finally settling in London in 1966. They made a huge impact on London's jazz scene and befriended many in London's emerging avant-garde jazz community. By 1969, the Blue Notes had drifted apart. Not too long afterwards, Chris formed The Brotherhood Of Breath, which was essentially the Blue Notes, augmented by a large number of the friends that they had made in the British jazz community. The band toured constantly during their peak years of 1971-74, but they only released 3 albums in their lifetime. Traveling Somewhere was recorded at a well known jazz club in Bremen, Germany on January 19th, 1973 for radio broadcast, and is by far the best recorded live document of the Brotherhood. The 12 piece band is a who's who of many of the big names of British free jazz of the early/mid 1970's: Harry Beckett, Mark Charig & Mongezi Feza (trumpets), Nick Evans & Malcolm Griffiths (trombones), Mike Osborne, Evan Parker, Dudu Pukwana & Gary Windo (saxes), Chris McGregor (piano), Harry Miller (double bass) and Louis Moholo (drums). Called 'One of the truly legendary modern jazz big bands' by The Penguin Guide To Jazz On CD, Traveling Somewhere adds to the band's still growing legacy, and will bring their music to a new generation of fans." -Cuneiform

  Crispell, Marilyn (Trio): Storyteller
Price: $15.99
Quantity in Basket: none
"Seven years after the unprecedented ECM debut, Nothing Ever Was, Anyway, and three years after the stellar Amaryllis, pianist Marilyn Crispell gives listeners another trip down her ever deepening cavern of mystery and imagination. Teamed once again with drummer and composer Paul Motian and new bassist Mark Helias, Crispell builds an even sturdier tension bridge between her increasing focus on harmonic and melodic interplay and dynamic intensity. The polarities are the immediate way into this set, which is so full of ambiguities and spectral presences one could say it is haunted. Crispell's physicality is held in check for most of the proceedings here, but it is ever present. There is a tautness to these performances that is held firmly by the steady, sinewy rhythmic direction of Helias (who contributed two fine tunes to this set). Crispell wrote three pieces for this recording, all of them signifying a direction the ensemble travels in a labyrinthine fashion for a time. These are underscored and elaborated upon in her choice of six of Motian's tunes covering some 30 years. In fact, the title track, which feels like a Crispell signature, was composed by Motian. What sets Storyteller apart from most recordings out there is its depth of feeling and the unveiled manner in which it is displayed... another triumph for Crispell". -Thom Jurek, AMG

Price: $13.95

"University of Errors is led by guitarist, vocalist, and pataphysical icon Daevid Allen. Daevid was one of the founding members of The Soft Machine (and later the founder of Gong), but he left the Softs in August, 1967, and there are only a handful of recordings and demos of his tenure with the band. Allen launched his US-based band, University of Errors, over thirty years, numerous musical escapades and multiple continents later. It is a remake of Soft Machine?s first music: their repertoire from the days when Allen was in, and recorded with, the band whose existence he sparked. On Jet Propelled Photographs, University of Errors revives, re-informs, and reinvents Soft Machine's psychedelic rock and pop of the era, kicking it into the 21st century and resulting in a sound that is entirely new! 'Thanks for the University of Errors. Great BAND!...lovely record.' - Robert Wyatt. 'Just got the Jet Propelled Photographs. I like it. Good energetic versions of the songs and Daevid is singing well.' - Hugh Hopper". -Cuneiform

Price: $9.00

"Death Ambient teams three of the world's most exciting improvisers in a fascinating album that blurs styles and smashes genres in a dark world of unusual sounds and unorthodox techniques. Bassist Kato Hideki was an original member of Ground Zero, has recorded with his own group Bass Army, and is a frequent collaborator with Tenko, Haino Keiji and Zeena Parkins among others. Ikue Mori has developed a personal and innovative technique of playing samplers triggered by adapted drum machines. A member of the legendary No-Wave trio DNA (with Arto Lindsay), Mori has recorded with Death Praxis (with Tenko), Vibraslaps (with Catherine Jauniaux), Ursa's Door (with Zeena Parkins) and many others. Fred Frith is one of the most important and influential guitarists in rock and improvisational music of the past three decades. He was a founding member of Henry Cow and the Art Bears in the early '70s, and played with Skeleton Crew, Curlew, Cassiber, Massacre, Material, the Golden Palominos, French Frith Kaiser & Thompson, Naked City, The Residents, John Zorn, Rene Lussier, and Derek Bailey, among others". -Tzadik

Price: $15.95

What Day Is It ? is the re-issue of Bob's very first solo disc (originally self-manufactured in art packaging – here tho, professionally packaged for mass market sales). It already exhibits Bob's characteristic traits: golden fingers, hi-wire vocals, eyebrow-raising country-picking, loose-but-right-in-the-pocket drums, eccentric chord inversions, and a bass-guitar sound to die for. Sitting happily with the fantasy 'Yes' Euro-progressive surface is the rather more substantial depth of a bluegrass and rooted-rock American culture; an almost unique combination and one hard to imitate (or even imagine, until you hear Bob do it). But then, Bob has always marched to the beat of a different drummer, manifestly careless of the fashion or of the easier, more superficial aspects of the music he has absorbed.

What impact this cheeky use of modern technology has had on the band, their fans and the music industry is portrayed in this documentary Einstürzende Neubauten - On Tour With Neubauten.Org by Danielle De Picciotto. Danielle De Picciotto, an American artist living in Berlin since the fall of the wall, has influenced Berlin's cultural scene since 1985 in many ways as the co-innovator of the Love Parade, the Ocean Club with Gudrun Gut and Kunst oder König, the club-cultural exhibition series presenting Berlin's creative cross-culture internationally. Also an active member of Berlin's music scene (former singer of the Space Cowboys) she has known Einstürzende Neubauten personally for almost twenty years, following their development with interest. After becoming a member of their new project Neubauten.org, in 2003 she was asked to document the ensuing tour in 2004 by Blixa Bargeld, singer of the band, to provide material for future concert documentaries. Besides filming every show, she interviewed countless "supporters" worldwide, ending up with this documentary -- a courageous example of how following an individual, courageous path can change people's lives worldwide. Includes fascinating bonus material such as: "Die Intonatore," a short film from the supporter "Dihcar and Ste van Holm," a "Making Of" interview with Alexander Hacke, a Blixa Bargeld live track, as well as two slideshows. NTSC format DVD, 4:3, DVD 9, stereo, digipack. Running time: 90 mins." -Forced Exposure

"English jazz saxophone legend Elton Dean has been in the public eye for over 30 years, & has played in numerous acclaimed groups over the years, including the Keith Tippett Group, Soft Machine and many others. In addition to the original album, we have added 25' of never heard bonus material, recorded live in 1972. "Etron Fou were one of the premier French avant/progressive bands from 1974-1986, & a founding member of R.I.O. This reissues the Etron's 1st album, from early 1977. This is certainly their most dada/out album, and I have a real soft spot for it in my heart, but I wouldn't recommend you start here unless your interest is more in general French craziness than in the superb musicality that came later. Excellent packaging with rare photos and great sound". -Cuneiform

Price: $13.95

"Among the many great idiosyncratic talents of American music in the 20th century, Captain Beefheart would certainly figure prominently on any list. '...once you get past the audacious unfamiliarity of (his work), you realize that this was not just some big improvised mess, but in fact the most tightly composed polyrhythmic rock 'n' roll ever written' -Matt Groening (The Simpsons). Fast 'N' Bulbous is a Captain Beefheart tribute project, led by two innovators of New York's avant music scene: Gary Lucas, who was guitarist for Captain Beefheart's Magic Band in its latter years and saxist and arranger Phillip Johnston. Their mission statement: 'The idea is to use the compositions of Don Van Vliet as a vehicle for improvisation and arranging. The band contains a crew of seasoned improvisers from both the worlds of avant-garde jazz and rock, who render the music as both a tribute and a creative adventure in improvising. We use the horn section to take the place of the vocals, as well as transmute this guitar-based music into ensemble interplay, between horns and guitar and rhythm section. They energetically revive the spirit and sound of The Magic Band, while adding a big healthy dollop of themselves to it and making it their own, cartwheeling through tunes that are as gutsy as they are cerebral, and playing this wonderful repertoire with verve and soul. A must for any fan of this music.' 'Fast 'n' Bulbous proved that Beefheart's songs deserve to be played in his absence and are, for all their knotty logic, quite playable...Johnston's brass scores hit the R&B meat and twisted swing that Beefheart embedded in spidery guitars... Lucas on searing bottleneck guitar celebrated the rock in Beefheart's extremes' -David Fricke/Rolling Stone". -Cuneiform

"Live at the Flux New Music Festival in Edinburgh. Three weeks of festival, theatre, pantomime, experimental arts and music. In amongst these, Faust: A legend for the connoisseur, with constantly changing sound experiments over the past 25 years. Faust mixes industrial noise with tattered sounds, jazzy harmonies and rock rhythms. Unfettered and minimalist. A concert at a venue resembling a low, hot cave. There is a huge metal sheet in front of the stage beyond the reach of the audience. Guardian: '... an alarming, emotionally exhausting and strangely uplifting ritual and probably the most intense live theatre of the Edinburgh Fringe. Worth selling your soul for, in fact!' Faust: Freispiel Faust: Freispiel
Price: $15.99
Quantity in Basket: none
"Faust, the legendary Krautrock band, is back again In their 31st year they are releasing a remix album, proving once again their timeless importance to the international music scene. This album is a collection of remixes of most tracks from Faust´s spectacular masterpiece Ravvivando, released in 1999. Take your time listening to it, and you will get lost in these amazing soundscapes and more dancefloor-tracks of Freispiel. As you might know, musical borders and limits do not exist in the fantastic sound world of Faust. The knowledge about this first Faust-principle was a great challenge for the participating artists of Freispiel. The wide diversity of sounds spans from The Resident's work to the infectious dance grooves by the Sofa Surfers and Soft Cell to deconstructed versions by people like Funkstoerung and Howie B. You will also fall in love with the final track the Canadian band Dead Voices On Air (who had been involved with the Can-solo-projects) made of the Faust-song 'Du weißt schon'. Freispielshows Faust in a complete new framework and is a must for any serious record collector and the urban club-scene of many open-minded people. Wherever you go, in the tube, in the cafe, on the street under water...you will hear the sound of Faust since all sound is potential music, music like Faust´s, limitless.. So the unlimited world around us is both the laboratory and the stage for this outstanding German band." -Forced Exposure

