AMM : At The Roundhouse AMM : At The Roundhouse

Price: $13.99

"The International Carnival of Experimental Sound, or ICES '72 for short, was an ambitious festival sprung from the mind of Harvey 'Job' Matusow (1926-2002). Jumping off from his associations with the influential Source magazine, Harvey brought together over 300 artists from more than 21 countries to perform in London, England over the course of two weeks in August of 1972. Based on the theme of Myth, Magic Madness and Mysticism, he assembled an amazing diversity of performers working in diverse range of audio-visual arts. Encompassing happenings, films, dance, a train ride, and the phantom soft pool table, the focus was on sound -- specifically that of artists who were both composers and performers. Most of the concerts were held at The Roundhouse, a cavernous structure that was formerly a railroad engine house. Now, for the first time in 30 years, these recordings can be heard. This first CD in a series documenting the festival features the complete concert given by legendary free improvising group AMM. Represented here by Eddie Prevost and Lou Gare, they offer up powerful explosions of saxophone and drums punctuated with their famous AMM silences. This is the first time this material is available, aside from two short excerpts were published as the only 7" release on Evan Parker and Derek Bailey's Incus Records (and a very rare and desirable record that has become)." -Forced Exposure

ART BEARS: REVISITED ART BEARS: REVISITED
Code:6908
Price: $25.95
Quantity in Basket: none
As the years passed and technology marched on, Art Bears decided to let other artists to remix the three original albums. On the 3 disks referred to as "REVISITED" in this box, we are treated to how others perceive the importance of the Art Bears' back catalog by their own standards in the current studio world, using the resurrected master tapes as a starting point. In all cases the work is as radical today as it was when the band first offered it up a quarter of a century ago. Features Bob Drake, Stephan Tickmayer, Jon Rose, Christian Marclay Thomas Dimuzio, Musci-Venosta, Lars Pedersen (When), Warrick Swinney (The Kalahari Surfers), Biota, The Residents, Otomo Yoshida, and, well....too many more to mention here. You get the idea. It harkens the Art Bears trilogy into a new era of technology, aesthetic and sound, all of which had yet to be introduced back when the original albums were made. Also on these disks are previously unreleased concert recordings, a reissue of the "Collapse" 45 rpm (from Ralph Records), a newly completed piece by the band aptly called," Rebirth" (which was hitherto a poem in the coveted "Wintersongs" book), "All Hail" from the Recommended Sampler, and the extremely rare live version of "Coda to Man and Boy" from the Cantu recording.

Agitation Free: Last Agitation Free: Last
Code:6817
Price: $17.95

"According to me "Last" is one of the most recommended live albums recorded in the history of prog . Performed during two concerts (one in 1973 and the other in 1974), the tracks deliver long improvisational & instrumental pieces, perfectly executed by very talented musicians who really get the feeling and who know how to play together. "Last" is an unforgotten musical experience which leads you in a totally free form rock, developing spacey and dreamy soundscapes, combining excellent guitars duet to experimental 'electronic' arrangements. There's of course similarities to Ashra tempel 'cosmic' and ambitious first releases but it doesn't replace the solid, perpetual jam sessions formidably operated, technically and emotionally superior than "Malecsh" and "Second"!" - Phillipe Blache

Agitation Free was founded 1969 in Berlin and were known for a complex instrumental progressive rock with spacey sounds, a mixture of Popol Vuh and the early Pink Floyd. Yet, the style of Agitation Free was real and one filled with cosmic and ethnic elements and first of all due to the genius inventions and the great talent of its musicians, one played with a lot of electronic, keyboards, two guitars, drums but less vocals. The first LP of Agitation Free was released in 1972 on Vertigo and is back now as an official reissue on CD.

Antheil, George: Dreams, Piano Concerto No. 2 Serenade No.2 Antheil, George: Dreams, Piano Concerto No. 2 Serenade No.2
Code:6883
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"A concert pianist and vanguard composer, George Antheil (1900-1959) became known as the 'Bad Boy of Music.' The ultimate American in Paris, Antheil was an avant-garde provocateur of the first order who made his name composing iconoclastic compositions: the loudest and brashest classical music of his time. But this album gives us three new performances -- two of them world-premiere recordings -- which reveal another, forgotten side of Antheil: the incurable romantic. Written in 1926, after the height of Antheil's radical period, the 'Piano Concerto No. 2' is an experiment in classical form. The work contains the same sudden juxtapositions and abrupt contrasts of mood as his futurist music. But the excesses of his recent ballet mécanique (written for 16 player pianos!) are compensated for by an almost spare, baroque orchestration and motifs that draw on Bach as much as on Stravinsky. In three movements, Antheil employs a more restrained but still exuberant style. The beautifully meditative slow movement is followed by a virtuosic and compelling toccata. Each movement ends on an overtly Bachian cadence, most obvious in the sweetly naive coda of the final movement. The ballet 'Dreams' (1935) had a prior existence in Paris. It was called 'Les Songes,' and Darius Milhaud wrote the original music in 1933, later discarded in favor of Antheil's score. Antheil plays sarcastically with contradictions: waltz vs. march; folk song vs. orchestral romanticism. This is marvelous ballet music, and the unexpected structural and melodic changes keep us on the edge of our seat: amused and entertained. The lack of a formal structure does not hamper Antheil; he seemed to thrive on it, both in this piece, and in many others he wrote. Despite the cut-and-paste exoticism and the predictable thematic material, this music sounds appealingly American -- folksy, populist, and engaging. Antheil's brilliant orchestration makes these works shine. Not much is known about the genesis of the 'Serenade No. 2' (1948). As the work neared completion, Antheil wrote, the 'Serenade' '...is as important, for me, as a new symphony; indeed, it can be played by a major symphony orchestra.' It's a beautifully orchestrated, lush work. Both serenades are in three movements -- the first is for strings alone while the second adds a wind section and a percussionist." -Forced Exposure

Barrett, Syd: Barrett Barrett, Syd: Barrett
Code:6555
Price: $18.00
Quantity in Basket: none
"UK version (with bonus tracks not found on the domestic US version), of the 2nd Syd Barrett solo album. Originally released in November 1970 on Harvest. Barrett was the second and final studio album of new material released by former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett. 'Shortly after releasing his first album, The Madcap Laughs, Barrett appeared on John Peel's Top Gear radio show where he presented only one song from the newly released album. Two days later, he began working on his second album in the Abbey Road Studios, this time with Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Rick Wright as producers and musicians. The main aim for the Barrett sessions was to give Syd the structure and focus many felt was missing during the long and unwieldy sessions for The Madcap Laughs. Thus, the sessions were more efficiently run -- with much unreleased material recorded -- and the album was finished in far less time than it took to complete The Madcap Laughs. In addition, with the unpredictability and at times despairing nature of Madcap greatly decreased, the rigid format of the new sessions ended up giving Barrett a less inventive flavor, as a result. Nonetheless, Barrett does indeed have some memorable songs, least of all 'Baby Lemonade,' 'Dominoes' and 'Gigolo Aunt,' all of which are as well known to Barrett fans as 'See Emily Play' and 'Astronomy Domine.' Although not generally as highly regarded as The Madcap Laughs, Barrett -- of which, the cover was painted by Syd himself -- is still a much-prized recording from its maker. Includes seven bonus tracks including: 'Baby Lemonade (Take 1),' 'Waving My Arms In The Air (Take 1),' 'I Never Lied To You (Take 1),' 'Love Song (Take 1),' 'Dominoes (Take 1),' 'Dominoes (Take 2),' 'It Is Obvious (Take 2).'" -Forced Exposure

Code:6556
Price: $18.50

"UK version (with bonus tracks not found on the domestic US version), of the first Syd Barrett solo album. Originally released on Harvest in January 1970. 'During February 1968, Dave Gilmour had been drafted into The Pink Floyd and for a brief time they existed as a 5-piece. Soon, however, rumours circulated that Syd Barrett would be taking on a 'Brian Wilson' role, writing and recording material 'behind the scenes.' But by April it was clear that he had been ousted completely. Within a month of his axing, Barrett was back in Abbey Road. With his manager Pete Jenner as producer, Barrett began his solo career. Blending angular, riveting guitar-work and jaunty improvisation with more fragile and enchanting pieces, Barrett composed in a suitably elegiac fashion. Later in the recording process, Gilmour and Roger Waters would aid in co-production, shepherding Barrett through many takes and re-takes of what finally gelled as his most skilled and coherent solo record. Includes six bonus tracks including 'Octopus (Takes 1&2)', 'It's No Good Trying (Take 5)', 'Love You (Take 1)', 'Love You (Take 3)', 'She Took A Long Cold Look At Me (Take 4)', Golden Hair (Take 5)'." -Forced Exposure