CAVEAT IN NORTH AMERICA: THIS DVD IS PAL REGION ZERO. IT WILL PLAY ON YOUR COMPUTER, AND SHOULD PLAY IN YOUR DVD PLAYER, BUT MAY NOT PLAY ON OLDER MODEL DVD PLAYERS. WE OFFER A MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE, SHOULD YOU EXPERIENCE ANY PROBLEMS. At last, a well made film that captures the intensity, caprice ,craziness and visionary beauty of Faust's late 90s performances, when, for a moment the core members of the original band were temporarily reconciled. Professionally filmed at the legendary 1996 Faust Garage concert, this release fills in what has until now been sorely missing from the record:? the sheer physicality of Faust's performances, the litter of scrap, cement mixers, hay blowing machines, angle grinders and instruments that form their workplace (shared here with sculptress Insa Winkler, toiling away on sheet steel with an oxy-acetylene welder throughout the show). In the middle of the stage hangs a battery of drums, chunks of wood and metal, mounted on a large, open frame, and around it bassist Jean- Herve Peron and drummer Zappi Diermier prowl and play in constant motion. Peron takes time out to strip and fling buckets of paint at a huge white wall of blank LP covers; Zappi attacks his kit with sticks like tree trunks. Meanwhile, organist Jochen Irmler sits placidly in the wreckage, smiling the same smile whether he is unleashing the hounds of hell or underpinning the chaos with meditative drifting pitches. This show, like all their shows during this period, is a tempest of chaos, disruption and moment to moment action. Sparks fly, machines rattle, the room fills with smoke, and eventually we all wind up on the street as the band stumbles out, and the fire engines arrive. Classic. The DVD also includes ?Struktur? - an exclusive 50 minute behind-the-scenes document shot by the late Arthur Howes, and a bonus performance of Flashback Caruso.

"Morton Feldman was born in New York on January 12, 1926. In 1949 the most significant meeting up to that time took place - Feldman met John Cage, commencing an artistic association of crucial importance to music in America in the 1950s. Cage was instrumental in encouraging Feldman to have confidence in his instincts, which resulted in totally intuitive compositions. He never worked with any systems that anyone has been able to identify, working from moment to moment, from one sound to the next. His friends during the 1950s in New York included the composers Earle Brown and Christian Wolff; painters Mark Rothko, Philip Guston, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock and Robert Rauschenberg; and pianist David Tudor. He is today considered as one of the most important composers of the century". -Sub Rosa

Feliu I Joan Albert: Feliu I Joan Albert Feliu I Joan Albert: Feliu I Joan Albert
Price: $16.95

"Reissue of the sole album of this Catalan duo, Feliu Gasull (Spanish guitar) and Joan Albert Amargós (piano), both cousins. Post-Musica Urbana, originally released by Edigsa in 1977 and never reissued before. Recommended for lovers of Toti Soler, Musica Urbana and progressive in general. "After the classic Musica Urbana, here is my other favourite Spanish release from the late '70s, featuring Joan Albert Amargos, Musica Urbana's keyboard player and main composer, who here plays mostly acoustic and some electric piano, and the remarkable acoustic guitarist Feliu Gusul. This is pure music; breathtakingly executed (and exquisitely recorded, you can even hear the sharp intake of breath sometimes as Feliu negotiates some impossible fingering). Occasionally other electric instruments, percussion, woodwinds are added. This has all the imagination and energy of '60s jazz, though speaking a completely different musical language; very Spanish, wholly original. A classic." -- Chris Cutler."

Ferrari, Luc: Archives Sauvees Ferrari, Luc: Archives Sauvees
Price: $16.88
Quantity in Basket: none
"Luc Ferrari is one of the most legendary musical figures of the twentieth century, whose work and aesthetic continue to influence several generations of contemporary composers. Among the founders and pioneers of the 'Groupe de Recherche Musicale', he is recognized to be alongside P. Schaeffer and P. Henry, one of the great masters of concrete music. He is also among the first to influence the 'musique concrète' with elements from other fields of electronic and acoustic music. Educated by Honegger and Messiaen, some steps, as an example the research work in Darmstadt or in Colony or the crucial meeting with Varèse, remain however fundamental. From Varèse, above all, Ferrari learned a fundamental lesson in his search: to consider and to accept the sounds 'for themselves'. The sounds must retain their own original identity, as an abstract quality. This has then been inserted in works in which the sound folds towards a form of narrative, and towards something, eventually, that has been called 'an imaginary musical story'. In this 'story' voices, sounds, orchestral sound, magnetic tape reach levels of extraordinary elaboration and effectiveness. Besides his work in the electronic and electro-acoustic area, Ferrari has composed instrumental music, ranging from solo for pianoforte, to works for orchestra that have obtained wide recognition. We also cannot forget his works for radio and television. As some have suggested, Luc Ferrari among many 'excellent' researchers holds an important position, because of his peculiar training, not academic, often ironic, that he declares to be characterized by 'intelligence, sensuality, extreme sonorous realism, not serious analytic ability, attention to social and the love for the good kitchen'. With recent publications with some labels (Tzadik by J.Zorn or Blue Chopsticks by D. Grubbs) L. Ferrrari is enjoying a deserved 'rebirth'). In the Milan concert L. Ferrari performed with Erikm, one of the most interesting musicians to work with new technologies." -Forced Exposure

Ferrari, Luc: Cellule Ferrari, Luc: Cellule
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Irreverent, psychosexual and always fascinating, Ferrari's work manifests itself in texts, instrumental textures, electroacoustic compositions, reportings, films, theatre, etc. It is an honor for Tzadik to release two of his most important works from the 1970s, recorded under the supervision of the composer himself. 'Place des Abbesses,' the first electro acoustic portrait work realized at his home studio in Paris, 1977, is an evocative portrait of a small square between The Sacred Heart of God and Saints and the Pigalle of licentiousness and sex, two familiar Ferrari obsessions. 'Cellule 75' is an explosive, dynamic work for piano, percussion and tape, balancing improvisational spontaneity with the more exacting writing of classical forms.

Ferrari, Luc: Son Memorise' Ferrari, Luc: Son Memorise'
Price: $14.95

"This is the second of three Sub Rosa releases of instrumental works by this important artist. Luc Ferrari is considered one of the most legendary musical figures of the twentieth century, whose work and aesthetic continues to influence several generations of contemporary composers. Director of the Groupe de Recherche Musicales which he established with Pierre Schaeffer in Paris from 1958-1966, he is also one of the masters of musique concrète who influenced and expanded the genre with electro-acoustic instrumentation. Right from the start, the idea had been to release three very different CDs: one hörspiel, one of concrete music (new and older pieces) and one CD of instrumental works. Les Anecdotiques was the first step: a vast sound-film of more than an hour that explores in 15 steps the intensity of re-composed sounds from his continual travel around the world, with electronic additional structures. This album is the second step -- one that offers a retrospective -- the previously unreleased 'Promenade Symphonique dans un Paysage Musical' from 1976-78, the final 'Presque Rien #4' and a fresh reflection dating from the last months of 2002, 'Saliceburry Cocktail,' a large-scale composition exploring the idea of hideout, scrambled listening -- a tortuous entanglement of concrète and electronic. The forthcoming third and final release will be three recent instrumental compositions for electronics, piano and viola which were recorded under Luc's supervision -- the last works he ever recorded, as he passed away in August 2005". -Forced Exposure

Standouts include the acid fried 13th Floor Elevators-ish 'Sky Turned Red' and the 15 plus minute lazy zen epic hum and strum album closer, 'Blue Sky, Highway and Tyme'. Flynt, Henry: Graduation And Other New Country And Blues Music Flynt, Henry: Graduation And Other New Country And Blues Music
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Henry Flynt - philosopher, student of Pran Nath, a central figure in the early propaganda actions of the George Maciunas led Fluxus activities in the early 60s, four time sit in performer with the Velvet Underground, author of Blueprint For a Higher Civilization and various spirited broadsides against Stockhausen, 12 tone music, and the cultural dominion of European art -- presents us with Graduation some 21 years after its originally scheduled (and scrapped) release. Graduation is the culmination of several years of solo exploration and chance ensemble opportunities to realize his own personal vision of an avant-hillbilly American ethnic music cast out of the mixed up mold of Indian classical, bluegrass, funk, blues, and psychedelia. The result is a perfectly realized trucking and trancing outsider sound world. From the alternately twisted and comical political anthem of the opening title track, Pran Nath influenced vocal stylings, to the winsome hillbilly, cowboy raga, steel city boogie on the succeeding 6 group instrumentals, it is only too clear that Graduation has as much to do with classic southern jam rock as it does with the minimalism of downtown New York drone luminary, and Flynt ally, La Monte Young. The record takes a sudden turn on the album closer with the nearly 20 minute illuminatory audio program Celestial Power, an elemental, laid back head trip comprised of oscillating vibrato guitar churns that instantly monopolize your ears and spirit and bring you to a natural high. The nearly 80 minute collection was remastered from the original tapes, and features two classic photos of Flynt by the acclaimed photographer Peter Moore and updated track notes by Flynt."

Gentle Giant: GG AT THE GG Gentle Giant: GG AT THE GG
Price: $21.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Filmed at Golders Green Hippodrome, Jan. 5th, 1978
BBC Broadcast Jan. 21st, 1978

OK, I'm a sucker for this band's later period, when they were loud & rambunctious, and turned their backs on the pretentious aspects of early 70's Progressive Rock. This is the best sounding, best filmed, and best edited Gentle Giant concert available to date. They do play a lot of their earlier, contrapuntal stuff (which should thrill their long-standing fan base), but they approach it more like The Yardbirds wailing out "Train Kept A-Rollin" than one might imagine. The tempos kick as the band works up a sweat, and gives us a glimpse of where Rock 'N Roll should have gone in the 80's. After the concert we're treated to 6 Gentle Giant "rock videos" : Interview, I Lost My Head and Give it Back - plus 3 others from "Giant For A Day". Until now, these were legendary films that had hardly seen the light of day.

There are 2 additional live videos from 1974 on disc 1: "Excerpts From Octopus" (from The Old Grey Whistle Test, April 1976, which is of good quality, though not quite up to par with the main concert footage), and some super-8, hand held footage from the "In A Glass House" era . The latter doesn't do the music justice, but the band is well-known these days (26 years after their demise) as an organization that will give the public their due money's worth, warts and all. If you're a fan, you'll probably enjoy this addition, as it can have you reminiscing about a time when it was cool to be freaky - before the real sickness and schlock set in to Rock 'N Roll. Also on the first disc: Two galleries of Gentle Giant still photos from guitarist Gary Green's private collection.

Disc 2 is the audio of the Golders Green concert footage and is, to my ears, an improvement upon the previously released CD form, "Gentle Giant In Concert". This was the band's 2nd genuine live album, posthumously released in the 90's , now out-of-print.

I suppose this set could be an embarrassment of riches for some, and a guilty pleasure for others. For me it's both: To regain my composure, and get over the compunction of enjoying it so thoroughly after the first sitting, I had merely to remember where I'd come from.

Price: $25.95
Quantity in Basket: none
A long and extraordinarily fruitful partnership started here - continuing through the Sogennantes Linksradikales Blasorchester - where Alfred and Heiner picked up Christoph Anders, the three of whom then went on to co-found Cassiber, with Chris Cutler. A critical success in its own time, this duo recorded two more CDs before parting company, each more musically open than its predecessor. These first two sorties are a kind of jazz-inflected, punk-inflected, highly spirited and imaginative – series of adapted Hanns Eisler compositions - as well as some original pieces by the duo itself, who between them cover a lot of instruments, and combinations of instruments, and – ah youth – are never less than hurling themselves into their performances. Heiner went on, after Cassiber, to become one of Germany's leading music-theatre writer and directors, as well as composing for the ensemble modern, orchestras and opera companies (he had an orchestra premiere to mark the opening of the Festival Hall complex in London on July 12th). Alfred went on to form several other bands, including Gestalt et Jive before relocating to Seoul in Korea, where he now lives and works. He is currently part of Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Orchestra. Both original LPs have been re-mastered for this release by Bob Drake.

To celebrate Sofia Gubaidulina's 75th birthday, Wergo ofers this new CD of the composer's chamber music. Joining Julius Berger and Stefan Hussong, two well-known interpreters of new music, are Sofia Gubaidulina and her colleague, Viktor Suslin. In Am Rande des Abgrunds Gubaidulina and Suslin play aquaphones -- instruments which resemble water-filled censers with strange decorations. Their sound is rich in overtones and quite unusual, and contrasts sharply with the shimmering sound of the strings. These unusual instruments are an expression of the composer's eagerness to experiment, actively and consciously grappling with the sound worlds of the cultures of Africa and East Asia. --Forced Exposure

"Guigou is one of rock's great unsung drummers, performing with Volapuk and Etron Fou for many years. This album grew out of a workshop Guigou held in his home of Avignon. He composed music for saxes, clarinets, cellos, keyboards, guitar, bass & drums, to be played by professional musicians (with all of Volapuk as part of the band). Then he added tapes he had made of ''amateur'' musicians performing in impromptu situations. This work is a mixture of the compositions for septet plus taped fragments of the amateurs. Neither aspect stands alone, as each - the professional & the enthusiastic amateur - is assimilated into the whole. Great compositions, great playing & a beautiful cover; a brilliant & unique presentation". -Cuneiform

Burroughs, Brion Gysin would influence the most creative minds of the '60s and '70s. In 1954, Gysin launched his 1001 Nights club in Tangier. In his mythic restaurant that stayed opened only a few months, Gysin invited the best traditional Moroccan musicians to perform all night long. The first CD of this document is what the lucky Western and Moroccan customers of the interzone could hear at the time: a varied selection of pure traditional and trance music (along with other Joujouka master musicians, Bachir Attar's father). Joujouka utilizes the technique of circular breathing backed by trance-inducing rhythms and sounds from the rhaita, reed flutes and small drums. A decade before Brian Jones brought this timeless music to the world, this is a unique document recorded by the inventor of the cut-up method himself, digitally remastered by Brion's recordings heir Ramuntcho Matta and includes Paul Bowles' exclusive introduction. The second volume of this double CD document is based on a spoken word tape called Dilaloo that is a precise description -- written and read in 1956 by Brion Gysin 'Master Brahim' himself -- of an initiation ceremony in the village of Jajouka. Ramuntcho added a quiet electronic music background generated by a computer algorithm program that he created in Gysin's random permutative spirit. Between the music of trance and the raw cry of being, we see the process of transformation at work. Trust your bones and put your faith in the Third Mind! "1993 CD of Brion Gysin's songs, poems and stories, set to music by Ramuntcho Matta, performed by Gysin and Matta, with Don Cherry, Elli Medeiros, Steve Lacy, Lizzy Mercier Descloux & Carolline Loeb, Abdoulaye Prosper Niang, Polo Lombardo, etc. 'Album based on texts by the legendary American poet, painter and writer who has influenced two generations of artists. After a brief involvement with the Surrealists, Gysin was one of the first Anglo-Saxons who moved to Morocco in the early Fifties. He became a close friend of William Burroughs', and invented the cut-up technique, which was largely used by the author of The Naked Lunch throughout his work. Recorded shortly before his death in 86, this album is a unique document featuring Brion Gysin singing/rapping his own texts on music by Ramuntcho Matta." -Forced Exposure

Hayward, Charles: Switch On War Hayward, Charles: Switch On War
Price: $14.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"Originally devised as a performance for the Club Integral, in South London, at the height of the military activity, 'Switch on War' was a harsh and brutal response to the media coverage of the conflict informed by a grotesque and disconcerting anti-music aesthetic heavily influenced by the disorientating, overloaded sound world of Space Invaders arcades. The CD version was recorded binaurally some weeks later, live in a disused morgue, as the war came to its stalemate close. By this time the anger had a bleak streak of sadness, a distorted expressionist requiem. This CD had the life expectancy of a magazine article or some such, no more than a year and it would be archive, a mere souvenir". -Sub Rosa

Price: $160.00
Quantity in Basket: none
The 5 full-length discs in Box 1 cover Henry Cow's career from the pre-Virgin Records days up to roughly 1975. These are all previously unreleased recordings, some live, some demo, some studio, all sonically enhanced by Bob Drake's painstaking re-mastering. We are treated to everything from early BBC sessions to somewhat later live improvisations, alternate recordings with Robert Wyatt, to the full 18 minute version of "With the Yellow Moon And Half Star" (The Bacchae). There are many compositions and improvisations new to anyone who only knows the official releases; The disks also document a number of one-off projects and events and - where different or remarkable enough to justify inclusion - live versions of parts of the LP repertoire. The hefty, 60-page booklet is chock-full of historic information and exclusive photos. The 4 full-length CD's + 1 DVD in Box 2 cover the Cow's career from roughly 1976 to the band's demise, with an emphasis on the later era. Nobody knew that this 75-minute concert broadcast of the band existed, so the DVD is a real boon, and has spectacular versions of "Beautiful As The Moon", "Living In The Heart Of The Beast", "March", "Erk Gah", "No More Songs" and a great, improvisational piece. The music discs are also excellent, and include as highlights the original version of "Joan", as well as a 12 minute, hitherto unreleased piece by Lindsay Cooper, and great versions of "Erk Gah and "Viva Pa Ubu". There's also some immaculate improvising, including a 17 minute foray from the original RIO Festival, and Fred's "Awake Against Sleep" from the Western Culture sessions - and all that's just the tip of the iceberg. The hefty, 60-page booklet is chock-full of historic information and exclusive photos. And everything has been carefully transferred and re-mastered by Bob Drake to the best audio quality that current technology allows without interference or tampering.

Henry Cow: Stockholm & Goteborg Henry Cow: Stockholm & Goteborg
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
This is the first new release in 30 years from this legendary audience-splitting British group, and the first featuring Georgina Born, the group's bassist from 1976-78. Remixed and re-mastered from the original Swedish radio tapes. Henry Cow were never going to fit in. Their compositions were way too composed and their improvising was way too improvised - a tendency that only got more extreme as time went on, as these recordings from 1976 and 1977 demonstrate. Stockholm and Goteborg fills in some of the missing history between In Praise of Learning (1975) and Western Culture (1978) and offers music that has not been heard on record until now. First is Tim Hodgkinson's late and fiendishly complicated epic composition 'Erk Gah' (a working title), that took many months of sweat to learn and resolutely eschews any hint of riff, solo or modular assembly. At the other extreme are the two wide-ranging improvisations built around heady extended instrumental techniques, aleatorics, quotations, more-or-less randomly inserted prepared materials and a blithe disregard for genre rules. Between, constantly shifting ground, are a straight-ahead version of Phil Ochs' No more Songs (one of only two covers ever performed by the band), an unreleased composition by Fred Frith, and a version of the Ottawa Song: a typical live set from that period. Finally, Stockholm is a snapshot of a band of exceptional talents having fun. And it reflects what the studio albums could not - that Henry Cow's natural habitat was the stage - and the real-time pressure of public performance - because it was there that the music could live and breathe. And evolve.