Belleli, Avi: Strawberry Cream And Gunpowder Belleli, Avi: Strawberry Cream And Gunpowder
Code:6780
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Born in 1963, Avi Belleli is one of the Middle East's most notable and successful composers. He is best known as the leader, songwriter, vocalist and bass player for the Tel Aviv-based rock band, The Tractor's Revenge, who have made seven albums on Israeli labels, most of which have gone Gold. Despite massive success as a commercial personality, Belleli has never turned his back on the more artistic and progressive aspects of his endeavors. "Strawberry Cream and Gunpowder" is, by Israeli standards, a radical recording of music for a dance piece by the same name by the young choreographer, Yasmeen Goder. The performance, (which features Belelli playing live on stage amongst the dancers) has already enjoyed several critically acclaimed runs in Europe, Japan, Israel and New York. The project is influenced by recent events in the Middle East, and with regards to the global terror atmosphere in general, but in more of a psychological than political way: It questions the connections between power and fear, sex and control, gender issues and personal crisis, whilst examining ways by which individuals can learn to cope with sudden, radical (and sometimes horrifying) changes in their lives.

Brainticket: Cottonwoodhill Brainticket: Cottonwoodhill
Code:6631
Price: $18.00

""Reissue of one of the essential early 70s psychedelic freak-out albums, first issued by the Hallelujah label in Switzerland in 1971. Licensed to German Bellaphone soon thereafter, this is generally considered one of the peak Krautrock experiences, despite its Swiss origins. Bellaphone did a poor quality CD issue in 1989, and there was also a bootleg version on 'Bellgro' -- both of those are long o/p. This new CD, legitimately reissued by the original Swiss manufacturer -- Phonag Records, offers improved sound & reproduces the fantastic swirl cover. At this point in time, Brainticket were made up of: Joel Vandroogenbroeck (organ, flute), Ron Bryer (guitar), Werni Frohlich (bass), Coismo Lampis (drums), Wolfgang Paap (tabla), Dawn Muir (voice) & Hellmuth Kolbe (potentiometers, generators and soundeffects). This is their first album (sometimes referred to as 'self-title') and is quite different and more radical than anything else in their discography. It features an outlandish churning groove of a sound (vaguely comparable to Can or Funkadelic at their most tweaked), is deeply immersed in LSD mythology and is littered with electronic effects and collage-like elements leading towards the cover's warning: 'Listen to the first recordings of this LSD/Hashish/Fixy/Jointy sound. Take a trip to your inner light. See the hallucinations of reality rise out of the groove. You've got your Brainticket now!' -Forced Exposure

Camberwell Now: All's Well Camberwell Now: All's Well
Code:6911
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
This definitive edition collects the entire released output of Camberwell Now (two EPs and an LP), newly re-mastered by the band and repackaged with full notes, lyrics, additional photographs and artwork. Chronologically, Camberwell Now immediately succeeded This Heat, Charles Hayward continuing to work with This Heat's last bassist Trefor Goronwy, and the two of them joining forces with Stephen Rickard who, for the new band, designed his unique 'cassette switchboard', a kind of proto-sampler - though that's not the half of it (Steve's article fully explaining the device is reprinted in the new, expanded booklet that comes with the CD).

Musically, Camberwell both followed and departed from the style of This Heat. Formally and gesturally there are common elements, but there is far greater transparency and the sound palette is quite different: the music is more placed than grown, as the slow accumulation and evolution of material in This Heat gives way to a more immediate and orderly development of the material in Camberwell Now. The songs - nostalgic, scary, and quietly desperate - peer into the future to find harbour but confront only fragments of ruin.

Einsturzende Neubauten was one of the key pioneers of industrial music. Known for their avant-garde methods, Einsturzende Neubauten have used jackhammers, drills, chainsaws, junk metal, tapes and amplified guitar noise and a multitude of found sounds over the past twenty years to make music. Much more than a spectacle of disaster and ruin, Neubauten's great and various noises eroticize de-sensitized and dead zones of contemporary life. Surprisingly, given their extraordinary visual spectacle, Liebeslieder is the first proper Einstürzende Neubauten documentary. Commissioned by the German WDR TV's architecture division, it charts their beginnings in a hole beneath an Autobahn overpass in Berlin, where guiding spirit Blixa Bargeld and NU Unruh made music by hurtling themselves at its metal walls. It takes you through the early Untergang years, when they picked up momentum -- and members FM Einheit, Alex Hacke and Mark Chung -- through a seemingly perverse celebration of collapse and decline. Using interviews, concert material and often rare film footage, Liebeslieder plots their spreading influence around the world, their blitzes on moribund British and American music scenes, and their outings as teen idols in Tokyo. The documentary also highlights their theatre work with Peter Zadek, Heine Müller, Japanese Butoh dancers, Erich Wonder and La La La Human Steps. On top of this Liebeslieder includes concert footage from their 1993 tour and, in full, their first ever music videos 'Interim' and 'Blume.' After Einstürzende Neubauten, everything else is silence. -Forced Exposure

"Etron Fou were one of the premier French avant/progressive bands from 1974-1986, & a founding member of R.I.O. This reissues the Etron's 1st album, from early 1977. This is certainly their most dada/out album, and I have a real soft spot for it in my heart, but I wouldn't recommend you start here unless your interest is more in general French craziness than in the superb musicality that came later. Excellent packaging with rare photos and great sound". -Cuneiform

"Live at the Flux New Music Festival in Edinburgh. Three weeks of festival, theatre, pantomime, experimental arts and music. In amongst these, Faust: A legend for the connoisseur, with constantly changing sound experiments over the past 25 years. Faust mixes industrial noise with tattered sounds, jazzy harmonies and rock rhythms. Unfettered and minimalist. A concert at a venue resembling a low, hot cave. There is a huge metal sheet in front of the stage beyond the reach of the audience. Guardian: '... an alarming, emotionally exhausting and strangely uplifting ritual and probably the most intense live theatre of the Edinburgh Fringe. Worth selling your soul for, in fact!' "Faust, the legendary Krautrock band, is back again In their 31st year they are releasing a remix album, proving once again their timeless importance to the international music scene. This album is a collection of remixes of most tracks from Faust´s spectacular masterpiece Ravvivando, released in 1999. Take your time listening to it, and you will get lost in these amazing soundscapes and more dancefloor-tracks of Freispiel. As you might know, musical borders and limits do not exist in the fantastic sound world of Faust. The knowledge about this first Faust-principle was a great challenge for the participating artists of Freispiel. The wide diversity of sounds spans from The Resident's work to the infectious dance grooves by the Sofa Surfers and Soft Cell to deconstructed versions by people like Funkstoerung and Howie B. You will also fall in love with the final track the Canadian band Dead Voices On Air (who had been involved with the Can-solo-projects) made of the Faust-song 'Du weißt schon'. Freispielshows Faust in a complete new framework and is a must for any serious record collector and the urban club-scene of many open-minded people. Wherever you go, in the tube, in the cafe, on the street under water...you will hear the sound of Faust since all sound is potential music, music like Faust´s, limitless.. So the unlimited world around us is both the laboratory and the stage for this outstanding German band." -Forced Exposure

"Like a hidden relic from the far side of the Harry Smith catalog, these early 1960s recordings are a splendid collection of High lonesome hillbilly fiddle and ukulele instrumentals that are surely Henry Flynt's most articulated statements to date of his honest to god, true to life affinity and love for that dry earth choogaloo upper mountain lower boogaloo foot stomping folk music. Standouts include the acid fried 13th Floor Elevators-ish 'Sky Turned Red' and the 15 plus minute lazy zen epic hum and strum album closer, 'Blue Sky, Highway and Tyme'. Filmed at Golders Green Hippodrome, Jan. 5th, 1978
BBC Broadcast Jan. 21st, 1978

OK, I'm a sucker for this band's later period, when they were loud & rambunctious, and turned their backs on the pretentious aspects of early 70's Progressive Rock. This is the best sounding, best filmed, and best edited Gentle Giant concert available to date. They do play a lot of their earlier, contrapuntal stuff (which should thrill their long-standing fan base), but they approach it more like The Yardbirds wailing out "Train Kept A-Rollin" than one might imagine. The tempos kick as the band works up a sweat, and gives us a glimpse of where Rock 'N Roll should have gone in the 80's. After the concert we're treated to 6 Gentle Giant "rock videos" : Interview, I Lost My Head and Give it Back - plus 3 others from "Giant For A Day". Until now, these were legendary films that had hardly seen the light of day.