Hideki, Kato/ James Fei: Sieves Hideki, Kato/ James Fei: Sieves
Price: $18.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"Based in New York City since 1992, Kato Hideki--a former member of Otomo Yoshihide's group Ground-Zero and Tony Buck's band Peril--has been involved in myriad projects in America and Europe, including Fred Frith and Ikue Mori's Death Ambient, and a multimedia collaboration with Nicholas Collins. Taiwan-born James Fei studied with Alvin Lucier and Anthony Braxton following his move to the U.S. (also in '92). Now living in New York, he's active as a composer and improviser, and as an instructor at Columbia University's Computer Music Center. Fei is also a sax player, although he doesn't use the instrument on this album. In recent years, Kato and Fei have been performing as a duo at live music venues and galleries in New York. Sieves was made through a process of excerpting, editing, mixing, and mastering electronic performance and recording using feedback; live-performance-like analog mixes; and performance-recording of acoustic reverberation. Not limited to mere documentation and editing, the recording process was treated as a form of improvisation and composition." -Japanimprov.com

Hodkinson, Tim: Sketch of Now Hodkinson, Tim: Sketch of Now
Price: $16.96
Quantity in Basket: none
Tim Hodgkinson co-founded the politically and musically radical free-jazz/progressive rock group Henry Cow in 1968, which also featured guitarist Fred Frith. He regards his membership in this group, with the opportunity to work closely and collectively with other instrumentalists in developing new sound worlds, as the foundation of his musical education. In addition to composing, Hodgkinson continues to perform as an improviser (clarinets, saxophones, and keyboards) and considers the practice of improvisation as an important aesthetic form in contemporary music. This disc explores Hodgkinson's other side as a composer, and also as a soloist, of recent compositions for ensembles (2001-2004). The works explore a variety of processes and influences - Korean and ritual Siberian music, improvisation, the actual use of Musique Concrete, and combinations/transformations of acoustic instruments with electronics and tape.

Taken from the original master tapes, this includes a never heard bonus track from the original sessions, as well as new notes by Hugh that tell the story of 1984. John Surman: Way Back When John Surman: Way Back When
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"This is a truly stupendous archival find, with broad appeal to both jazz and early fusion fans. This never before released album was recorded on October 7th, 1969 by John Surman and British jazz superstars. It is a mix between the vibrancy of late 60's uk jazz and spacey early electric jazz/rock ala 'In A Silent Way'; listening to this album, you can hear that the fusion explosion is on the cusp of happening. Soprano/baritone saxophonist John Surman is one of the UK's best known jazzmen, having released 8 albums under his own name between 1968 - 1974 for mainstream labels such as Deram and Island. He was a member of John McLaughlin's final UK-based group, recording John's famous first solo album, Extrapolation with him in 1969, six months before recording Way Back When. Since the late 1970's, he has mostly recorded for the ECM label, recording dozens of albums as either the leader or as a sideman. 'In mid-October, 1969, I left the UK to meet up with bassist Barre Phillips and drummer Stu Martin to begin working with them as 'The Trio'. Before I left however, a few close friends and I held a sort of 'farewell' session in Tangerine Studios in London. On hand were drummer John Marshall, electric pianist John Taylor and Brian Odgers on bass guitar - later Mike Osborne appeared with his alto and joined us. Shortly after I left England, the studios closed down and, although a few test pressings were made, the original tapes got lost in the general confusion. Much to my surprise the masters had survived and were uncovered in 2003...what you are hearing accurately reflects the sound of the sixties...it offers genuine insight into some of the musical directions that were being explored at the end of that swinging decade in the UK.'-John Surman". -Cuneiform

Price: $14.95

"Zbigniew Karkowski studied composition at the State College of Music in Gothenburg, Sweden, aesthetics of modern music at the University of Gothenburg's Department of Musicology, and computer music at the Chalmers University of Technology. After completing his studies in Sweden, he studied sonology for a year at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Den Haag, The Netherlands. During his education, he also attended many summer composition master courses arranged by Centre Acanthes in Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, France, studying with Iannis Xenakis, Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, and Georges Aperghis, among others. He works actively as a composer of both acoustic and electroacoustic music. He has written pieces for large orchestra (commissioned and performed by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra), plus an opera and several chamber music pieces that were performed by professional ensembles in Sweden, Poland and Germany. He is a founding member of the electroacoustic music performance trio 'Sensorband.' Karkowski has lived and worked in Tokyo, Japan for the past eight years, and is active in the underground noise scene there. Professionally active in contemporary, industrial, rock and experimental music for the last 15 years. One and Many: an ode to loudspeakers -- These life conditions lead to a radical conclusion: the traditional definitions of music are irrelevant and music theories and music as a cultural concept must be destroyed. That is what we find in his latest works, in which his main concern is to produce pieces out of electronic sounds and acoustic walls on scores developed from the architecture of ruins. His last opus called 'who am I' is the exact development of years of theories and practices. As many of Karkowski's pieces, this is a highly delicate yet physical work, which can be seen as an ode to loudspeakers". -Forced Exposure

Kodjabashia, Nikola: Explosion of a Memory Kodjabashia, Nikola: Explosion of a Memory
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none

Performed by the Macedonian Symphony Orchestra with Balkan electro legend Kiril Dzajkovski, Chris Cutler (percussion), Nikola Kodjbashia (prepared piano), Patric Driver and Valere Novarina (readers). Text fragments are by Heiner Muller and Valere Novarina.

A four-dimensional explosion in which stretches of Baroque, folk themes and Byzantine liturgy exist contemporaneously with modern and post-modern materials - much as strata emerge where tectonic plates fold one time over another - settling eventually into long, beautiful, tonal stretches, lighter than air, that drift and attenuate to reveal, dreamily, the old simplicities. Immersive, timeless and unmistakably new, this music respects but definitively breaks with existing schools to explore instead its own geographically unique influences and contradictions.

'Explosion of a Memory' is a homage to my literary heroes: James Joyce, Heiner Muller, Valere Novarina, William Gibson, Euripides and Colin Teevan; it's also a deeply personal epic about the complex relationship between childhood myths, history and perpetual homecoming'. NK it."

Konk Pack: Big Deep Konk Pack: Big Deep
Price: $9.00
Quantity in Basket: none
While countless ad hoc improv ensembles obsess over minutiae, the aptly named Konk Pack--featuring Henry Cow cofounder Tim Hodgkinson, analog-synth master Thomas Lehn, and percussionist Roger Turner--has less time for such subtlety. Konk Pack prefers its gestures writ large as a triphammer slamming your skull. It's easy to lose sight of communication concerns when making such a big and boisterous noise, but these players are too astute to careen into hapless clamor. There are finely honed instincts at work on these tracks, recorded during three live performances. Turner's spirited percussion instigates the exchange between Hodgkinson's guitar, played "flat" a la Fred Frith or Keith Rowe, and Lehn's sparking, spitting synth. On "Scuffling Branca," "Moment Legs Leave," and "Not Head Only In," Turner alternately moderates the ruckus and intensifies its aggressive tenor, goading the musicians into ever-wilder responsive warbles and groans. Hodgkinson switches to alto sax calls and squabbles on "Longer Blue Goes Bone" bringing Konk Pack closer to the pointillism of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, encouraging Lehn to summon furious scratching sounds like a synth-scouring Derek Bailey. Though the joys of noise are undeniable, Big Deep's strongest moments evidence more deliberate tending. "Odile Meets Kipper" flirts with a steady beat, but ultimately settles into abstract three-way communication. "Dream Behind Lick" comes together from diverse percussive and electronic elements, making the climactic welter of watery glissandi, wildly wobbling analog frequencies, and bowed sounds seem that much more monumental.

"1993 reissue, available again! Reissue of both records by this sorta legendary Swedish rock trio led by Michael Maksymenko, as originally issued in 1980-81. Heavily influenced by the convoluted blues of prime-era Beefheart Magic Band, these guys played a fairly unbelievable variation on the style -- intense, full throttle guitar/bass/drum interplay with absolutely crazed Swedish vocals on top. Beefheart fanatics use to fall face flat when hearing this stuff back when it came out, and I'm sure there's a whole slew of newcomers ready for the same gust of Nordic madness. Guitarist Maksymenko went on to work with Henry Kaiser in the later 80s, forming the band Crazy Backwards Alphabet (along with Magic Band drummer Drumbo French). Krieger,Ulrich: Early American Minimalism Krieger,Ulrich: Early American Minimalism
Price: $14.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"...Early American Minimalism. Featuring classic 1960s works by: Steve Reich, Terry Riley & Philip Glass. 'Walls of Sound is about what I call: 'static music' -- music that isn't semantic, gestured, or narrative, that doesn't move or change atmospherically, and isn't dramatic or has a development in the traditional European sense. If it changes it does it very slowly. The emphasis lies on the 'aural sculpture' in which one enters not just with the ears, but also physically with the whole body, and eventually with your mind, altering your perception. Inside the sculpture, inside the static, there are endless changing details, variations and microcosms. In a certain way it is a modern form of trance or ritualistic music without a pre-fixed ritual. This work is about 'pattern music', general mostly referred to as 'Minimal Music'. A music that uses as its main technique repeated (modal) patterns, which get varied or shifted against each other, generating 'audio walls', taking the emphasis and attention away from the original melodic pattern material towards the aural sculpture, the acoustic phenomenon. This is true for the early American Minimalism before 1970, which still was very conceptual, and did hold a strong influence from Fluxus ('1+1', 'Pendulumn Music'). Riley and La Monte Young had been active in the Fluxus scene. Also Conceptual Art, Minimal Art and Op Art were somehow related to and an influence for Minimal Music. Often the early Minimal Music pieces were just pure concepts (Pendulumn Music). This new music, which saw it's light in the 60s in America, was anti- or at least non-European. Young American composers were trying to find alternatives away from extremely intellectual European 'New Music' aesthetics, techniques of Serialism, Ultra-Expressionism and Accademia. The main influences were non-European and non-American: mainly Indian classical music (Riley, Glass) and African music (Reich).' -- Ulrich Krieger. Pieces performed are: Philip Glass: 'Music in Fifths' (1969): Steve Reich: 'Pendulumn Music' (1968): Terry Riley: 'Dorian Reeds' (1964); Philip Glass: '1+1'(1968); Steve Reich: 'Phase' (1967)". -Forced Exposure

The album provided the two musicians the opportunity to display their skills on a wide array of instruments, with Huguenin revealing particular talents on guitar and Vuille on both guitar and clarinet; multi-tracking and a host of guest musicians gave L'Ensemble Rayé the sound of a full band on most of the tracks.