There are 2 additional live videos from 1974 on disc 1: "Excerpts From Octopus" (from The Old Grey Whistle Test, April 1976, which is of good quality, though not quite up to par with the main concert footage), and some super-8, hand held footage from the "In A Glass House" era . The latter doesn't do the music justice, but the band is well-known these days (26 years after their demise) as an organization that will give the public their due money's worth, warts and all. If you're a fan, you'll probably enjoy this addition, as it can have you reminiscing about a time when it was cool to be freaky - before the real sickness and schlock set in to Rock 'N Roll. Also on the first disc: Two galleries of Gentle Giant still photos from guitarist Gary Green's private collection.

Disc 2 is the audio of the Golders Green concert footage and is, to my ears, an improvement upon the previously released CD form, "Gentle Giant In Concert". This was the band's 2nd genuine live album, posthumously released in the 90's , now out-of-print.

I suppose this set could be an embarrassment of riches for some, and a guilty pleasure for others. For me it's both: To regain my composure, and get over the compunction of enjoying it so thoroughly after the first sitting, I had merely to remember where I'd come from.

A long and extraordinarily fruitful partnership started here - continuing through the Sogennantes Linksradikales Blasorchester - where Alfred and Heiner picked up Christoph Anders, the three of whom then went on to co-found Cassiber, with Chris Cutler. A critical success in its own time, this duo recorded two more CDs before parting company, each more musically open than its predecessor. These first two sorties are a kind of jazz-inflected, punk-inflected, highly spirited and imaginative – series of adapted Hanns Eisler compositions - as well as some original pieces by the duo itself, who between them cover a lot of instruments, and combinations of instruments, and – ah youth – are never less than hurling themselves into their performances. Heiner went on, after Cassiber, to become one of Germany's leading music-theatre writer and directors, as well as composing for the ensemble modern, orchestras and opera companies (he had an orchestra premiere to mark the opening of the Festival Hall complex in London on July 12th). Alfred went on to form several other bands, including Gestalt et Jive before relocating to Seoul in Korea, where he now lives and works. He is currently part of Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Orchestra. Both original LPs have been re-mastered for this release by Bob Drake.

To celebrate Sofia Gubaidulina's 75th birthday, Wergo ofers this new CD of the composer's chamber music. Joining Julius Berger and Stefan Hussong, two well-known interpreters of new music, are Sofia Gubaidulina and her colleague, Viktor Suslin. In Am Rande des Abgrunds Gubaidulina and Suslin play aquaphones -- instruments which resemble water-filled censers with strange decorations. Their sound is rich in overtones and quite unusual, and contrasts sharply with the shimmering sound of the strings. These unusual instruments are an expression of the composer's eagerness to experiment, actively and consciously grappling with the sound worlds of the cultures of Africa and East Asia. --Forced Exposure

The 5 full-length discs in Box 1 cover Henry Cow's career from the pre-Virgin Records days up to roughly 1975. These are all previously unreleased recordings, some live, some demo, some studio, all sonically enhanced by Bob Drake's painstaking re-mastering. We are treated to everything from early BBC sessions to somewhat later live improvisations, alternate recordings with Robert Wyatt, to the full 18 minute version of "With the Yellow Moon And Half Star" (The Bacchae). There are many compositions and improvisations new to anyone who only knows the official releases; The disks also document a number of one-off projects and events and - where different or remarkable enough to justify inclusion - live versions of parts of the LP repertoire. The hefty, 60-page booklet is chock-full of historic information and exclusive photos. The 4 full-length CD's + 1 DVD in Box 2 cover the Cow's career from roughly 1976 to the band's demise, with an emphasis on the later era. Nobody knew that this 75-minute concert broadcast of the band existed, so the DVD is a real boon, and has spectacular versions of "Beautiful As The Moon", "Living In The Heart Of The Beast", "March", "Erk Gah", "No More Songs" and a great, improvisational piece. The music discs are also excellent, and include as highlights the original version of "Joan", as well as a 12 minute, hitherto unreleased piece by Lindsay Cooper, and great versions of "Erk Gah and "Viva Pa Ubu". There's also some immaculate improvising, including a 17 minute foray from the original RIO Festival, and Fred's "Awake Against Sleep" from the Western Culture sessions - and all that's just the tip of the iceberg. The hefty, 60-page booklet is chock-full of historic information and exclusive photos. And everything has been carefully transferred and re-mastered by Bob Drake to the best audio quality that current technology allows without interference or tampering.

Henry Cow: Stockholm & Goteborg Henry Cow: Stockholm & Goteborg
Code:7608
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
This is the first new release in 30 years from this legendary audience-splitting British group, and the first featuring Georgina Born, the group's bassist from 1976-78. Remixed and re-mastered from the original Swedish radio tapes. Henry Cow were never going to fit in. Their compositions were way too composed and their improvising was way too improvised - a tendency that only got more extreme as time went on, as these recordings from 1976 and 1977 demonstrate. Stockholm and Goteborg fills in some of the missing history between In Praise of Learning (1975) and Western Culture (1978) and offers music that has not been heard on record until now. First is Tim Hodgkinson's late and fiendishly complicated epic composition 'Erk Gah' (a working title), that took many months of sweat to learn and resolutely eschews any hint of riff, solo or modular assembly. At the other extreme are the two wide-ranging improvisations built around heady extended instrumental techniques, aleatorics, quotations, more-or-less randomly inserted prepared materials and a blithe disregard for genre rules. Between, constantly shifting ground, are a straight-ahead version of Phil Ochs' No more Songs (one of only two covers ever performed by the band), an unreleased composition by Fred Frith, and a version of the Ottawa Song: a typical live set from that period. Finally, Stockholm is a snapshot of a band of exceptional talents having fun. And it reflects what the studio albums could not - that Henry Cow's natural habitat was the stage - and the real-time pressure of public performance - because it was there that the music could live and breathe. And evolve.

John Surman: Way Back When John Surman: Way Back When
Code:5960
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"This is a truly stupendous archival find, with broad appeal to both jazz and early fusion fans. This never before released album was recorded on October 7th, 1969 by John Surman and British jazz superstars. It is a mix between the vibrancy of late 60's uk jazz and spacey early electric jazz/rock ala 'In A Silent Way'; listening to this album, you can hear that the fusion explosion is on the cusp of happening. Soprano/baritone saxophonist John Surman is one of the UK's best known jazzmen, having released 8 albums under his own name between 1968 - 1974 for mainstream labels such as Deram and Island. He was a member of John McLaughlin's final UK-based group, recording John's famous first solo album, Extrapolation with him in 1969, six months before recording Way Back When. Since the late 1970's, he has mostly recorded for the ECM label, recording dozens of albums as either the leader or as a sideman. 'In mid-October, 1969, I left the UK to meet up with bassist Barre Phillips and drummer Stu Martin to begin working with them as 'The Trio'. Before I left however, a few close friends and I held a sort of 'farewell' session in Tangerine Studios in London. On hand were drummer John Marshall, electric pianist John Taylor and Brian Odgers on bass guitar - later Mike Osborne appeared with his alto and joined us. Shortly after I left England, the studios closed down and, although a few test pressings were made, the original tapes got lost in the general confusion. Much to my surprise the masters had survived and were uncovered in 2003...what you are hearing accurately reflects the sound of the sixties...it offers genuine insight into some of the musical directions that were being explored at the end of that swinging decade in the UK.'-John Surman". -Cuneiform

This is probably Albert's least recognized recording. That's a shame because, like everything he's released, it's a gem. This disk is more aligned to his mid-period work (like Ma Vie Avec Elle, or Sports & Percussion) than his earlier, more clearly whacked material. Indeed, much of this disc was culled from his mid-period, showing off his then newly mature side of composition. Like Ma Vie or Sports, the counterpoint is still there, only a bit more obfuscated than before: it can mostly be noticed in subtle instances where sounds are expertly manipulated thru the stereo spectrum. The recording/sound is great, and while I wouldn't suggest this as a starting point for the uninitiated, it is truly a wonderful disc.