One of the very first (maybe *the* first) CD release on the late, great AYAA label was by this mostly instrumental Swiss trio of tenor sax, bass and drums. 20 years later, here they are again, now with a guitarist and a couple of guests on a few songs, with a fine third album and somewhat of a different sound than before. While the influences/energy/etc of the old 'downtown NYC' sound is still there, there's also some more 'modern sounding' influences here and there and it isn't as obviously in the Curlew/Decoding Society axis as before, with some great moody bits. --Wayside Music

Lewis, George & Turetzky, Bertram: Conversations
Price: $12.99
Quantity in Basket: none
"This series of duets between trombonist George Lewis and bassist Bertham Turetzky is anything but a minimally theoretical recording. Here are workouts ("North Country Diatribe"), songs ("Brief Ballad" and "After Dark"), deep funky blues ("Ecumenical Blues"), and truly wooly improvisations ("Take One"). But it's all improvisation, of course; all realized dynamic and dramatic tension as played by a pair of veteran support players who really know how to drive a band. Yet these nine selections are actually conversations in their truest sense in that when a statement is made by one and answered by the other, it is dialogue certainly, but, more importantly, conversation in that the way one musician states his course and state of affairs is then shaped by the other, who turns it back over and again and so on until at the end of this series of musical metonymic strategies and metaphorical constructions, what emerges is an interplay that rests on the embrace of the three dimensions of tonality to state its case". -Thom Jurek, AMG

Ullén has supplemented these with the two Etudes Ligeti completed after the original discs came out (À bout de soufflé and Canon), plus two first recordings: L'Arrache-Coeur (a 1994 work originally intended as Etude No. 11) and Four Early Piano Pieces (Basso Ostinato) from 1941. For the two-piano and one-piano-four-hands works, Ullén overdubs himself. As the cliché goes, Ullén may have equals in Ligeti's innovative Etudes, but few serious rivals.

"Another classic Lucier catalog item, a 45-minute recording made in 1991 of this piece that he first conceived in 1978. The piece is for: amplified clock, performer with galvanic skin response sensor and digital delay system. The sounds that emanate are beautifully shifting patterns of tock-collage that reveal dramatic sonic detailings. 'I wanted to make a work in which a performer could speed up and slow down time, stopping it, if possible, simply by thinking. I bought a Westclox Silver Bell Monogram in a local store and ordered a galvanic skin response sensor through the Edmund Scientific Catalogue. A GSR is designed to measure differences in skin resistance caused by changes in emotional state. A small current is sent through the body, the response to which is amplified, producing an output voltage which can be used to control various devices...later I added a bank of fixed delays which, as they splay out from the voltage controlled delay, create multiple reflections that almost convince the listener that the room is changing size." -Forced Exposure

Alvin Lucier (b. 1931) has been a pioneer in many areas of music composition and performance, including the notation of performers' physical gestures, the use of brain waves in live performance, the generation of visual imagery by sound in vibrating media, and the evocation of room acoustics for musical purposes. 'Navigations for Strings' (1991) consists of 4 tunes, for which a long stream of continually changing melodic and instrumental combinations occur. In 'Small Waves' (1997), six glass vessels, some partially filled with water, are mounted on pedestals scattered around the performance space. Microphones are inserted into the mouths of the vessels, then routed through corn compressor-limiters to amplifiers and monitor speakers. During the course of the performance, the volume levels of the amplifiers are raised and lowered, causing feedback at pitches determined by the size and shape of the containers and their proximity to the loudspeakers. Both works are remarkable microtonal musical experiences." -Forced Exposure

Marcoeur, Albert: L'Apostrophe Marcoeur, Albert: L'Apostrophe
Price: $19.95
Quantity in Basket: none
L'apostraphe is an extraordinary new CD from Albert and his brothers - and many guest musicians. As always these are meticulously crafted songs, eccentric, brilliantly arranged and now opened out into a whole new world of sounds and treatments as they struggle through old cinema soundtracks, aural fog, nostalgia, distortion, interference or a dizzy, dreamlike aural Sargasso sea of trailing weeds. Diffuse, yet with every detail pin sharp. Remarkable. I had to listen three times to find it and that's always a good sign.

Marcoeur, Albert: M,A,R, Et Coeur Comme Coeur Marcoeur, Albert: M,A,R, Et Coeur Comme Coeur
Price: $10.00
Quantity in Basket: none
This is probably Albert's least recognized recording. That's a shame because, like everything he's released, it's a gem. This disk is more aligned to his mid-period work (like Ma Vie Avec Elle, or Sports & Percussion) than his earlier, more clearly whacked material. Indeed, much of this disc was culled from his mid-period, showing off his then newly mature side of composition. Like Ma Vie or Sports, the counterpoint is still there, only a bit more obfuscated than before: it can mostly be noticed in subtle instances where sounds are expertly manipulated thru the stereo spectrum. The recording/sound is great, and while I wouldn't suggest this as a starting point for the uninitiated, it is truly a wonderful disc.

Matching Mole: March Matching Mole: March
Price: $13.95

"Formed by drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt after he left the pioneering UK jazz/rock Soft Machine in 1971. By early 1972, the band conisted of Robert, guitarist Phil Miller, bassist Bill MacCormick & electric pianist Dave MacRae. The band was exceedingly active for a band that lasted less than one year, recording two albums and playing dozens of shows throughout Europe. In 2001, Cuneiform released Smoke Signals, a collection of unreleased performances. The band was so pleased with that album that when one of the members came across a forgotten live show on tape - identified simply as 'March, 1972', they immediately contacted us, and this album is the result. Recorded live in Europe 3/72, shortly after Dave MacRae became the keyboardist, this includes the basic repertoire that the band would perform during their lifetime, with a few surprises thrown in. The sound is surprisingly superb for a live show of this vintage, and once again Tom Recchion has come up with a charming cover. 'Great sound, great artwork - so thanks once again.' -Robert Wyatt" -Cuneiform

"Formed by drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt after he left the pioneering UK outfit Soft Machine in 1971. By early 1972, the band conisted of Robert, guitarist Phil Miller, bassist Bill MacCormick & electric pianist Dave McRae. Smoke Signals compiles all previously unreleased performances - selected & sequenced by Robert Wyatt biographer Mike King - from the band's most intense gigging period. The set list is mostly drawn from Little Red Record, but the way the band performed the pieces live is quite different from the heavily overdubbed versions found on the studio disc. Despite their very short lifetime, Mole developed an individual sound based on the players idiosyncratic musical styles, that was a unique take on fusion and Canterbury musics. Features an amazing cover and liner notes by Aymeric Leroy". -Cuneiform

  Monk, Meredith: Mercy
Price: $15.99
Quantity in Basket: none
"An important new musical work, Meredith Monk's eighth ECM recording is released just prior to the 60th birthday of the composer. For almost 40 years, the great interdisciplinary artist has been overturning categories, transcending the limitations of any of the idioms. 'Mercy' was first unleashed in America as a multi-media stage work which Monk realized together with noted installation artist Ann Hamilton. The album, though, is far more than a 'soundtrack'. Not only did some of the music predate the stage work - incorporating several pieces that Meredith had written before joining forces with Hamilton - the stage material has been rigorously rearranged with "many changes, compressions, expansions of forms." Meredith's Monk's work touches on so many areas, but at the heart of it is singing, exploring the human voice in all its possibilities. Her innovations in what is now called 'extended vocal technique' have been enormously influential. When she began her vocal pioneering, in 1965, this area was largely unexplored. Since then echoes of Monk's work can be heard across the genres, influencing artists as diverse as Joan La Barbara and Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson and Björk (whose current live set includes Meredith's 'Gotham Lullaby')".-ECM

Moore, R. Stevie: Phonography Moore, R. Stevie: Phonography
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none

"Phonography was Stevie's first LP release, and an out-of-the-blue masterpiece: terminally idiosyncratic but with all the compositional qualities of great pop. A gifted songwriter, R Stevie (son of Bob Moore, Elvis' bassist) grew up and was steeped in Nashville's countrypolitanism; but, as a recidivist rebel, he inevitably slipped into strange byways, following his own, unique path into celebrated obscurity - as this strange and compelling record attests.

Hans Arp said, 'My paintings are like fingernails: they keep growing and I keep cutting them off'. R Stevie's songs seem to follow the same rule. They create worlds, tell stories, trifle wantonly with form, harmony, structure and execution, and throw off passages of casual brilliance on the way. Lo-fi is integral to its purpose. You can't pay to get a sound like that.

So, when nobody seemed to want to keep Phonography in print, ReR Megacorp were happy to oblige - it's history. We took the opportunity to re-master and restore it to its original form."