"Formed by drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt after he left the pioneering UK jazz/rock Soft Machine in 1971. By early 1972, the band conisted of Robert, guitarist Phil Miller, bassist Bill MacCormick & electric pianist Dave MacRae. The band was exceedingly active for a band that lasted less than one year, recording two albums and playing dozens of shows throughout Europe. In 2001, Cuneiform released Smoke Signals, a collection of unreleased performances. The band was so pleased with that album that when one of the members came across a forgotten live show on tape - identified simply as 'March, 1972', they immediately contacted us, and this album is the result. Recorded live in Europe 3/72, shortly after Dave MacRae became the keyboardist, this includes the basic repertoire that the band would perform during their lifetime, with a few surprises thrown in. The sound is surprisingly superb for a live show of this vintage, and once again Tom Recchion has come up with a charming cover. 'Great sound, great artwork - so thanks once again.' -Robert Wyatt" -Cuneiform

Smoke Signals compiles all previously unreleased performances - selected & sequenced by Robert Wyatt biographer Mike King - from the band's most intense gigging period. The set list is mostly drawn from Little Red Record, but the way the band performed the pieces live is quite different from the heavily overdubbed versions found on the studio disc. Despite their very short lifetime, Mole developed an individual sound based on the players idiosyncratic musical styles, that was a unique take on fusion and Canterbury musics. Moore, R. Stevie: Phonography Moore, R. Stevie: Phonography
Code:7711
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none

"Phonography was Stevie's first LP release, and an out-of-the-blue masterpiece: terminally idiosyncratic but with all the compositional qualities of great pop. A gifted songwriter, R Stevie (son of Bob Moore, Elvis' bassist) grew up and was steeped in Nashville's countrypolitanism; but, as a recidivist rebel, he inevitably slipped into strange byways, following his own, unique path into celebrated obscurity - as this strange and compelling record attests.

Hans Arp said, 'My paintings are like fingernails: they keep growing and I keep cutting them off'. R Stevie's songs seem to follow the same rule. They create worlds, tell stories, trifle wantonly with form, harmony, structure and execution, and throw off passages of casual brilliance on the way. Lo-fi is integral to its purpose. You can't pay to get a sound like that.

So, when nobody seemed to want to keep Phonography in print, ReR Megacorp were happy to oblige - it's history. We took the opportunity to re-master and restore it to its original form."

"Since their demise in 1981, The Muffins have been generally acknowledged as one of the finest (and one of the most unsung) U.S. proponents of progressive/new music. During their lifetime, The Muffins were never less than amazing, and with the reissues on CD of their back catalog, their reputation only grew. In a very happy occurance, all four members of the band reformed in 1998 and began developing a new repertoire and performing concerts. In a world glutted with half-baked reformations by bands looking to cash in on past glories, Bandwidth is the genuine article; a reformation of all the original members who who have gotten together not for money, but because they miss what they had done together in the past and who feel that they still have something to say. Bandwidth is very recognizably the work of The Muffins; you can hear elements of both Manna/Mirage and <185> here, as well as lots of new elements". -Cuneiform

"It is an all-too-rare occurrence for a band, throughout its career, to create music that continually pushes the envelope and transforms the landscape. It is an even rarer occurrence for such a band to reunite after a long separation, and embark on a second musical career that proves as innovative as the first. For The Muffins, lightning has struck twice. In 1998, The Muffins reformed with all four members, and it proved to be the genuine article. Double Negative is The Muffins' 2nd studio recording released since reforming and possibly the most ambitious work of their career. Featuring 75 minutes of music spread over 17 songs, Double Negative is The Muffins' most compositionally diverse work, featuring pieces that vary in style and tone greatly, but which are always theirs (although they might fool you for a bit here and there!). The Muffins have long been noted for the way they craft memorable themes with adventurous musical structures and this is no exception. In addition, it is the band's most instrumentally rich work, featuring an unprecedented number of musical guest appearances. Two principal members of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott, play sax on several tracks, while longtime Muffins contributor, Doug Elliott, contributes excellent trombone parts to half the pieces and string players also contribute". -Cuneiform

"This marks the first time that this version of this classic Canterbury group (Alan Gowen, John Greaves, Phil Miller, Pip Pyle) has been documented on record. This edition of the band strove towards a more stretched-out, free-er approach. As Phil remembers it, 'Basically, we did less writing and more playing.' Indeed, this version of National Health did more gigging that any other lineup of the band, but they never released any recordings until now. Recorded at two different shows in 1979 - including one show that features the addition of guest guitarist Alain Eckert (Art Zoyd) - the majority of the compositions on Playtime cannot be found on any other National Health recording. It includes a 16 page booklet with liner notes by Aymeric Leroy, which tells the story of this last period of the band. Illustrated with rare photos, interviews and comments with all surviving members of the band, this is a fantastic and unexpected document 20 years later, of a much loved band". -Cuneiform

New York Art Quartet : Old Stuff New York Art Quartet : Old Stuff
Code:7747
Price: $15.95

"This release is truly a remarkable archival find! Formed in the summer of 1964, although the New York Art Quartet existed for barely a year and a half, great interest remains in their work. They consisted of co-leaders John Tchicai (alto sax), who participated in John Coltrane's ground-breaking Ascension album and Roswell Rudd (trombone), considered to be the first free-jazz trombonist, along with bassist Don Moore and drummer Milford Graves. The band participated in the legendary "October Revolution in Jazz", which journalist Bill Shoemaker called, "Arguably the most seminal jazz concert series ever held...it was a comprehensive four-day survey of jazz's cutting edge.... It marked the beginning of the Golden Era of do-it-yourself jazz culture in the U.S." The New York Art Quartet recorded their self-titled first album for ESP and Tchicai went back to his homeland of Denmark to scout out work for the group. Only Rudd was able to join him, so the pair enlisted Copenhagen bassist Finn von Eyben and South African drummer Louis Moholo, who had very recently left South Africa with the Blue Notes; this is one of his earliest recordings. This lineup of the New York Art Quartet performed two concerts in Copenhagen in October, 1965, which is where these recordings were made.Released on the 45th anniversary of the October Revolution, this historic issue features all previously unheard and unreleased recordings of brilliant and firey musical interplay that have really great, high quality, period live sound. In the 8 page booklet are never-before seen photos and a short, informative essay by writer Jason Weiss, who produced this album."" --Cuneiform"

"As the conflicts and divisions in American society deepened in the mid-'60s, Phil Ochs sharpened his songwriting pen on 1965's 'I Ain't Marching Anymore' to deliver some of the most passionate and pointed protest songs of the decade. WIth topics ranging from American militarism, civil rights, labor struggles and the Vietnam War, the album may sound dated...or maybe not. Includes 'I Ain't Marching Anymore; In the Heat of the Summer; Draft Dodger Rag; That's What I Want to Hear; That Was the President; Iron Lady; The Highwayman; Links on the Chain; Hills of West Virginia; The Men Behind the Guns; Talking Birmingham Jam; Ballad of the Carpenter; Days of Decision', and 'Here's to the State of Mississippi'". -Collector's Choice Music

Partch, Harry: Collection Vol. 1 Partch, Harry: Collection Vol. 1
Code:6538
Price: $17.50
Quantity in Basket: none
"This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the 'third period' of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with 'the intrinsic music of spoken words' that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the 'music-dance drama' King Oedipus (1951) -- the culmination of his 'spoken word' manner -- to the 'dance satire' The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a 'minor adventure in rhythm,' is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments." -Forced Exposure