Muffins: Bandwidth Muffins: Bandwidth
Price: $13.95

"Since their demise in 1981, The Muffins have been generally acknowledged as one of the finest (and one of the most unsung) U.S. proponents of progressive/new music. During their lifetime, The Muffins were never less than amazing, and with the reissues on CD of their back catalog, their reputation only grew. In a very happy occurance, all four members of the band reformed in 1998 and began developing a new repertoire and performing concerts. In a world glutted with half-baked reformations by bands looking to cash in on past glories, Bandwidth is the genuine article; a reformation of all the original members who who have gotten together not for money, but because they miss what they had done together in the past and who feel that they still have something to say. Bandwidth is very recognizably the work of The Muffins; you can hear elements of both Manna/Mirage and <185> here, as well as lots of new elements". -Cuneiform

Muffins: Double Negative Muffins: Double Negative
Price: $13.95

"It is an all-too-rare occurrence for a band, throughout its career, to create music that continually pushes the envelope and transforms the landscape. It is an even rarer occurrence for such a band to reunite after a long separation, and embark on a second musical career that proves as innovative as the first. For The Muffins, lightning has struck twice. In 1998, The Muffins reformed with all four members, and it proved to be the genuine article. Double Negative is The Muffins' 2nd studio recording released since reforming and possibly the most ambitious work of their career. Featuring 75 minutes of music spread over 17 songs, Double Negative is The Muffins' most compositionally diverse work, featuring pieces that vary in style and tone greatly, but which are always theirs (although they might fool you for a bit here and there!). The Muffins have long been noted for the way they craft memorable themes with adventurous musical structures and this is no exception. In addition, it is the band's most instrumentally rich work, featuring an unprecedented number of musical guest appearances. Two principal members of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott, play sax on several tracks, while longtime Muffins contributor, Doug Elliott, contributes excellent trombone parts to half the pieces and string players also contribute". -Cuneiform

Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"This marks the first time that this version of this classic Canterbury group (Alan Gowen, John Greaves, Phil Miller, Pip Pyle) has been documented on record. This edition of the band strove towards a more stretched-out, free-er approach. As Phil remembers it, 'Basically, we did less writing and more playing.' Indeed, this version of National Health did more gigging that any other lineup of the band, but they never released any recordings until now. Recorded at two different shows in 1979 - including one show that features the addition of guest guitarist Alain Eckert (Art Zoyd) - the majority of the compositions on Playtime cannot be found on any other National Health recording. It includes a 16 page booklet with liner notes by Aymeric Leroy, which tells the story of this last period of the band. Illustrated with rare photos, interviews and comments with all surviving members of the band, this is a fantastic and unexpected document 20 years later, of a much loved band". -Cuneiform

New York Art Quartet : Old Stuff New York Art Quartet : Old Stuff
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"This release is truly a remarkable archival find! Formed in the summer of 1964, although the New York Art Quartet existed for barely a year and a half, great interest remains in their work. They consisted of co-leaders John Tchicai (alto sax), who participated in John Coltrane's ground-breaking Ascension album and Roswell Rudd (trombone), considered to be the first free-jazz trombonist, along with bassist Don Moore and drummer Milford Graves. The band participated in the legendary "October Revolution in Jazz", which journalist Bill Shoemaker called, "Arguably the most seminal jazz concert series ever held...it was a comprehensive four-day survey of jazz's cutting edge.... It marked the beginning of the Golden Era of do-it-yourself jazz culture in the U.S." The New York Art Quartet recorded their self-titled first album for ESP and Tchicai went back to his homeland of Denmark to scout out work for the group. Only Rudd was able to join him, so the pair enlisted Copenhagen bassist Finn von Eyben and South African drummer Louis Moholo, who had very recently left South Africa with the Blue Notes; this is one of his earliest recordings. This lineup of the New York Art Quartet performed two concerts in Copenhagen in October, 1965, which is where these recordings were made.Released on the 45th anniversary of the October Revolution, this historic issue features all previously unheard and unreleased recordings of brilliant and firey musical interplay that have really great, high quality, period live sound. In the 8 page booklet are never-before seen photos and a short, informative essay by writer Jason Weiss, who produced this album."" --Cuneiform"

Nitsch, Hermann: Requiem Fur Meine Frau Beate Nitsch, Hermann: Requiem Fur Meine Frau Beate
Price: $41.95
Quantity in Basket: none
In 1977, the death of Beate Nitsch drove Hermann into an unequivocal depression. It only logical, that his strongest and most powerful aktionen is dedicated to his wife. It is also a crucial point in the development of his art. Before, Hermann Nitsch's music was basically released as a wall of noise. The musicians could play what they wanted and the only instruction was to play as loud as possible. Only the duration, the starting point and the noise level of each instrument was fixed. For the first time with the Requiem, Nitsch started to conceive longer tone clusters, especially for the wind instruments. The perfect acoustics of the church with its wonderful organ, which shocked Nitsch with its intensity and power, suggested him a new direction in music. Among the lucky audience were many friends coming from all over the world to witness the event. For everyone the Requiem was an important and ecstatic experience. The big success of the aktion gave Nitsch the strength to continue his work. For the first time, this 2CD edition, in tri-folded digipack, reproducing the impossible-to-find 3LP art gallery edition issued in Naples in 1977 for the Radiotaxi series, is available, including a 12-page folded insert with drawings and directions from the LP box set original graphics. This edition also includes a 32-page shocking full color photo documentation of the aktion, available for the first time, and only consists of 1000 copies.

Nurse With Wound: Rock 'N Roll Station Nurse With Wound: Rock 'N Roll Station
Price: $17.99
Quantity in Basket: none
As with any NWW release, the surreal is represented through well-placed sonic aberrations and free-associative wordplay. The lines between conscious, subconscious and unconscious are still deliberately manipulated and transgressed. However, the appropriation of genre staples like throbbing bass and ass-shaking beats serve to draw attention away from these manipulations so that they can exist on the periphery of perception where they are arguably more potent. There are tons of standout sequences here but my particular favorite is probably in "2 Golden Microphones" where an extended didgeridoo-based tribal freak out yields (slightly) to a chanted set of dreamlike connections that form a bizarre chain of cause and effect where each step makes sense although the final destination is in no way predictable from the starting point. It's a neat re-statement in miniature of the broader sweep of this excellent dollop of mind bending psych-dance drone from one of the masters.

"Before Sampling, there was analog tape, and...Bob Ostertag's Getting A Head with Fred Frith and Charles K. Noyes. An underground classic of tape manipulation from before the days of samplers. Best known for his work with computers, here a young Ostertag plays an instrument consisting of a highly unstable and peculiar recording system, which uses helium balloons to hold up tape loops between three tape recorders made to malfunction in a variety of ways. Even today there is no computer that can do quite what this contraption does. Ostertag uses this rather sculptural and bizarre contraption to manipulate the brilliant guitar playing of Fred Frith, and the elusive percussion work of Charles K. Noyes. Originally released 21 years ago as an LP on Rift, the 1,000-copy run quickly disappeared into the abyss of the collectors item." -Forced Exposure

Oxley, Tony With The Bimp Quartet: Floating Phantoms Oxley, Tony With The Bimp Quartet: Floating Phantoms
Price: $18.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"Without renouncing his claim already developed in the early years, Tony Oxley manages, together with the members of the B.I.M.P. Quartet, to develop improvisation in correspondence with the current sound ´happenings´, without running in pursuit of the Zeitgeist. Improvised music coming from England is associated in many people´s minds with musical monochromatic asceticism and the purist reduction of expressive means. Despite the fact that these are, to a large extent, clichés, the reinforcement of preconceived patterns of thought, the B.I.M.P. Quartet demonstrates its concentration on the essential as well as a surprising sensuousness, particularly in ´Streamline´. The way of using samples does not turn out to be a ´cabaret-like´ play with quotations, even though a subtle deriding of the European classic is unmistakable. The juxtaposition of different materials is reminiscent of the lines of tradition which go back to John Cage and as far as Dadaism. What makes the musical quality of the B.I.M.P. Quartet is the integration of all these elements as well as the sense of humour within a serious context of improvisation. In the dialectics of minimalism and complexity, intellect and sensuousness, a kind of sound aesthetics becomes apparent, integrating aspects of New Music and free improvisation, of Jazz and Contemporary Electronics and, at the same time, leads beyond the absorbed lines of tradition and existing categories."-Bert Noglik

  Parkins, Zeena: Nightmare Alley
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Step right up and meet the astounding Zeena Parkins, the world's greatest electric harpist. Forget about angelic choirs; Zeena cites Jimi Hendrix as a major inspiration, and her harp work is similarly explosive, often blurring into fuzz-distorted terrain. Parkins is a lightning bolt of a performer, and a much sought after collaborator; she works frequently with Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and Jim O'Rourke, has performed with Courtney Love and Yoko Ono, and has recorded extensively and toured the world several times with Icelandic avant-pop diva Björk. Recorded in 1992, Nightmare Alley was Zeena's first solo release and the first CD on Table Of The Elements. A hypnotic classic, it lures the listener into a parallel world of sensations, one that is disorienting and surreal, strangely pleasurable and more than a little dangerous. Step inside if you dare -- you won't believe your ears!