"2005 remaster, from original mono master tapes (recorded in 1957). 'The Bewitched' was Partch's first work solely intended for dance (and mime-dance at that; he was not overly enamored in his lifetime of so-called 'modern dance'). Drawing heavily from his deep affection for the music-theatrical performance traditions of Greek theater, as well as those from Africa, Bali, and Chinese opera, Partch conceived of a contemporary American music ritual-theater where musicians not only play, but also function at times as movers-singers-actors. Such is the case of The Bewitched, where the instruments are the set, in front of (and around) which dancers 'dance,' but where the onstage musicians also move and sing. Partch's masterpiece has been lovingly remastered from the original mono masters and the 24-page booklet includes never-before-published photographs from productions of The Bewitched. This is the definitive document of this very important work.' 'The Bewitched is in the tradition of world-wide ritual theatre. It is the opposite of specialized. I conceived and wrote it in California in the period 1952-55, following the several performances of my version of Sophocles' Oedipus. In spirit, if not wholly in content, it is a satyr-play. It is a seeking for release --through satire, whimsy, magic, ribaldry -- from the catharsis of tragedy. It is an essay toward a miraculous abeyance of civilized rigidity, in the feeling that the modern spirit might thereby find some ancient and magical sense of rebirth. Each of the 12 scenes is a theatrical unfolding of nakedness, a psychological strip-tease, or -- a diametric reversal, which has the effect of underlining the complementary character, the strange affinity, of seeming opposites.' -- Harry Partch." -Forced Exposure

Samla Mammas Manna: Klossa Knapitatet Samla Mammas Manna: Klossa Knapitatet
Code:4220
Price: $17.95

"Klossa Knapitet was Sweden's eclectic group The Samla's third album released. This is one very wild album incorporating elements of Scandinavian folk music, pop, fusion, as well as humor, and group improvisation. When the band gets going it will remind you very much of fusion induced Miles Davis (minus the trumpet). Generally speaking this album is upbeat, full of rollicking piano and guitar, melodic in a sing-song kinda way, and a rather zainy almost slap-stick humor tossed in. Instrumentally this album is a real stonker with guitar, piano, bass, and drums, with occasional accordion and voices, and other assorted noisemakers. The Samlas were a solid mix of musicians and fans of the Flower Kings will recognize the inclusion of Mr. Hasse Bruninsson on the drums and percussion. As far as originality goes this album stands all on its own with their "ever-shifting" musical prowess and deliver what I will coin "polka-prog" with heavy doses of Miles Davis and Frank ZAPPA throughout. Overall, [this is] an amazing recording sure to please all fans of fusion/prog." --J.Unger

Soft Machine: Backwards Soft Machine: Backwards
Code:6033
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"The fourth in our Soft Machine archival series. Backwards is comprised of recordings from three different and interesting eras of the band: First on the CD is a recording of the quartet from May, 1970, made just about the time that the band had finished recording their Third album. The recording is mono, but the sonic quality is superb; this may be the single finest recording of the quartet version of the band, surpasing even their official studio relases. Next is two performances from November, 1969, featuring the septet version of Soft Machine. Since the only other available material by this version of the band is 20' of BBC recordings, this is an invaluable addition to the band's recorded legacy. Lastly there is Robert Wyatt's original demo of 'Moon In June', which would eventually appear on Third. The first half of this demo version was recorded in the USA in the fall of 1968, after Soft Machine had disbanded after their 2nd US tour, but before the band reformed for their 2nd album. Then, in 1969, the trio version of Soft Machine recorded the ending to their piece, and spliced on the final half". -Cuneiform

"The Soft Machine line-up of Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper, John Marshall and Mike Ratledge lasted under half a year and recorded just one half of an album (side two of '5'). Live in Paris is a rare recording of this quartet during that lineup's final days; Dean left Soft Machine later that month. It is also a special, rare example of a Soft Machine concert recorded and released in its entirety. Live in Paris shows Soft Machine playing in top form. The tracklisting consists of works from 'Third' and '5' in often significantly different versions, as well as several piece not recorded elsewhere. This excellent quality release - formerly released as 'Live In France' on another label - is taken from the less than 2 dozen shows performed by this version of the band, and shows that despite such a short life, that this version of the quartet definitely had their own style and sound". -Cuneiform

Soft Machine: Middle Earth Masters Soft Machine: Middle Earth Masters
Code:6825
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"In following the path of seminal British group Soft Machine, there seems to be little to link its mid-1960s emergence as a psychedelic avant-pop band to its guitar-centric fusion at the end of the 1970s. But every evolutionary step revealed a band evolving from one incarnation to the next in logical increments. Middle Earth Masters, culled from three performances from the fall of 1967 through the same time a year later, shows that the building blocks for the classic 1970-72 lineup (keyboardist Mike Ratledge, drummer/ vocalist Robert Wyatt, bassist Hugh Hopper and saxophonist Elton Dean) were already in place, albeit in a significantly different setting... There are moments of pure pop, most notably Ayers' "Clarence in Wonderland" and Wyatt's "That's How Much I Need You Now." But with the exception of a pause after "Clarence," the rest of the 52-minute set that forms the bulk of Middle Earth Masters takes the form of a continuous performance that sets the direction for Soft Machine incarnations to come. This may have been early days, but these unbridled and provocative performances reveal Soft Machine's greater developmental arc to be not only logical, but inevitable." -John Kelman, All About Jazz

"This is previously unreleased studio recordings recorded in mid 1969 by the 'classic' Soft Machine trio line-up of Hugh Hopper, Mike Ratledge and Robert Wyatt. These heavily manipulated/looped/etc. recordings were originally presented as the backdrop to a multi-media work entitled Spaced. After it's week-long performance, the tapes were forgotten for over 25 years until rediscovered by Mike King. These recordings feature the band at their most radical, & while they would never again use the studio in such an extreme fashion, the work done here definitely influenced later works such as Third & Hugh's 1984. With liner notes by Hugh & Bob Woolford. Out-of print on vinyl for over 25 years, this is the first CD release of the two album collaborations (Coxhill/Miller Miller/Coxhill and "The Story So Far..." "Oh Really?") between saxist Lol Coxhill and pianist Steve Miller, who first worked together in Delivery and continued their partnership for several years afterwards. These albums are quite fondly remembered by those luckily enough to own them for their unique personality and low-key approach to improvisation and composition and feature guests such as Phil Miller, Richard Sinclair, Pip Pyle, Archie Legget, Laurie Allan and Robert Wyatt. Produced, remastered and with liner notes by Michael King, the material is presented in the absolute best possible sonics. We've also included the last known interview with Steve to help shed light on his career and found some great, rare photos to include in the huge, 20 page booklet. In addition to the albums there is almost an hour of previously unreleased and unheard material. Of particular interest is 20' of material by the proto-Hatfield and the North lineup of Delivery: Steve Miller, Lol Coxhill, Phil Miller, Pip Pyle, Richard Sinclair and Roy Babbington, as well as four short, terrific solo tracks by Steve and a 25' live improvisation by Steve, Lol, Richard Sinclair and Laurie Allan from December, 1974!

Stormy Six: Macchina Maccheronica Stormy Six: Macchina Maccheronica
Code:5385
Price: $22.00
Quantity in Basket: none
Back in the days when there was such thing as the word "Progressive" in front of the word "Rock", the Stormies were the most formidable band from Italy. Macchina Macceronica is arguably the most complex and well-arranged example of what RIO meant in southern Europe at the time of the of the original organization, and the band themselves have yet to top this record. I'd go so far as to say that if you were to own only one Italian, Progressive Rock album, it should be this. Though there are strong, musical links to both Henry Cow (Georgie Born is featured here) and Picchio Dal Pozzo (along with Stormy Six, they were the main instigators of the musical collective, L'Orchestra), the band's impetus came from their county's left-wing political "folk" movement before they transformed into a unit whose compositions showed an astounding leap into the world of the complex.

Four songs in particular here are call-to-arms anthems: Pianeta, Le Lucciole, Verbale and Banca (which has the absolute best drum groove in 9/8 ever !) were some of the reasons that early Rock in Opposition raised the bar of modern, popular music at a time when the rest of the world seemed to be floundering around in the depths of commercialism. interspersed between the heavier bits are shorter , musical interludes or "vignettes", that approach surf/carnival madness, presumably there to give the listener some respite.