Partch, Harry: Collection Vol. 1 Partch, Harry: Collection Vol. 1
Price: $17.50
Quantity in Basket: none
"This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the 'third period' of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with 'the intrinsic music of spoken words' that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the 'music-dance drama' King Oedipus (1951) -- the culmination of his 'spoken word' manner -- to the 'dance satire' The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a 'minor adventure in rhythm,' is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments." -Forced Exposure

"2005 remaster, from original mono master tapes (recorded in 1957). 'The Bewitched' was Partch's first work solely intended for dance (and mime-dance at that; he was not overly enamored in his lifetime of so-called 'modern dance'). Drawing heavily from his deep affection for the music-theatrical performance traditions of Greek theater, as well as those from Africa, Bali, and Chinese opera, Partch conceived of a contemporary American music ritual-theater where musicians not only play, but also function at times as movers-singers-actors. Such is the case of The Bewitched, where the instruments are the set, in front of (and around) which dancers 'dance,' but where the onstage musicians also move and sing. Partch's masterpiece has been lovingly remastered from the original mono masters and the 24-page booklet includes never-before-published photographs from productions of The Bewitched. This is the definitive document of this very important work.' 'The Bewitched is in the tradition of world-wide ritual theatre. It is the opposite of specialized. I conceived and wrote it in California in the period 1952-55, following the several performances of my version of Sophocles' Oedipus. In spirit, if not wholly in content, it is a satyr-play. It is a seeking for release --through satire, whimsy, magic, ribaldry -- from the catharsis of tragedy. It is an essay toward a miraculous abeyance of civilized rigidity, in the feeling that the modern spirit might thereby find some ancient and magical sense of rebirth. Each of the 12 scenes is a theatrical unfolding of nakedness, a psychological strip-tease, or -- a diametric reversal, which has the effect of underlining the complementary character, the strange affinity, of seeming opposites.' -- Harry Partch." -Forced Exposure

Partch, Harry: Enclosure Five (3 CD Set) Partch, Harry: Enclosure Five (3 CD Set)
Price: $31.50
Quantity in Basket: none
"The fifth part of The American Composer's Forum series chronicling the life and work of Harry Partch (1901-74), one of America's most extraordinary, yet central, composers. Partch was a self-taught musician, eclectic visionary, instrument-builder, microtonal theorist, gay, sometime-hobo, who conceived and composed a Corporeal, integrated, ancient ritual theater. Enclosure Five is a 3-CD set focussing on Partch's works inspired by ancient Greece. It includes important works published here for the first time, reissues of out-of-print recordings, and new performances. With this issue, the entirety of Partch's recorded ouevre (with one exception) is publicly available for the first time. Taken with the rest of the Enclosures series and the Harry Partch Collection on CRI, we can now begin to assess Partch's whole output. Works include: A reissue of 'Ulysses at the Edge' with Jack Logan playing the trumpet part originally intended for Chet Baker; 'Revelation in the Courthouse Park (after The Bacchae of Euripides),' in its original version recorded at the University of Illinois in 1960 and excerpted on Partch's own Gate Five records; 'King Oedipus,' the culmination of Partch's Speech-Music period, in its original version using the translation by W.B. Yeats. Although Partch considered this his most important work (it took 19 years to write) and an excellent performance (featuring the incomparable Allen Louw as Oedipus), it was never released because of a permission dispute; Miscellaneous short Speech-Music works: 'By the Rivers of Babylon' (reorchestrated from the version heard on Enclosure Two); 'Come Away, Death' from the lost collection, December 1942. This work, for voice and guitar, appears in with the work by Douglas Moore that inspired Partch's own setting; and 'Minuet,' a curious Baroque duet performed by Partch and his then-student, Ben Johnston; 'The Bewitched (A Dance Satire)' in a 1980 recording from Cologne featuring an extraordinary performance and recording of this major Partch work (produced by Kenneth Gaburo for the Berlin Festival, with Danlee Mitchell, music director and Isabelle Tercero as The Witch). Partch's own spoken introductions to two of the works are included as well as an extensive booklet. The Enclosures series, named after Partch's last contemplated work and released on the Innova Recordings label of the American Composers Forum, is the culmination of a 13-year endeavor by Dr. Philip Blackburn, a Minnesota-based composer, performer, administrator and scholar. Inspired by Partch's pioneering spirit and dearth of published materials, Blackburn worked with the Harry Partch Foundation, colleague Kenneth Gaburo, and many others to bring Partch's singular voice to the public, attempting to 'let Harry speak for himself.'" -Forced Exposure

Price: $18.95

1979's Perfect Release, continued in the vein of the previous year's X-Dreams. Diatribes on sexual and social politics compliment her pioneering style of jazz rock/funk fusion, further cementing Peacock's role as an individualist and musical pioneer. Individuality is the land mark of Peacock's biography and it seems almost unfair that they should belong to one person; as if her life has been gluttonous for the incidents and acts of legend. She was given one of the first synthesizers by its inventor, Robert Moog in 1968; she appeared topless at the Townhouse in New York; she appeared on The Johnny Carson Show; she performed the first electronic improvising band; she was the first person to sing through a synthesizer and the first to electronically treat the voice in the recording process; she was the first 'rap' over a rock backing; she turned down the offer of appearing on Bowie's Aladdin Sane or performing with him in concert; she invented the 'free-form song'; she became the first holographic actress in a show with Salvador Dali on Broadway... --Forced Exposure

Pip Pyle's Bash: Belle Illusion Pip Pyle's Bash: Belle Illusion
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"Drummer and composer Pip Pyle is widely recognized as the drummer of the Canterbury school of progressive rock. As the drummer for Hatfield and the North and National Health, as well as stints with Gong, In Cahoots, Soft Heap and many, many others in both England and France, Pyle is one of the great drummers of both progressive rock and jazz-rock/fusion. His newest project, Bash!, is a modern electric jazz fusion/Canterbury outfit that integrates all of his past musical experiences while showcasing his compositional skills. In 2002, Pyle formed the group Bash! to perform his own jazz-infused, rock-energized compositions. Besides Pyle, the virtuoso ensemble includes guitarist Patrice Meyer, keyboardist Alex Maguire and bassist Fred Baker. Saxist Elton Dean guests on two tracks. Belle Illusion, despite it being this group's first release, is an organic and remarkably mature work. Its success is in part due to the player's high level of skill, and in part due to the fact that Pyle penned his compositions with these specific players in mind. According to Pyle, Belle Illusion is 'the nearest to writing for specific musicians that I've ever done'. Featuring excellent sound, the CD was recorded live at two festival shows, allowing the excitement that musicians bring to good live performances to be captured here. Bash! is sure to please fans of Pip's work and also to bring new fans to an appreciation of his music". -Cuneiform

"Created in 1977 for the Centre Pompidou foundation on the stage of Paris's Beaubourg, at the instigation of Luciano Berio, 'Liège à Paris' is a fifteen-part composition lasting one hour, where Henri Pousseur takes us on voyage of exploration, mixing the voices of travellers of divers languages and accents, with the sounds of planes, trains, the atmosphere of streets and Iranian restaurants, noises of every sort, cries, ritournellos, nursery rhymes, fragments of former compositions ('Trois visages de Liège', 1961) - a polyphonic story through with the voice (and texts) of Michel Butor - leaving Paris for a world air tour..." -Sub Rosa

Pousseur, Henri: Musique Mixte 1966-1970 Pousseur, Henri: Musique Mixte 1966-1970
Price: $14.99
Quantity in Basket: none
"This is the fourth Henri Pousseur CD in Sub Rosa's Early Electronics series, exploring the work of this Belgian theoretician and experimental/avant garde composer. Along with previous releases in this series, Musique Mixte will cover all his electronic music and his most radical works between 1953 and 1988 -- 35 years of research and experiments. These recordings are a continuation of Sub Rosa's earlier releases, namely: Liège à Paris (a piece composed thanks to Luciano Berio and premiered at the grand opening of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, in 1977), the 8 Études Paraboliques box set (over 220 minutes of music realised in Cologne, 1972, at the WDR's studios -- the last étude featuring Stockhausen's participation) and 4 Parabolic Mixes, (four takes on the work by Henri Pousseur himself, Robert Hampson, Philip Jeck and Markus Popp). The two pieces featured on Musique Mixte (voice, pianos, various electroacoustic devices) are magnum opuses in Pousseur's body of work, though they are seldom heard - 'Jeu de Miroirs de Votre Faust' has been unavailable for a long time, while 'Crosses of Crossed Colors' is released here for the first time ever. 'Already for 'Couleurs croisées,' my initial idea was to add an amplified voice to the orchestra, a voice that could stand up to it and would clarify and explain the meaning of the piece, in the form of a black Baptist minister-style preach. So, besides the voice ('black,' if possible), we have: five pianos, whose assembled parts re-use almost all the harmonic-rhythmic contents of the orchestral piece.' --Henri Pousseur" -Forced Exposure

Poussier, Henri: Paysages Planetaires (Box Set) Poussier, Henri: Paysages Planetaires (Box Set)
Price: $69.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"In year 2000 Henri Pousseur was asked by Philippe Samyn, architect of Brussels who likes to work in association with other arts, to lend his support to the plan for the construction of a business complex by one of the most important building enterprises in the country. There were four low buildings arranged like different parts of a medieval castle-village, grouped around a kind of large open central court. Leaning on the suggested image, Pousseur immediately suggested that the first spinal-column be composed of an electronic carillon, sounding in variations every hour, thus making the hours between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Henri Poussuer imagined then a connection between the time of Nivelles (a city 40 km south of Brussels, where this large project will be situated) and the time of the entire planet and the more or less metaphoric sonic and musical realities attached to it. He made on the one hand the 16 hours of a theoretically complete day of work (from the cleaning service up to the last researches in the office) correspond to the 24 hours of a complete terrestrial revolution. And divided the globe into eight large north/south 'slices', themselves divided into three perpendicular 'rings': north, center, south, with the understanding that only inhabited lands were taken into consideration. To each of the 8 'great hours' of the total duration, Pousseur associated three regions, one of each ring (north/central/south) set out as far apart as possible on the terrestrial globe. Over a background of a fairly continuous variety of noises which are perpetually evolving: sea, fire, city, swamp, industry, forest, etc. there are ethno-musical samples from one region or from several regions involved, more or less worked over by all sorts of numerical methods which vary their capacity to be recognized and their effectiveness as quasi-traditional music. This work once finished (realised in the Studio of the composer's son Denis), Pousseur made a synthesis on three discs by superimposing the landscapes (a bit in the manner of the previous Etudes paraboliques) in 16 Paysages Planetaires. The titles of the landscapes express, by their contraction the simultaneous or alternate presence of several regions; for example, 'Alaskamazonie' is self-explanatory. Something like 'Gamelan Celtibere' brings out a play; between the West Coast of Europe with the Indonesian archipelago and even the northern part of Australia. Continuing like this you could find it amusing to reconstruct the circum-planetary movement of the work. Michel Butor, for forty years accomplice of Henri Pousseur, has been willing to write the prose-verse alternating poetic structure, very luminous, which makes a global accompaniment to the procession of these landscapes. His text is included in the 60 pages documentation booklet, also featuring two long essays by Henri Pousseur: 'Paysages Planetaires' and 'Athmospheric and Cultural Sources for Each of the Landscapes'. Finally, by this work, Henri Pousseur renders homage to all the singers and instrumentalists, sound engineers, ethnic musicologists and editors who have either produced, or gathered and transmitted, all the marvelous musical invention which inspired and nourished the work and which, with the sounds of the world, of nature, of society and of industry, are supposed to represent a kind of formal summing-up of life's multiplicity on this sailing Earth as she travels through cosmic space. All the images, obtained through extensive digital treatments, were conceived and manipulated by Henri Poussuer. Heavy cardboard slipcase with 3CDs and 60 page booklet." -Sub Rosa

"In 1998, when Cuneiform released Present's fifth album, Certitudes, the band came to the USA for the very first time and undertook a huge, full US tour, logging in 10,000 miles and 5 weeks of concerts. Professionally recorded on 24 track on the final date of the tour, after 35 days of touring, the band were a tight, hard-rocking, road-tested machine and this is a very well recorded, stunning, loud and hot performance. Roger & Reggie Trigaux-guitars and vocals, Pierre Chevalier-piano, Jean-Pierre Mendez-bass and Dave Kerman-drums. 'No matter how great their record is, little could have prepared us for experiencing Belgium's Present live. They churned out mind-numbingly complex and shifting songs that always seemed to be driving towards some sort of awesome denouement. If they ever come around again, see them even if you have to kill to do it.' - Atlanta Press". -Cuneiform

Proto-Kaw (Kansas): Early Recordings From Kansas 1971-1973 Proto-Kaw (Kansas): Early Recordings From Kansas 1971-1973
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"This album compiles and releases for the very first time all of the studio recordings (as well as two live recordings) made by guitarist and composer Kerry Livgren with the seven-piece band that immediately preceded the formation of the lineup of the band that the world knows as Kansas. These recordings present a different and fascinating contrast to the music that Kerry would develop and release upon the world with Kansas just a couple of years later. Yet, as composer of all the tracks here, they still have his obvious imprint. In fact, two of the songs here would later reappear in different versions on Kansas' albums; Belexes would show up on the band's self-titled debut album, while Incomudro would appear on their 2nd album, Song For America. With dual keyboards (one of whom doubled on reeds) and an electric saxist/flautist (ala David Jackson) featured in addition to the more standard rock instrumentation, the sound is obviously influenced by jazz/rock pioneers as well as early progressive rock bands such as Van Der Graaf Generator and King Crimson. Early Recordings From Kansas 1971-73 is an exciting archival release of dark and exploratory early American progressive rock. The fact that these musicians were not able to find success while making this adventurous music in the heartland of agricultural America over 30 years ago should not be a surprise, but the fact that the tapes have survived and are able to finally be presented to the world in an authorized form will give fans of Kansas as well as all fans of early progressive rock a very pleasant surprise. These recordings have been licensed from, and released with the full consent and agreement of all the musicians. Kerry Livgren has returned to the original tapes and worked on all tracks in his studio to present this material in the best possible light. He also contributed liner notes and provided archival photographs". -Cuneiform

Rowe, Keith & Tilbury, John: Duos For Doris Rowe, Keith & Tilbury, John: Duos For Doris
Price: $22.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Duos for Doris features guitarist Keith Rowe and pianist John Tilbury, two-thirds of the current AMM lineup, but in place of AMM's layers of thick description (an approach nicely summed up by the title of their album Laminal), these duets offer a scrupulous thinness. Rowe describes this as a "music of zero" in his session-notes (not included in the CD booklet but posted online): "A music that might be nothing in itself but juxtaposed to another: together transformed." This process takes place as much in the listener as in the music itself. Brian Olewnick, who was present at the recording session, contributed a notable early review of the disc for Bagatellen, one characterized by a vigorous, often violent imagery and diction that convey the impression of a disc characterized by furious activity. And yet my first impression on hearing it was closer to "OK, so where's the music?": one wouldn't easily divine from his review that the presiding dynamic level is on a finely-graded scale from p to pppp, with a few momentous exceptions. Yet his review is not therefore inaccurate: the lamination of the musical experience comes not so much in the performance itself as in relistening. For a visual analogy, think of a piece of mica, whose individual layers are each brittle, translucent and almost colourless: it is only as layer is added to layer that the mineral gains character and substance. What is at first almost not-there is gradually materialized as it is successively folded back on itself. If Olewnick's review has something of the princess and the pea about it, this is only because in this music, the pea actually becomes more sensible with each additional layer of mediation.

Price: $16.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"Trumpeters Axel Dörner and Franz Hautzinger transcend many of the aesthetic and geographical factions that have evolved over four decades of European free improv, contributing their gorgeous tones to a wide variety of contexts. On A View From The Window, they join forces with the intensely focused Keith Rowe, one of the scene's founding fathers, and explore the abstract limits of their respective palettes. A View From The Window was recorded in a single day in Vienna in November 2003 by Christoph Amann, superbly as always. Photojournalist Yuko Zama was in attendance for the sessions, and became drawn to the glimpse of sky visible through one of the studio's windows. She took dozens of pictures from different angles, and her fascination inspired Rowe to title the record after the Cardew quote, and to paint a more 'optimistic' version of one of her photos for the front cover. A View From The Window captures these three musicians paring their signature sounds down to their essences, with the occasional plaintive trumpet cry or subtle radio snippet emerging from the delicate intertwining." -Forced Exposure

"If you blink, you've missed it all -- no sound ever remains constant for long in this restless sea. Rabbit Run is the accomplishment of three improvisers working in the absolute extremes of their individual aesthetics, refusing to compromise their signature sounds while still finding plenty of places for each other in the overall sound. Rabbit Run is jam-packed with detail, and yet paradoxically it never becomes too much. The accumulation of sounds is just overwhelming enough to short-circuit all brain cells and force the listener to become completely submerged in the album -- Rabbit Run has its own unique logic, and the only way to appreciate it is on its own terms, by allowing its heady mix of chaos and balance to infiltrate your world." -Ed Howard, Stylus

Scott, Raymond: Manhattan Research Inc. Dbl CD and Book Scott, Raymond: Manhattan Research Inc. Dbl CD and Book
Price: $26.00

2 CDs in a hard bound 148 page (colour) book, beautifully illustrated and laid out, well documented. What to say about this extraordinary document? Raymond Scott, best known as a bandleader and composer whose quintet performed fast and furious pieces - many of which found their way into Bugs Bunny cartoons - was also an inventor and pioneer of electronic instruments (Sequencers, Bass line Generator, Elektronium, Clavivox, Bandito the bongo artist), ran electronic R&D for Motown and produced a significant amount of electronic music for soundtracks, commercials, demonstration purposes - and for the hell of it. Many of the pieces painstakingly assembled here have never been heard outside Scott's studios. Musical content. Stranger than Negativland, stranger than fiction are the real commercial's of the late 50's and early 60's that were the bread and butter work of Manhattan Research, making much of this collection more post modern than post modern. I mean some of these pieces are deeply odd, others breathtakingly kitschy. And so much great copy-writing. A minute is the average length. Sometimes Raymond talks about the pieces (from lectures). It says a lot about the "future" as conceived in the late 50's and early 60's. Then there are demonstration recordings, work tapes and experimental extracts featuring some of RS's many invented electronic instruments (he designed the first sequencer in 1960 - way ahead of the game - which like another great pioneer, Les Paul, he first kept to himself. Then there are short film soundtracks and instrumental pieces - in the Forbidden Planet vein (or even electro-poppy) rather than art-electronic, but still using state of the art technology and techniques. So much that seems contemporary is already stated here, and sometimes what is achieved is up to and beyond any art electronics of the period. Still the approach is always popular, if sometimes warped. This collection hits on so many levels- musical, experimental, sociological, historical that it is impossible to exaggerate it's importance. And it makes great listening. The book is superb and the research impressive. This is a thing of beauty, of history and of strangeness. It's not stunning but it is incomparable- a glimpse into one eccentric life. Priceless. And cheap.

Shea, David: Book of Scenes Shea, David: Book of Scenes
Price: $14.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"The Book of Scenes is a collection of pieces for Viola and Piano. Each piece is a single scene and scored on a single page and places the players and the instrument in different situations and relationships to each other and sampled recordings of themselves as well as the electronic environment the duo perform in. The work can be played in any order and the sequence is chosen before hand by the the players. The scenes explore solo and duo playing, and musical roles inside of shifting contexts many related to visual references, films and iconic memories. This record presents Book I the first 29 pieces performed live with some scenes constructed electronically from samples and memories of other scenes. Many of the sections are visual in nature, for example where the alto player bows his instrument while the pianist places his hands on the viola neck and chooses the notes to be played followed by the alto player placing his hands inside the piano to mute the pianist notes as well as a scene where the players are blindfolded. These scenes have been replaced by electronic manipulations of the live performance. The result is a flow of relationships and scored or scripted scenes living between the orchestration of the acoustic instruments and the electronic characters they engage with".-Sub Rosa