This Euro-import issue faithfully re-creates the 12" record in CD scale-down form (beautiful, cardboard cover, lyric booklets, photos etc.), and the sound is magnificent.

Sun Ra And His Solar Arkestra: Horizon Sun Ra And His Solar Arkestra: Horizon
Code:7632
Price: $16.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Horizon (also known as Starwatchers and Sun Ra in Egypt Vol.2) contains a big chunk of the now legendary Balloon Theatre concert (it burned down soon after their visit, as did the hotel in which the Arkestra stayed while they were in Cairo). The Balloon extract is an uncut block (tracks 1- 4 on the CD, side 1 of the LP) and features a lot of Sun Ra's all-hell-let-loose Moog soloing, as well as a great version of Discipline 2. The rest of Horizon is from the Heliopolis concert, kicking off with an instrumental version of Enlightment and Love in Outer Space (neither are on the original LP) segueing slowly into Space is the Place - followed by drum orchestra, more Ra soloing on Moog, Tiger Organ and detuned piano (bloops, hoovering, whistles, concords taking off) leading to a first lurching, then wild, Discipline 8. Two bonus tracks, for the first time restored from the original concert, follow: We'll Wait for You (with June Tyson) and The Satellites are Spinning - which ends in full-on percussion. A classic recording of a classic band in great form. Nidhamu & Dark Myth Visitation Equation complete the Egypt trilogy. Most remarkable is Nidhamu (the second release of the series, half recorded at the Balloon Theatre, the other half at Hartmut Geerken's house in Heliopolis) - a remarkable document: austere and very out there. Eeliopolis sessions aoppear on lectric keyboards and an eerie Discipline No.11 set the scene, and after some solo Moog there's a spooky miniature Discipline No.15 introducing another long Moog and keyboards solo: 35 pretty abstract minutes that just slip by. Dark Myth Visitation Equation follows (this was the first LP release, and has also been known as Sun Ra in Egypt Vol 1 and Nature's God). The first tracks are from the Cairo TV broadcast and the whole collection features more familiar groove-based pieces characteristic of the period, interspersed with Moog and electric keyboard solos. June Tyson reappears for To Nature's God and the highly eccentric Why go to the Moon?

Sun Ra: Beyond The Purple Star Zone + Oblique Parallax Sun Ra: Beyond The Purple Star Zone + Oblique Parallax
Code:7775
Price: $16.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Two related classic Saturn LP reissues on a single CD, both recorded at the Detroit Jazz Centre - in 1980 and 1981 respectively. They share an excellent sound quality and great playing - there's a classic version of Rocket No.9 and plenty of otherworldly Moog and electronic keyboards - up there with Ra's best on record. Rocket excepted, all the pieces are original to these LPs and don't appear elsewhere, though the first track of Purple Star Zone is heard again at the end, with another name (exactly as it was on the 2 LPs), so it was clearly much liked by the boss. These were 10 -14 piece bands, featuring the regulars, including June Tyson, and some visiting guests. The first LP features prominent electric guitar (not identified in the personnel list on the CD - but every listing I've seen for these LPs is different; this one should be fairly accurate in general, since the promoter helped to get the CD together). A fine release, touched with greatness. And with a good sound. Comes in the usual elaborate gatefold digipack covers for which the Artyard label is justly praised.

Sun Ra: Disco 3000 Sun Ra: Disco 3000
Code:7707
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
In the winter months of 1977-1978, philosopher, pianist and bandleader Sun Ra was in Italy. The Italian tour resulted in releases on Sun Ra's own Saturn label, all of which have long been out of print and all but impossible to find. With the re-release of DISCO 3000 one of the most celebrated of these elusive Saturn gems is once more available. This release, and it's companion MEDIA DREAMS, capture a side of Sun Ra's work - small ensemble, close form, original composition, rather minimal - that is otherwise under-represented. Depending heavily on Ra's electric and electronic keyboards (including the mysterious Crumar Mainman - of which even the company has no record) and, more unusually, on his intelligent use of sequencers and rhythm machines, this is an important window on the evolution of Ra's musical thinking, rendered even more transparent by the economy of its means; a quartet comprising only saxophonist John Gilmore, trumpeter Michael Ray and drummer Luqman Ali.

Sun Ra: On Jupiter Sun Ra: On Jupiter
Code:7600
Price: $15.95

"Righteous Ra from the end of the 70s -- one of the most soulful albums ever by the Sun Ra Arkestra, and a lost treasure that's got some nice funky moments! The vibe here is very much in the Lanquidity/Disco 3000 mode -- an extrapolation of styles best known from the Space Is The Place era, tightened up into more of a groove at some points, but also relaxed and more reflective at others. Our favorite track on the set is "UFO", a snapping bit of funk that comes as a real surprise from Sun Ra -- and a tune that's got some nicely noisy guitar jamming alongside straighter electric rhythms -- all topped off by vocals from the group and some really strong horn work! The tune's a great party funk number that shows the Arkestra at its most joyous -- and other tracks include "On Jupiter", which has a great blend of light vocals, spacey moog, and snakey sax -- plus the side-long "Seductive Fantasy", a laidback number that unfolds with a really gentle grace." - Dusty Groove

Sun Ra: Sleeping Beauty Sun Ra: Sleeping Beauty
Code:7601
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
One of the most soulful Sun Ra albums ever -- very much on the Lanquidity tip, and done with a great mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation! The vibe here is really mellow, spiritual, and warm -- and the album actually feels a lot more like a session recorded for the Strata East label than it does for Saturn! Keyboards pervade the session -- electric piano and organ drifting around in moody, laidback lines -- augmented by occasional vibes, bits of guitar, and some wonderfully well-blown sax solo work by Marshall Allen and John Gilmore! The title track "Sleeping Beauty" runs for all of side two of the album -- and it's an amazing little number that mixes instrumental passages with some great mellow Roy Ayers-styled vocals. "Door Of The Cosmos" is a bit of a groover, and even gets a bit funky at times -- and the album also features the laidback spacey number "Springtime". - Dusty Groove

Sun Ra: The Antique Blacks Sun Ra: The Antique Blacks
Code:7726
Price: $16.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Another much sought after and long unavailable title recorded in 1974 with a smallish ensemble consisting (probably) of stalwarts Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, Danny David, James Jacson, Akh Tal Ebah, Clifford Jarvis, Artakatune, and a new electric guitarist, Sly, and released on Saturn in the same year. This sounds like a studio recording and careful thought out - most of the compositions appear only on this record (apart from versions of Nature's God and Space is the Place), and include a chain of very interesting accompanied /interpolated) spoken texts: There is a Change in the Air, The Antique Blacks, The ridiculous "I" and the Cosmos "Me" as well as a very long and scary coda to Space is the Place. Ra plays Rocksichord and Moog throughout (solo on track 7 and at the end of track 8). Theatrical and political; a fascinating release.

The Blitzoids: Stealing From Helpless Children + Look Up (Dbl. Cd) The Blitzoids: Stealing From Helpless Children + Look Up (Dbl. Cd)
Code:6779
Price: $25.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Way back in 80's, before the term "Alternative" was hijacked to correspond with Seattle "Grunge", the genre was held in high-esteem for its "D.I.Y. / Low-Fi" ethic. The Blitzoids - along with The Residents, R. Stevie Moore and Eugene Chadbourne - epitomized this school of thought in the USA. From the headquarters of their native Chicago, Illinois compound (ie. The De Chiara brothers' record store, which was infamous for its somewhat crude but workable 8 Track recording studio conditions), The Blitzoids created songs that went well beyond normally written forms. Aside from the band's basic "rock" instrumentation, they exploited Musique' Concrete, found sounds and strange instrumentation to define their sonic palette. Different sections of music were seamlessly butted-up against one another to tell musical stories in sharp and clear detail, often giving way to rich, open passages of sound, only to be quickly countered by kitschy, pop-influenced stabs of humor. In the long run, the band's music was at once witty, whacky, artfully strange and wonderfully unique.

One of the outstanding bands of the eighties who came and went with hardly anyone noticing and just 2 EP's and a single released on their own label. In 1982, ReR compiled an LP from the debris of the surviving tapes and that was that for 20 years. Now more or less everything that can be found has been collected together on these 3 CDs. The first two assemble the handful of releases issued by the band plus our own 1982 best-of LP, the 'Ici La Bas' album (the HS under other names), 'Venceremos' - a cassette release with some tracks by the group and various individual members, and various fragments - preliminary backing tracks and so on. The third CD features the work of the later group, mainly Bruno and Suzy. There is a 30pp booklet with some useful recovered photos, Bruno's version of the band history and notes on the tracks. Those of you for whom this is a must know who you are. You will need this release. Those who want to test the water first, I suggest you start with our single CD reissue of the ReR 1982 release.

After their 1990 Cub-E tour, The Residents needed to recharge their creative batteries, and the Freak Show project was born. Freak Show created a marvelous cast of quirky freaks, each with their own all-too human failings & haunting theme songs worming their way into the listener's brain. Feeling their ideas had more life, The Residents met with comic artists Brian Bolland (visual creator of Judge Dread and the 'Dark Knight' Batman) & Edwin 'Savage Pencil' Pouncey and crafted the idea of a Freak Show graphic novel, which was released by Dark Horse comics a year later. The Freak Show project also spawned a CD-ROM in 1994, and a theatrical stage show complete with orchestra a few years later. Originally released in 1991 with a bonus CD-ROM, Mute's Freak Show reissue contains a special 32-page book in hardbook packaging. The Work: Rubber Cage The Work: Rubber Cage
Code:6777
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
These are powerful recordings of the band's most densely composed material., musically akin to another of their classics, "Slow Crimes", but honed into even more mature fashion. (The band had broken up after a tour of Japan in 1982, and reformed for this record 7 years later. In the interim, each of the musicians' talents and compositional abilities had grown by leaps and bounds). This album was a new beginning for The Work, and set them off in a slightly different direction than they had previously employed: Much of the energy of this music came from the sheer "tenseness" of the compositions; they didn't need to bludgeon the ears to get the point across. Besides collecting what could arguably be their most finely crafted songs, this disk best displays the group's unusual sense of individual soloing: The singularly-plucked cello during "Dangerfish", and the free-form piano of "Jay", both seem to be the intrinsic opposite of the musical settings they embellish. Capturing such disparate approaches sets up a dichotomy of styling throughout this exceedingly intense album, offering startling (and usually brutal) results.

The Work: Slow Crimes The Work: Slow Crimes
Code:6778
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Originally issued on vinyl in 1982, this music, along with that of compatriots This Heat and Unrest Work & Play, set the stage for a unique type of new British Invasion; one that seemed to absorb the complexity and slickness of Progressive Rock, whilst throwing its aesthetics to the dogs, in lieu of the energy and power of early Punk. THE WORK were amongst the first few to purposefully break their own mold in an attempt to break new ground, concomitantly creating music that seems more comfortable resting on a bed of nails than precious laurels. The drums are primal, and hold the entire band together in a polyrhythmic way that was, at the time, unheard-of in Punk music. The vocals are offered unapologetically, sometimes in semi-screams of anguish and insolence. The guitars & bass chug along, daring the listener to tap their foot in time to regain one's bearings. Over it all is the collective penchant to add experimental noise, to further a state of shock. The group worked tirelessly within these guidelines on the road for 2 years before disbanding, only to reform some seven years later, releasing two additional and equally excellent albums.

"Thinking Plague grew out of basement recording experiments by Mike Johnson & Bob Drake in the early 80's. They released their 1st lp, ...a thinking plague in 1984 on their own label in a hand-painted edition of 500. They then disbanded the original version of the band & formed a new version, featuring Susanne Lewis & others. This band released Moonsongs in 1986, which Option called 'stunning' upon its release. Newly remastered by Bob Drake, with astonishingly improved sound, this marks the 1st time that these vinyl rarities have been available in over a decade. You can hear the development of the band from their roots grow into the sound that is uniquely theirs". -Cuneiform

This recording combines the art of music, the engineering of electronics, and the inspiration of biology. In it, David Tudor orchestrates electronic sound in ways analogous to our biological bodies' orchestration of consciousness. The performance originates from a neural-network synthesizer conceived and built especially for Tudor. He surrounds this synthesizer with his own unique collection of electronic devices, and in the recording on this CD made for headphone playback; he uses a new binaural technique for translating sound into out-of-head localizations in which sound seems to originate from specific, changing points within a space around the listener.

"Fueled by the avant-garde sonic ammo of keyboardist/composer Joe Byrd and the haunting vocals of Dorothy Moskowitz, the United States Of America found a way to permanently hardwire space-age electronic music to the heart of rock and roll on their highly desirable, self-titled 1968 debut. Byrd's kaleidoscopic musical excursions and Gordon Marron's searing violin orbit around the icy vocals of Moskowitz, who -- with a passing resemblance to early Jefferson Airplane belter Signe Anderson -- remains the group's center, steady as a rock. This heady mind-trip is reissued with the participation of both Byrd and Moskowitz, sports 10 amazing bonus cuts, comprehensively fascinating liner notes by Byrd, himself, and -- newly mastered from the original analog source tapes -- has never sounded better." -Forced Exposure

"A founding member of the original 'Rock In Opposition' [R.I.O.] movement, and considered to be one of the greatest avant-garde bands of the 70's & 80's Belgium's Univers Zero were originally founded in 1974. Originally released as a limited edition, Japanese-only 12'' EP, Crawling Wind has long been the unavailable crown jewel of the band's oeuvre. Now available for the first time on CD, it has been remastered and expanded, with the addition of rare and never before released studio and live material, to a full length album. It additionally includes a short history of the group written by noted writer Dean Suzuki, a long time fan of the band. Univers Zero's distinctive sound is a combination of their unique instrumentation (piano and keyboards, violin, clarinets, oboe/bassoon, bass, and drums) blended with Gothic imagery and an intensely strong, classically influenced writing style. In the hands of some of the best musicians of Europe, these factors lead to a group on the cutting edge of creating a new, vital and different approach to rock music". -Cuneiform

"Implosion features Univers Zero's trademark chamber rock style - a style that they are one of the originators of - subtly modernized, infused with greater classicism and given a sharper, more electric and electronic edge. Besides leader/composer Daniel Denis (drums, percussion, keyboard, samplers, accordion, guitar), musicians on Implosion include Michel Berckmans (oboe, English horn, bassoon), Serge Bertocchi (saxes & tubax), Aurelia Boven (cello), Ariane De Bievre (flute, piccolo), Dirk Descheemaeker (bass clarinet, clarinet), Bart Maris (trumpet, flugelhorn), Eric Plantain (electric bass), Christophe Pons (acoustic guitar), Bart Quartier (marimba, glockenspiel), and Igor Semenoff (violin). Implosion shows that, three decades after it was first formed, Univers Zero continues to evolve, expanding and experimenting with the boundaries of New Music, and, to quote Expose, ceaselessly 'proving themselves to be one of the best and most important groups on the planet'". -Cuneiform

Univers Zero: Live Univers Zero: Live

"'Since the late '70s, Univers Zero composer and drummer Daniel Denis has been pursuing his vision of a chamber music that borrows the energy and production of rock, especially working with stereo extremes, but with a classical ambiance.'-John Diliberto/Pulse! Univers Zero occupy a special place in the new music pantheon. They practically invented the 'chamber-rock' style and their albums are classics of their kind, with an instantly recognizable sound. Group leader Daniel Denis had long insisted that he wasn't interested in having a performing band, so it was a thrill and a shock when he put together a stable band version of UZ for the 00's. This edition of the band is the most perfectly realized version of Univers Zero for live performance, which is something that Daniel obviously agrees with, as he had resisted a live album until now. Consisting of six tremendous players: Daniel Denis-drums, Michael Berckmans-bassoon, English horn and oboe, Martin Lauwers-violin, Peter Van Den Berghe-piano and keyboards, Kurt Bud-clarinet and saxophone and Eric Plantain-bass, the band has finally managed to fufil Daniel's vision of marrying a rock band with the majesty and power of classical instrumentation. This is an utterly fantastic sounding recording which includes some significant re-arrangements of a number of great works, which bring out new aspects of these pieces! 'I must say the live UZ is freakin' great. Congrats. For me, it's their best album since Ceux. Truly an excellent recording too.' -Dave Kerman. Founding members of the Rock In Opposition movement, Univers Zero have continued to change and grow and develop over their entire career, while still keeping a ensemble sound and spirit that is easily recognizable. Relaps presents something that Univers Zero's fans have been hoping for for decades; a peek into the recorded archives of one of the greatest avant-rock ensembles since mid 1970s! This CD documents the final 1980s line-ups of Univers Zéro before the band's long sabbatical from recording and touring. The live sound is excellent throughout and the CD features a 16 page booklet with a informative history of the band during this time period as well as rare, never-seen photos. The line-ups featured on Relaps are the quintet who recorded UZED and the septet who recorded Heatwave. The material is drawn from those two albums, with the live setting providing some different arrangements and even greater fire to the pieces; I found the pieces taken from Heatwave to be particularly inspiring and outrageous. There is also a short, otherwise unheard composition included here. While UZ continue to play truely awesome gigs and develop the material that will be found on their next studio album, Relaps provides a chance for the listener to catch up with some never-released and exciting recordings from a truly classic band! --Cuneiform

"Univers Zero's New Music fusion of rock and classical music has been discussed by Focus magazine: 'while ensembles like the Kronos and Brodsky quartets have filtered into the rock world by way of guest appearances or loosely adapting rock music, Univers Zero have been single-handedly bridging the two disparate worlds by integrating a frontline rhythm section into their dark scores. And what a powerhouse pulse machine it is...' This is UZ's 2nd release since reforming in the late 1990's, and leader/composer/drummer/keyboardist Daniel Denis builds upon the rich legacy of Univers Zero's work, using both the acoustic colorations of their earliest releases (bassoon, oboe, harmoniums) as well as the interest in electronic keyboards and synthesis that marked their later releases. While working with this legacy, Denis is not afraid to experiment, and the music on Rhythmix includes a total of 10 musicians, including some performing on instruments like flute, trumpet, acoustic guitar, marimba and accordion, all of which are instruments that are not normally thought of in the context of Univers Zero, in addition to the violin, bassoon/oboe, piano/harmonium, bass, drums, etc. that we all know would be there!" -Cuneiform

Code:6052
Price: $13.95
Quantity in Basket: none
"Univers Zero play fascinating, modern, chamber music-influenced rock. Simultaneously gothic & futuristic, they are somewhat like the very best of Magma or Crimson, but infinitely darker, with helpings of Eastern European folk melodies added. This band and these discs are completely deserving of the mystique & legendary status that have grown up around them. Incomparable! Their first, this is a unique disc of dark, mostly acoustic chamber rock. '...a must for lovers of adventurous music' -Keyboard. 'A remarkably subtle weaving of rock, classical, & avant garde tactics...' -Alternative Press. 'If Stravinsky had a rock band, it would sound like this. Blazing, white hot, medieval' -Advocate Newspapers. 'The fall of Rome? The parting of the Red Sea? What else can compare with the monumental occurence of a new slab of Univers Zero?' -Mike Ezzo/Expose #18. 'Univers Zero's vision (is) pretty much unique & for those touched by it, nothing else will quite do...a sound that really couldn't be any other band in the world.' -The Rough Guide To Rock. 'Daring & delightful...their music has mystery and power...' -Focus". -Cuneiform

Ur Kaos: Av Sprucket ut ar ett Inutti
Code:4474
Price: $17.95
Quantity in Basket: none
It's been a long time since the last. Sombre, minimal, nicely recorded, this is a kind of almost-rock that is insistent but soft, a little distant. Disappearing songs, a fragment of twisted forest. Many fine moments. An acquired taste, but very articulated and finished music.

Ur Kaos: Ur Kaos Ur Kaos: Ur Kaos
Code:7556
Price: $9.00
Quantity in Basket: none
Reissue of the fine 1987 release by Swedish trio Ur Kaos, featuring Lach'n Jonsson (who will be well known to old Recommended hands - indeed, included here as a bonus track is one of the pieces he did for the ReR Quarterly many years ago). An inventive, strong - but sombre - collection of instrumental-heavy songs that have internalised Magma, This Heat, Art Bears and other influences, while retaining their own character and mood. Bands used to be like this. Instrumentation is bass, drums, guitar, keyboards and singing. Sensibly divided by a silent track into the original A and B sides so as to retain the listening-programme of the LP, this is a memento of a time when bands had musical personalities, and when instrumental playing was nuanced and expressive. Music with character.

Ussachevksy, Vladimir: Film Music Ussachevksy, Vladimir: Film Music
Code:6723
Price: $15.95
Quantity in Basket: none
1990 CD release of these scores from the 1960s. "One of the founders, with Babbitt, Luening and Sessions, of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Centre in 1959, Ussachevsky has maintained a flexible attitude toward sound sources, and employs recordings of live sounds, analog studio, and computer generated material. In this he always differed from the originally quite restrictive approaches of the German pure electronic and French musique concréte schools. Though prepared for films, a medium that usually imposes considerable restrictions on a composer, both these scores were innovative and have considerable power. The 'Suite from No Exit' (1962) comes from the film of Sartre's Huis Clos directed by Orson Welles, while 'Line of Apogee' (1967) is the soundtrack of Lloyd Williams' film of the same name. Its great musical interest notwithstanding, the former is the usual kind of film score in that it is a background for spoken dialogue, whereas in 'Line of Apogee' there are few spoken words and Ussachevsky's music comments more directly on Williams' extraordinary flow of strange, sometimes dreamlike visual images. In both pieces this composer's favorite musical form, that of variations on several alternating themes, is in use, and the themes do not have traditional timbral or pitch characteristics. Consider for example his use of the human voice in 'No Exit', going from the electronically modified screams of the opening scene to the voices of distant children, etc., and on to the end, where the sound of men laughing is abruptly silenced by rifle fire." - Max Harrison, The Wire

When Gareth Williams died on Christmas Eve 2001 at the age of 48, the world lost a huge personality and a unique creative talent, yet little is known of his work outside of the legendary group This Heat. With this first official release on Compact Disc of Williams's solo and collaborative works from 1985, Life and Living Records take the first steps to correcting this imbalance. "Flaming Tunes" was recorded by Gareth Williams and Mary Currie with input from a variety of contributors including fellow This Heat member Charles Bullen, long term collaborators Martin Harrison and Rick Wilson, Mick Hobbs and others.

Bill Gilonis / Tim Hodgkinson / Amos - Chris Cutler
By 1982 drummer Rick Wilson had left The Work to study Katakali in India, and bassist Mick Hobbs followed shortly afterwards over disagreements about what the group should be playing. The remainder of the band then asked Amos (bass) and Chris Cutler (drums) to join them for a tour of Japan that had already been scheduled before the breakup. Together with sound engineer Chris Gray, the group flew there in June to play three concerts in Tokyo and one in Osaka. The recording that became "Live in Japan" was taken at the Osaka concert, the only one on the tour that was recorded. A Japan-only release followed (on Recommended Records Japan), which has been out of print for over 20 years and is virtually impossible to find anywhere. This disc re-issues the concert for the first time, adding the extremely rare, red flexi-disc, live version of the classic, "I Hate America", as a bonus track.

Xenakis: Percussion Works Xenakis: Percussion Works
Code:6879
Price: $48.95
Quantity in Basket: none
Performed by the percussion ensemble red fish blue fish, directed by Steven Schick. "The first complete set of Xenakis' percussion ensemble, percussion duos, and solo percussion works. As Steven Schick states in his comprehensive essay accompanying this set, Xenakis was the 'progenitor of modern percussion music.' Of course, Iannis Xenakis did not create percussion music, his first major contribution to the percussion repertory came more than three decades after the American percussion revolution of Edgard Varèse, John Cage and Henry Cowell. But as Jorge Luis Borges said of Kafka, he was so important that he influenced even those who came before him. Indeed, our early 21st century ear for percussion music has been so tuned by the music of Xenakis that we cannot fail to understand the first cacophonous noise constructions of Varèse's 'Ionisation' (1931) and Cage's 'First Construction' (1939) through the retro-lens of the raw and terrifying noises in Xenakis' percussion works. 24-bit audiophile recordings. Available as a 3CD set or specially priced single DVD-A release (forthcoming)." -Forced Exposure
